I was 8 years old the first time I read Philosopher's Stone (I'm getting old- I turn 19 tomorrow!), and I can honestly say that Jo never fooled me when it came to Severus Snape. I have to say that I have been a huge fan of Severus from the moment we were introduced to him in the first book- and even though we saw the story through Harry's eyes, I never trusted his perspective on the things that were going on.

I know that most readers hated Severus after Harry's first Potions class; and while I can understand the reasoning behind that hatred, I never agreed with it. I didn't know why, but I automatically knew that there had to be something more to Severus than meets the eye. I was constantly defending him whenever Harry and his friends were trying to connect him to all the bad things that were happenening.

Like the moment when Harry started getting the feeling that Severus was following him. I knew that it was true, but I didn't believe that he was doing it because he wanted to catch him on his own. I figured it had to be because he was looking out for him; mainly because he would have been stupid to try and attack Harry while Albus was at the school, and also because I knew that Severus wasn't evil.

Sure Snape wasn't evil!
My neighbour, grandma, reads Potter too! Yep! She's very advanced and modern grandma)). I keep in mind that time when we were finished HBP. note.gif She cried that Snape is the meanest and nastiest wizard and so on.. but as for me, he wasn't so fool.gif
He could kill Happy, cripple him , but Snape just beat off and vanished. How could anyone believe that he was evil when he didn't damage Harry during 6 years in school?!

But that fact he loved Lily ... headdesk.gif

I remember I thought

1. Gosh, Snape is a horrible person and an unfair teacher

and

2. He's so mean and unpleasant to Harry that it would be too obvious if he were the Bad Guy who's trying to get the Stone.

But I couldn't think of who else would be after the Stone (outside of Voldemort, obviously), so I sort of read in a state of indecision, and when Snape's actions were explained in the end, it made sense in terms of the Stone, and I just went on thinking Dumbledore employed Snape in spite of his obvious personality flaws. And of course my view of why Snape hated Harry was much simpler, because the book didn't reveal much about Snape's history with James.

That's why I said I was fooled, but it wasn't a big deal, because I was sort of hedging to begin with.

Happy birthday, Snape's Angel! bday.gif

I too was drawn to Snape as a character from the beginning. He was always one to watch, and we knew we were seeing merely the tip of the iceberg in PS. Part of the fun of HP has been the peeling back of the onion and learning Snape's story. I always think the term for him is "enigmatic"......

You took the words out of my mouth fidelia ! Those are exactly my thoughts on Snape. Everything was mysterious about our dear potions master - his glittering black eyes, his swooping tendency, his uncanny skills in mind-reading, ......... ! hide.gif His very presence seemed to scream in silence about hidden secrets.

I loved him as a character from the beginning and will always do so. He is a perfect example of the fact that good people aren't always nice. heart.gif

I thought the same thing!! I was also "undecided" (though i did hate him, i felt it was too obvious), and i must say that i felt this way for a long time, till after HBP. right after reading it, i thought he was evil for a long time, However, i truly did, right before DH, think that he could have been good, maybe even acting on DD's orders. There are loads of reasons for the change of heart, but that happened so late that i still believe she got me. Especially in SS (or PS if thats what you want to call it). So at the time i was mostly half and half, but now it seems extreamley obvious!! it makes so much sence. Well done JKR!! clap.gif

I was 11 when I first read SS. Same age as Harry. lol.gif I thought Snape was evil from the start. I was extremely surprised when I read that it was Quirrel who was after the stone. Totally unexpected.

But I still thought Snape was evil. I was kind of on the fence, but more thought he was evil. I did have doubts, though. However, once Snape killed Dumbledore, I really thought he was evil. Once I read the first chapter of DH, I had no doubts at all. I thoroughly hated Snape. I was completely shocked to find out he was on the good side (I'm not going to call him good because he really wasn't very nice to Harry).

I always knew Snape wasn't the one Harry was to be worried about. I knew that Snape had his good intensions. But I also knew that Snape was a bitter, jealous, hateful man that hated Harry because he was the almost exact replica of the 2 people he loved and hated the most.

Some day I'll admit I'm a fan girl. But today is not that day. :)

Best "fan trailer" ever made for Deathly Hallows movie! Check it out! Gave me the chills.

Definitely the first one. I remember my heart punding-pounding-pounding..."...but that man was not Severus Snape..." WOW!

I still look over Book 1 for clues, to see if I had my wits about me when I read it the first time, I could get it. I am convinced even if I desected every single clue and hint, I would not get it.

Jo. You're brilliant.
