Ah, the Hogwarts teachers! When first we meet them, we see them through Harry's eleven-year-old eyes, and we are meant to be scared by Snape, intimidated by McGonagall, awed and amused by Dumbledore, etc.

In your opinion, which teacher in the films has the look perfected? Snape? McGonagall? Richard Harris as Dumbledore or Michael Gambon as Dumbledore? Old Filius or Young Filius? When you first saw the film version of the teachers, were their looks close to the way you'd pictured them in your imagination?

When you first saw Lockhart, did he look like the man who would like to market his own range of hair care potions?

Magical Me

Did Snape's appearance frighten you?

"Bewitching the mind..."

Did you immediately trust Dumbledore?

"Alas! Earwax!"

Is McGonagall formidable?
"Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned."

Hagrid becomes a teacher in Harry's third year!
"Ah, well, people can be stupid abou' their pets."

Did Flitwick look anything like you'd imagined?
Former Dueling Champion

How about Madam Hooch? When you first saw her, did you want to get your broom out of the cupboard, place it on the floor and command, "UP"?!?
I expect a nice clean match!

Remus John Lupin. Beloved by so many! Does film Lupin come close to book Lupin? Can any movie representation of Lupin ever match the Lupin of your imagination?
"Here," he said to Harry, handing him a particularly large piece [of chocolate]. "Eat it. It'll help."
(Every woman's dream--a man who understands the power of chocolate!)

As always, the Galleries threads are for discussing appearance (hence the pictures)!

I'm going through each one because this is another hard poll!!

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (PS/SS and CoS) - Wonderful look for a wizard, but too old. Robes beautiful but too cumbersome for a wizard like DD. I want to see some energy in DD, and as I have said quite a lot in the Lounge, I get that from Michael Gambon's DD.

Filius Flitwick (PS/SS and CoS) - I loved this look but it isn't canon, even Jo has said she was shocked by the appearance of Warwick Davis as Flitwick in the first two movies. Having said that, the newer version creeps me out so no to this one too!!

Rubeus Hagrid - The look is perfect, just perfect! From the height to the bushy beard to the clothes. I love this look they gave Robbie Coltrane.

Madam Hooch - This one is hard because I can't remember what is said in canon. Is she supposed to have spiky hair and yellow eyes? I must admit though I did love her boots!

Gilderoy Lockhart - Wonderful. The colourful robes, the wavy blond hair and that smile! I just love how Kenneth Brannagh looked and I really hope we see him again in the OotP film.

Remus Lupin - Nope! Sorry, I love him very much and I love the portrayal that David Thewis gives, but he does not look like my Lupin.

Minerva McGonagall - Very good. I love her robes, Maggie Smith is the perfect age for Minerva and I cannot fault it.

Quirenius Quirrell - Another one that was spot on!

Severus Snape - Too good looking tongue.gif !

Sybill/Sibyll Trelawny - No, No, No! I love Emma Thompson, but this look was all wrong. Sybil isn't a hippy. She was thin and spindly and looked like a giant stick insect. This is the worse look for me out of all of the teachers.

ponder.gif I will vote for Hagrid...no, McGonagall............changed my mind again, it has to be Lockhart!

HELP!!!

Without a doubt Kenneth Brannagh's Gilderoy Lockhart! He fit exactly to 'my' Gilderoy - none of the other actors or actresses have come near. Probably second though would be Maggie Smith as McGonagall - she has the stern yet caring personality exactly right.

When I saw Hagrid for the first time I was so excited because he looked just like I thought he would. He even talks the way I thought he would.

I haven't voted yet because I can't decide. Harris's Dumbledore, Hagrid, McGonagall, and Lockhart are all soooo perfect... ponder.gif I going to have to think this one over a little more.....

Albus Dumbledore: I loved his look in PS and CoS he was exactly the way I imagined him to be. He acts and looks the part. clap.gif

Minera McGonagall: Just the same as Dumbledore. Looks and acts the part.

Severus Snape: Brilliant! Evil and cruel as in the books.

Rubeus Hagrid: Perfect look but I think they have made him acted a bit more adult like in the films, there's less tears and he's more wiser. I think I prefare him that way.

Filius Flitwick: I liked his look in the first 2 films with the white beard and balding head, it made him look old like he should be becasue most of the teachers seem to me to be between the ages of 70 and 100 at least.
I really didn't liked the look of Flitwick in GoF.

Prof. Sprout: I like the look of Professor Sprout, just like a gardener.

Madam Hooch: I think they got Madam Hooch's look right too but I think we need to see more of her in the next few films.

I like the fact that most of the teachers first names and last names have the same initials. lol.gif

Impossible to vote.

Richard Harris as DD definately has the look, he is DD, he was exactly how & what I had imagined for DD, he even has the quiet & soft voice that inspires confidence & respect but leaves no doubt about his total control over the situation.

Robbie Coltraine is also awesome as Hagrid, he talks like Hagrid, he behaves like Hagrid.

Snape see Snape thread lol. Perfect. AR brings everything of Snapes persona & characteristics & mannerisms.

Flitwick was great in SS & CoS, I know that JKR said she didnt like the look, but turning him into a mini Poirot for PoA & GoF was just plain weird. I didnt even know that it was Flitwick in PoA for the longest time.

McGonagall is Maggie Smith (man this was awesome casting choices, everyone is perfect) thumbup.gif She captures the severe exterior yet caring & slightly rebellious interior.

Lockhart .. hmm I hadnt expected Brannagh as Lockhart but he plays the role just perfectly.

Lupin is Thewlis or Thewlis is Lupin (I am so glad they changed their mind about casting him as Quirrell). Okay so he & Sirius have been *decorated* for the movies, Sirius gets his tats & Lupin gets his scars & mustach but after seeing the movie, no one else could take those roles.

Erm yeah I could talk about this all day.

So to answer the question, Richard Harris walked straight out of my imagination & onto the big screen. If they had created movie-DD based on my description, it couldnt have been more accurate.
But, with hind-sight, they all fit their characters perfectly. Maybe Madam Pomfrey was nothing like how I imagined... but otherwise yeah most totally exellent casting.

I put Professor Hooch, but really it was a toss up between her and McGonagall... They are both perfect in my opinion.

I cannot agree more! While Prof McGonagall is cast about as perfectly as I could expect, Hagrid just fits every expectation down to the most minute detail. He physically looks (clothing, size, and mannerisms) *perfect* and as Black Badger stated, even sounds as I would expect.

Such fine casting choices overall, however!
