Prince Caspian: A comparison of the book and movie ![]() The DVD for Prince Caspian has now been released in the UK and will be released in the US on 1 December (maybe it makes up for us not seeing Twilight until 19 December lol) Did you like the film? How well do you think it represented the story in the book? ![]() What did you think of the costumes? Did you find the fight scenes realistic and exciting? ![]() What did you think of the magical beings and the special effects? How do you think the Narnian creatures compare with those in Harry Potter and other fantasy films? ![]() What did you think of the direction, casting and cinematography?

I have no business replying in this thread because I HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET AND IT'S KILLING ME!!! The pictures you posted look fabulous. I think the movie is being released in the U.S. in early December. I am awfully glad that they were able to keep the same cast. Does anyone know which movie is being made next? It seems like they might want to film the ones that build on the same characters so they can keep continuity, and then save "The Magician's Nephew" and "The Horse and His Boy" for later.

Pyxis, I think its released in the US on 2 December but I've also seen it advertised at 1 December, either way its not very long to go. According to the imdb site The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the next one to be released, so far the release date is 7 May 2010 and they still seem to have the same actors playing the characters. I saw Prince Caspian in May and have just brought the 2-disc collector's edition (I love DVD goodies).
The extras are quite good including Warwick Davis: The Man Behind Nikabrik, which basically follow Warwick around for a day getting in and out of costume, and filming scenes. I thought the movie flowed alright, and the plot made more sense compared to the book, though I haven't read the Chronicles of Narnia in over two years so I might be forgetting things. I've got the seven volume mega-book with all seven stories bound into one book. The cinematography was excellent and especially how they envisioned the land of Narnia, which I learnt from the DVD was filmed in New Zealand, Slovenia and Hungary. Also I think the core cast of the Pevensie children have grown with the films and their acting was much better in this one. Ben Barnes as Prince Caspian was a good choice for the main lead. Peter Dinklage as Trumpkin was one of my favourite characters. I wish the centaurs in the HP movies looked just as good as the centaurs in Narnia. -------------------- Siggie avatar by Hagiographer13 |

The extras are quite good including Warwick Davis: The Man Behind Nikabrik, which basically follow Warwick around for a day getting in and out of costume, and filming scenes. Ooh! I am really looking forward to getting my DVD copy of this movie. QUOTE I thought the movie flowed alright, and the plot made more sense compared to the book, though I haven't read the Chronicles of Narnia in over two years so I might be forgetting things. I've got the seven volume mega-book with all seven stories bound into one book. I agree, having seen the movie a couple of times last June/July. It makes more sense to have Prince Caspian as a similar age to Peter, the High king, and not the little boy of the BBC program. It makes more sense of the mere three year Narnian gap in time between the events of Prince Caspian and the events of Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It also makes more sense of Caspian's eventual choice of queen. And it also makes good sense of Susan Pevensie, the overall character of the series. This is a young woman who in Prince Caspian would still have unwanted memories of being an adult and her disastrous flirtation with marrying Rabadash in The Horse and his Boy, when she, Edmund and their entourage had to escape from Tashbaan. And now in this film, not only is there an attraction between herself and Prince Caspian, but also she has a male admirer in real life Britain. QUOTE The cinematography was excellent and especially how they envisioned the land of Narnia, which I learnt from the DVD was filmed in New Zealand, Slovenia and Hungary. I wish the centaurs in the HP movies looked just as good as the centaurs in Narnia. The Narnia films so far have the unmistakable imprint of WETA workshops, a New Zealand outfit which did so much of the special effects, costumes etc for the Lord of the Rings movies. But even if WETA isn't involved in the Harry Potter movies, I have to admit both series are a long way better in this sort of thing than the clunky FX etc of the BBC editions. I was very disappointed in this movie because it strayed so far from the book. Prince Caspian is actually my favorite book of the series, and I was frustrated by how callously the plot was ignored (it was something I had feared for LOTR, but fortunately they did a fantastic job on those movies)
First, they took out the whole "faith lets you see" thing with Lucy and Aslan in which first Lucy sees, then Edmund, then Peter, and finally Susan. Susan apologizes to Lucy, and eventually Trumpkin sees Aslan too (after he has been tossed a bit). They changed Aslan's lines to Lucy, basically from Aslan seeming bigger because Lucy has grown to Aslan actually being bigger, and acknowledging that. Lucy also insists that she will follow Aslan regardless of whether or not the others follow her, and Edmund backs her up in this. Caspian's age also REALLY bothered me in this -he looked like he should in Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but not this book/ movie. He's meant to be younger - I actually preferred the BBC versions just because the respected the story more. Ben Barnes looks about 5 years older than all the other Pevensies. If they wanted to match him to the actor playing Peter, they could have picked someone around age 18 - 20 not someone 25 - he is still supposed to around Peter's age but a little younger (I always pictured him 14-16 in the book). He seems to be too old to be doing all this self-discovery and having a tutor. The stupid romance bit made me want to gag too - it was way to syrupy and un-developed. I missed the connections to the other characters that Aslan helped free in the book (the teacher who had horrible pig-like students, the schoolgirl who was teased, etc) and the romp with wine and food and good times that Susan and Lucy had. I miss the naiids, dryads, Bacchus, etc. The special effects in this movie were brilliant, but they do not make up for storytelling. I felt like it was all battle scenes without much character development, or artificial character development. The assault on Miraz's castle was ridiculous. Reepicheep looked great, but As far as the good things - I thought they did a great job with casting the Telmaranians for the most part, and giving them more of a backstory, but that doesn't make up for the film. I REALLY hope they do a better job on Voyage of the Dawn Treader - there are some pretty creepy moments in that book, and it should be able to translate. -------------------- INTJ - Severus Snape

I just finished watching the DVD. Yes, it differs from the book in many ways, but I had expected that. Overall, I was pleased with the film, as a film (not necessarily as a completely faithful rendition of the book, but as a reasonably accurate version that was also an enjoyable film).
I would agree with bioteacher about a number of things, such as age of Caspian and the "romance bit" (the film industry simply cannot resist the idea of some kind of electric/romantic/sexual tension or attraction), but in some ways that is an interpretation of the overall movement of the series in which Susan does not return to Narnia (until the end of the series) because she "grows up." I was not as impressed with the special effects presenting the magical creatures as I was in the first film, but overall, it is a beautiful film in terms of setting and most special effects. I would say I was quite impressed with Peter Dinklage's portrayal of Trumpkin. I thought it had depth and complexity of character--stoic, and not at all "cutesy" (as apparently some critics have claimed). -------------------- click the Q "And, if there is need to speak in brief summary of this power, we shall find that none of the things which are done with intelligence take place without the help of speech, but that in all our actions as well as in all our thoughts speech is our guide, . . ."
