Recently my sister and I was reading in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (for clues right) suddenly she chimed in that how can there be an intricate network of pipes in a castle thats thousands of years old. When Salazaar slytherin first created the chamber, pipes wouldn't be invented for a very long time. And also, the little marking of a snake on the sink, he probably didn't even know what a sink was! So my question is, how did Salazaar Slytherin create the entrance into the chamber? and  how did plumbing come to be in the castle, without the witches/wizards putting the piping in not notice a very large pipe already in place?  :conf:
(sorry, i know i already posted this in another area, but it was in the wrong part of the site!)

Perhaps wizards, which seem to me to be more advanced than muggles, already had plumbing back during the time of Slytherin. Of course, there's always the possibility that there used to be a different entrance, and it was destroyed, so Tom Riddle had to create a new one (by enchanting the sink to open to his Parseltongue). A weak theory, but its the best I can come up with. Maybe Rowling just made a mistake.

This is really no problem at all.  The Roman Baths, built 2000 years ago, ran water through pipes, so this is ancient technology, nothing the wizards wouldn't have known about when building Hogwarts. smile.gif

Same way they have staircases (instead of all stone spirals) and ways to cook (not just over an open hearth).

Even wizards can afford to upgrade now and again!   Wowee! maybe in the next hundred years, electric lights and heat!!

Plumbing goes back a lot longer than people realize, so that's not such a big deal.  The sinks, though, I don't know.

I've been thinking that Tom marked the tap with a snake and created that exit for the basilisk too; I think it makes perfect sense.

Adding to the fact that plumbing could have been in the castle all along, I believe JKR has said that the castle evolves by itself and adjusting to needs.  As for wizards being more advanced than muggles, I don't know if I can agree with that.  They don't use electricity at Hogwarts, everything is lit and heated with fires, and that would include the water.  Just think, if they didn't have house-elves, they would surely get hooked up for power.

If Tom marked the tap with the snake, then logically follows that SOMEWHERE must be preserved you had to speak in Parseltongue in one of the lavatories of the castle to open the Chamber. However, if the snake had already been there, it would be quite obvious for a descendent of Slytherin that it marked the entrance. As for the sinks... the wizarding world seems to be a step ahead of us in practically everything, so why not indoor-plumbing, including state-of-the-art sinks? Mrs.Figgx10's explanation of the self-adjusting castle makes perfect sense to me.

I go with Wizards being advanced, but why is the castle lit by candel's, that's something wizards are behind on.

Why? I haven't read anywhere that they need to be replaced, they don't consume any alternative energy and they provide as much light is needed combined with Lumos  :conf:
