Between the two gifted minds of J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling, we have a whole host of magical creatures. Imagine for a moment that these creatures were to meet, who would get the best of who, and why?

Personally, I have fun imagining the Wargs vs. Blast-Ended Skrewts. The Wargs have intelligence and the ability to work together on their side, while the Skrewts' sheer size and protective armour would be formidable. I think I'd have to put my money on the Skrewts.

What match-ups do you think would be interesting? Who do you think would come out bested? Some other possibilities would be Acromantula's and Mirkwood spiders...trolls of HP vs. goblins of Hobbit...Dobby and Gollum...use your imagination and feel free to disagree!

Ooh interesting question (and one which I should probably go away and think about but I'm too impatient lol.gif )

So if I was to choose match-ups, I'd go like for like.
So, I'd pair the Wargs against HPs werewolfs, although I guess I'd have to specify which werewolfs because there's Lupin on the one hand who is gentle and caring while Fenrir is viscious and malicious. Although I guess in transformed state, Lupin is as nasty as the next guy so, maybe Wargs and Werewolfs would make a good match-up. Although the Wargs seem more calculating, the werewolfs have brute strength and just go for it. While the Wargs are plotting their traps the werewolfs would just sneak up on them and shred them wolf.gif

The Acromantulas vs the Mirkwood spiders would be interesting because (aside from Aragog and his respect for Hagrid) they are both sentient, calculating and eat people. I think the Mirkwood spiders might be slightly more nasty but it would be a close call, and I get the impression that Aragog's children would be way bigger in size and in number than the Mirkwood spiders, giving them the upper hand.

Personally (because I'm going with like for like) I wouldnt pair Dobby with Gollum although in my opinion, if they were in a fight I'd put all my money on Dobby. Although he's gentle and kind, in a fight he does what needs to be done. He has superior magic and intellect to that of Gollum who's gone pretty much insane under the Ring's influence.

HP Goblins vs Middle Earth Goblins would be interesting. Both are shrewd, calculating, cunning and smart. You dont mess with a Goblin. The Middle Earth Goblins appear nastier but we see them in a different light than in HP, where they have adapted to living and working among humans. Middle Earth Goblins eat ponies and dwarfs. Face to face I fear the Middle Earth Goblins would win because they are accustomed to fighting, to battles and to fending for themselfs. HP Goblins did and do fight but it's less a part of their daily life now.

There are probably some real cool match-ups that I've totally overlooked here. I'll go away and think about it rolleyes.gif

Beorn vs. Fenrir Greyback might be a fun battle.

Good suggestion! Who do you think would win? I hate to always pick the 'good guys' but I think Beorn would make wolfmeat of Greyback. My opinion is that Beorn can be just as ruthless as Fenrir, the difference between them is that Beorn recognizes when ruthless is necessary, where Greyback takes pleasure in it.

Oh, that is a good distinction, Pyxis. I think we see the same characteristic in other literary characters. Dumbledore, for instance, is capable of incredible ferocity, but always knows when it is appropriate and when it is not. He can be cold and rational or he can move with speed and power. He knows what is needed at what occasion.

Beorn also is not out of control.

We also must be able to recognize when an enemy can be transformed or converted, and when an enemy would rather die than cease being that enemy--not an easy distinction. And even when we know we are faced with the latter, we must know when all out frontal assault is best and when parrying and feinting are best.

So, I agree--Frenrir would be strung up as jerky strips to dry in the sun. Pure hatred and viciousness are not enough. The bear has strength, fortitude, and single minded determination on his side. The wolf has many great qualities, but Fenrir does not know the true qualities of the wolf. His viciousness is not a result of his wolf nature, but of his human nature.

I think a match-up of the two Dark Lords would be interesting. Voldemort is powerful but he deludes himself how powerful a Dark Lord he is. Putting him against the other Dark Lord would put him in his place. Sauron is more strong magically and really is a Dark Lord. Voldemort just like to think he is great.
