We said goodbye to some new characters and many old friends and loved ones in Deathly Hallows and even some not-so-loved ones:

Bathilda Bagshot
Charity Burbage
Vincent Crabbe
Colin Creevey
Dirk Cresswell
Dobby
Antonin Dolohov
Gornuk
Gregorovitch
Gellert Grindelwald
Hedwig
Bellatrix Lestrange
Remus Lupin
Moody
Nagini
Peter Pettigrew
Severus Snape
Nymphadora Tonks
Ted Tonks
Fred Weasley
Voldemort

Its an alphabetical list to avoid favouritism (I'll leave you to decide who fits in which category note.gif ).

Who's death surprised or shocked you the most or the least? How did you feel as you read the deaths in the book? JKR told us there would be a bloodbath - did you expect this many deaths or did you think there would be more?

Let us know how you feel about those who died cry.gif

To be honest, I didn't think there would be that many. I don't even have enough room in my sig to put all the deaths of people I cared about.
When JK wrote about Lupin & Tonks lined up amongst all the other bodies I burst into tears straight away. Lupin is my 2nd favorite character and for JK to kill him off and not even make a big deal about it annoyed me and upset me a lot.
Dobby and Hedwigs death really shocked me. Especially Hedwig, because.. who ever thought Harry's owl would die? And so early on in the book! Mad-Eye's death shocked me because, like Dumbledore, he was a great wizard and I never would have thought they'd have died.
I liked Bellatrix as a character, and liked her even more after Helena Bonham-Carter's wonderful portrayal. But I was so happy for Molly when she killed her, but it was a shock nevertheless that Molly would have been the one to kill her.
Voldemort, I wasn't suprised with. It was either him or Harry, and I would have actually died if Rowling had killed Harry.

And with Snape. Damn Snape. I got so confused as to weather he was good or bad. But I liked him anyway (again, wonderful portrayal by Alan Rickman in my opinion) but I still willed him to be good, you know? So when he died I was pretty shocked. Probably the most shocked out of all the deaths in DH, and with the convasation with Voldemort beforehand. I'm just reading the page where he dies now. When it says "A terrible rasping, gurgling noise issued from Snape's throat" just made me well up, because I could totally picture it and it's so sad.
& Then Harry got Snapes memory... "'Look... at... me' he whispered. The green eyes found the black, but after a second something in the depths of the dark pair seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more." That last paragraph is totally unbearable for me. Then the next chapter The Prince's Tale [33] was the worst. It just showed that Snape really was good, and therefore made me realise he was so brave and didn't deserve to die. Thats the worst.

I could talk about all the deaths, but those hit me hardest/ shocked me the most.

I was shocked when Dobby, Hedwig, and Fred Weasley died. ohmy.gif The deaths I cared the least about was Bella and LV, but I did not think that Molly would be the one to kill Bella. I was not suprised at all of the deaths in the book I mean she did say there would be a bloodbath.

*takes a deep breath*
After DH I alternated rereading the Scholastic version and the UK version, and then one day I found I just couldnt pick up DH anymore. I know it was war, and I know a lot of people die in wartime. But, somehow it's beyond depressing, it's like JKR tried to kill everyone that was ever close to Harry. That's not totally true because there are many that survived, like Ron, Hagrid, Hermione ...
But, I felt it was *too much* in the end. To even kill Dobby, and Hedwig, Harry's first friend and companion? I think I cried through the entire book, but the worst was Snape (although Dobby was a pretty close second) because I've always cared about Snape & trusted him & it was just so sad, and unfair.
For Lupin to die, it was just wrong, too. Like all he's been through, to just become this wretch and then get killed?
I think there'll be a generation of permanently depressed readers because of DH sad.gif
There are just so many deaths that it's emotion overload.

To my dear brother Gred-

Life hasn't been the same since your death. The day you died, I lost my brother, business partner, and best friend. It took a while for mum to get over your death, but she is doing loads better now. The joke shop is still going strong and a lot of people have come out and helped, especially in those days/weeks/months just after your death. It wasn't easy, a lot of people died, but we were all there for each other. Some people lost everyone, we were one of the lucky families.

Here is a brief update on the family: Ron married Hermione (finally) and had two children Hugo and Rose; Ginny married Harry (again, finally) and had James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna; Bill and Fleur have three children Victoire, Dominique and Louis, Percy married Audrey and they have Molly and Lucy. Mum just loves little Molly to pieces. I've married Angelina, and we have two wonderful children Fred and Roxanne. I see a lot of you in little Fred, he has a big name to live up to, but he seems up for the challenge so far.

I keep your memories alive by telling your nieces and nephews stories about you and us. I think that their favorite story is when we let the swamp loose in Hogwarts and then flew away on our brooms.

I miss you brother, I miss your humor, your jokes, our inventing together, and most of all just seeing you everyday. There is a hole in the family, (and my ear), but know that we are all well and your memory lives on. I have a toilet seat here in your memory.

Your brother-
Forge

I was still crying over Fred when Lupin and Tonks were just- there, dead. It shocked me, because not only was I distracted by Fred, but they are two of my favorite characters and I didn't expect Tonks to go. I was steeling myself for Lupin, but not Tonks. Still, the way they were just there added to the atmosphere of horror and Harry's feelings at the time. And, of course, the Harry/Teddy parallel.
