In HBP, when Narcissia is getting ready to tell Snape the reason for her visit, he does some sort of spell to get Wormtail away from the door, and then it says
QUOTE "My apologies," said Snape. "He has lately taken to listening at doors, I don't know what he means by it... Who else would be there talking to Snape, that wormtail would be listening at the doors. My first thought is DD, but do you think that was his only visitor? From the way it's worded, it could have been more than once. Depending on who it was, what would the relevence of their visit be? My first inclination is that DD came to discuss their "plan" for the latter part of the school year, but I'm sure it could have been someone else instead or also. Any thoughts? -------------------- "...Well, it appears that Rufus found a way to corner you at last."
"He accused me of being 'Dumbledore's man through and through.'" "How very rude of him." "I told him I was." |

I think DD is very likely - I'm sure DD has visited Snape at Spinner's End to discuss the DADA post or general Order/spy business(I can't imagine DD offering the Potions Master's job to Slughorn without first checking that Snape would still be willing to be DADA teacher - we know Snape always applies for the post, but he always gets turned down - it would be just DD's luck if Snape turned round and said, 'Actually, I don't want the rotten DADA teacher's job now!' Of course, this could have happened at Hogwarts rather than Spinner's End). It's possible Dumbledore could have gone straight to Spinner's End after he hurt himself opening the cursed Horcrux ring. Then there's the Order. Snape can probably communicate with them via the floo grate - Wormtail could hear him talking to them through the door. We know it isn't Lucius or most of the old DE's because they're all in Azkaban. -------------------- "My idea of good company, Mr Elliott, is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company."

We know it isn't Lucius or most of the old DE's because they're all in Azkaban. Well, I agree it would be for the DADA post, but not for the hand. DD definately says that he went back to Hogwarts, where Snape healed his hand or stopped it from spreading the the rest of the body. "Yes indeed," said Dumbledore, and he raised his blackened burned-looking hand. "The ring, Harry. Marvolo's ring. And a terrible fure there was upon it too. Had it not been - forgive me the lack of seemly modesty - for my own prodigious skill, and for Professor Snape's timely action when I returned to Hogwarts, desperately injured, I might not have lived to tell the tale. However, a withered hand does not seem an unreasonable exchange for a seventh of Voldemort's soul. The ring is no longer a Horcrux." - HBP, Horcruxes. I think DD is the best guess. Snape's not really the social type and LV isn't going to go see anyone except to kill them. Perhaps Wormtail is partly there to spy for LV as to watching Snape's loyalty? Assorted members of the Order and other DEs may have called on Snape.

how does Snape even realize that wormtail is there (listening in on the conversation)? if he has that power to know when wormtail is trying to listen in...wouldn't snape have the ability to know when Harry is around under the cloak?

QUOTE(ryplo2 @ Oct 29 2006, 01:23 PM) how does Snape even realize that wormtail is there (listening in on the conversation)? if he has that power to know when wormtail is trying to listen in...wouldn't snape have the ability to know when Harry is around under the cloak? I think that it's more like Snape is aware of Wormtails unworthiness and his desire to be more respected. Don't forget that no one (well almost) trusts Snape, therefore it would be logical that Snape would have no trust for them either. Wormtail, is the slimiest so far, so I'm not surprised that Snape is more "aware" that Wormtail had snuck back down to listen at the door. Another point is that there maybe a charm Snape has especially set up for detenting nosy ears. I don't that is anything to do with Snape's magical powers or something like that. -------------------- Behind every great man stands an amazing woman. |

QUOTE(ryplo2 @ Oct 29 2006, 11:23 PM) wouldn't snape have the ability to know when Harry is around under the cloak? I think he does, but he never quite pinpointed where. Snape always seemed to suspect something when Harry was where he shouldn't have been. But if he uses Legilimency or something or Wormtail and picks up that he's overhearing him (nervousness, deceit, memories of the last words said?) then it would be pretty obvious that Peter is standing right outside the door. But the less sensible answer is that Peter must really whiff by now. So maybe you don't even need a nose Snape's size to know when the pongrodent is nearby. The rule for Legilimency is eye contact. if there is no eye contact, they cannot perform legilimency. There is only one exception to this rule and that is between LV and Harry, they are connected through the scar, through the curse that failed.
