We see a lot of collectibles on display in The Hobbit - ones that you want keep safe and ones that help you keep them safe, be it treasure or your life. Treasure has always been something that thrills Mankind like nothing else. (and Dwarfkind and Elfkind and Hobbitkind and Dragonkind and ... you get the idea.) Weapons of course, have a charm of their own. So tell us : Which of the magical and otherwise objects do you think was the most important in The Hobbit ? If given just one choice, which one would you choose to have for yourself & why ? What would you like to use that object for in daily life ? Which of the magical and otherwise objects do you think was the most important in The Hobbit? First, let me see how many objects there were that I might be interested in: Gandalf's staff(able to create fireworks and other nifty tasks) The two Elven swords, "Beater" and "Biter" Gollum's ring(The One Ring) Bard's Arrow The Arkenstone and other Dwarf booty held by Smaug If given just one choice, which one would you choose to have for yourself & why? Well, I wouldn't want the ring, no matter how tempting the thought of becoming invisible might be, seeing that it essentially was cursed. I'm torn between Gandalf's staff and Bilbo's sword, "Sting" (AKA Biter). Since I can't think of many situations where a sword would come in that handy, I guess I would choose Gandalf's staff. It would be fun to find out just what kind of things it could do! I would always be popular around children who liked fireworks, anyway! --What would you like to use that object for in everyday life? I would like to see if I could make food magically appear with Gandalf's staff. Then I wouldn't have to cook so much! Or maybe it would make a coat or jacket rain repellent! Probably the single most important object was the Ring because although Bilbo used Sting to kill the spiders, and gave the Arkenstone to bring harmony among those inside & outside the dwarf cavern, it was the Ring that allowed this through Bilbo's invisibilty. Although, as Fricka said, Bard's arrow was essential because it killed Smaug, and I dont know that the Dwarfs & Bilbo would have managed so easily otherwise. So I would choose Gandalf's staff because it probably does a whole lot of magic that we dont see and it creates cool fireworks, light and fire. Inquiring about Double-ended Newts Posts: 984 Joined: 4:46pm September 16, 2006 Location: Trying to find the Room of Requirement.	I would want Gandalf's staff. It just seems to be the most majestic of the items listed, and I couldn't think of any more symbolic than his staff.

Not because of how much it'd be worth in material terms, but it's protective value. You'd have a less to worry about going in to battle. Plus, it's beautiful! Biter = Orcrist ('goblin cleaver') = the sword of Thorin Oakenshield As Beater = Glamdring ('foe-hammer') = the sword of Gandalf And I'm not so sure you'd technically call Sting a 'sword' either, since the Elves who forged it doubtless considered it a dagger. (Unless you were Hobbit sized, maybe? ) All plundered from the Trolls, who obviously had plundered them from somebody else.

I believe that all of the magical objects were important in their own way throughout the adventure. But I am going to agree with Moose and say the Ring of Power. It enabled Bilbo to do many of the things that he normally wouldn't have done and he rendered himself invisible during crucial times, such as saving the dwarves from the Elvenking. And it especially helped him to see Smaug's weak spot. If the thrush hadn't given Bard that bit of information, Smaug might not have been defeated. Although I do agree with Fricka that Bard's yew bow was very important. Just an aside; I thought yew was fitting material for the bow; it reminded me of Voldemort's wand as yew is very strong, and it is associated with death and rebirth. Voldemort was obsessed with immortality; and the yew bow was the means that killed Smaug. QUOTE If given just one choice, which one would you choose to have for yourself & why ? I chose Gandalf's staff. As others have said, he was a wizard after all and it would be a very interesting object to have and use it in everyday life.
