We sure do see and get to know a lot of animals in POA; a stag, a dog, a werewolf, assorted owls, a rat, a cat, a toad; but not all of them are pets. Well, Sirius sure is a pet, if you know what I mean, biggrin.gif and Remus too, when he has taken his potion properly, but that is not what I mean.
Anyway, back to the topic, the main pets we see are Scabbers, Crookshanks and Buckbeak. There's Hedwig, of course, but we have seen her before, and she doesn't display any spectacular properties in POA, so we leave her aside for the moment and move on to those who do; reveal astonishing secrets, I mean.

Scabbers : One of the best plot-shocks ever ! Scabbers the rat wasn't really Scabbers the rat, but Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail - the low, stinking, despicable scum (sorry, my bias crept in) that betrayed Harry's parents leading to Voldemort murdering them. What did you think was really wrong with Scabbers ? Did you come near to suspecting the truth ? Do you agree with Wormtail that he was a good pet to Ron whatever else he was ?

Crookshanks : Hermione gets herself a cat (half kneazle) for her birthday. According to Harry, Crookshanks was a big cat or a small tiger and Ron made his dislike of the animal plain to Hermione from day 1. Whatever the boys may have thought, Hermione loved Crookshanks and stood up for him all the way. Did you agree with Ron that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers ? Why did you think Crookshanks was out to get Scabbers ? Just ordinary cat behaviour or something else ? What did you think of Crookshanks associating with the big black dog that later turns out to be Sirius Black - the mad mass murderer himself ?

Buckbeak : Hagrid certainly loved Buckbeak and Buckbeak reciprocated that love, but do you think Buckbeak was Hagrid's pet in the real sense of the term ? Why ? Would you like to have Buckbeak for a pet ? What does Hagrid mean when he says that people can be a bit stupid when it comes to their pets ? Was Sirius an 'animal person' ? Crookshanks seemed to genuinely like him a lot and Buckbeak had no problems with him either, can't say the same for rats, though. lol.gif

I didn't come anywhere near suspecting the truth, I think I was 12 when I first read the book in it's entirety. I completely missed the clues, silly me. As for being a good pet...I don't know, Scabbers didn't really do much, although he DID bite Crabbe and Goyle, which was something that I'm sure Ron appreciated. Other than that...

I agree that it was one of the best plot-shocks ever, finding out Scabbers' true identity. Completely out of left field, for me at least.

I thought Crookshanks was out to get Scabbers for the same reason that Hermione did - Because Crookshanks was a cat and wanted to go after the rat. I thought it was a bit odd that Crookshanks was with the big black dog that Harry kept seeing...it seemed kind of foreboding. I did think that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers before we learned the truth, not out of malice but because, well, he was a cat.

I think that Buckbeak was Hagrid's pet, in a way. I'm not entirely sure that Buckbeak saw Hagrid as his owner or anything, but he did seem to respect Hagrid. I wouldn't want Buckbeak for a pet. Just because I'd be afraid that I'd screw up and say something to offend him and end up in the hospital. XD They do seem like cool creatures (Hippogriffs). I think Hagrid was saying that people are loyal to their pets if they care for them and don't want to see them in harm's way. For a Muggle example, say a dog ended up attacking a person. The owner of that dog might deny that anything happened, because they love and care for the dog and don't want to think that it's capable of something like that. Hermione didn't think Crookshanks was capable of eating Ron's beloved pet. Hagrid case made more sense, since Draco was an idiot in the first place for doing what he did, although Buckbeak could still be a dangerous animal if not treated with respect.

I don't know if Sirius was an 'animal person' persay, but I'd say that he was since he could view the animal perspective better, being an animagus.
