Here is my solution to the code in the St. Patrick's Day issue:

T H E G R E A T S H A M R O C K D I S
S O L V E D T H E L E P R E C H A U N
S D R I F T E D D O W N O N T O T H E
F I E L D O N T H E O P P O S I T E S
I D E F R O M T H E V E E L A A N D S
E T T L E D T H E M S E L V E S C R O
S S L E G G E D T O W A T C H T H E M
A T C H G O B L E T O F F I R E C H A
P T E R E I G H T P A G E O N E H U N
D R E D F I V E U S E D I T I O N

Or in normal punctuation:
The great shamrock dissolved, the leprechauns drifted down onto the field on the opposite side from the Veela, and settled themselves cross-legged to watch the match. Goblet of Fire, Chapter 8, page 105, US Edition

When I saw the hint I instantly knew what to do.

Student: Maura
House: Hufflepuff

Place: Great Hall
Irish token: Reel dance
Student: Connor

It's a good start, but you seem to have mixed up the Houses a bit. Perhaps you should re-read clue 1 and make certain you squeeze out all information from it?

As for the gender question on Aisling, let's look closer at clue 5.
"Aisling, who isn't in Slytherin, is secretly in love with the Reel dancer. She didn’t Charm any Shamrocks." So she's a girl. smile.gif

I figured out the answer to the rune puzzle in the May 2nd issue of the Quibbler.

The three horcruxs are:

Locket
Cup
Diadem

The thing they have in common is:

Founders Objects

That was fun. I hope I hid them correctly. If not, my apologies, I've never done it before.

I think I've finally got the Battle of Hogwarts puzzle! I gotta say, this one was the toughest by far.

Peggy fought inside Hogwarts using Incarcerous, was a 7th year Hufflepuff pureblood, and lost her boyfriend.
Jenny fought in the Gryffindor Tower using Impedimenta, was a 7th year Ravenclaw halfblood, and lost her sister.
Kathleen fought in the Ravenclaw Tower using Expelliarmus, was a 6th year Hufflepuff muggleborn, and lost her cousin.
Matthew fought on the ground using Expecto Patronum, was a Gryffindor alumnus muggleborn, and lost his brother.
Steven fought in the Astronomy Tower using Stupefy, was a 6th year Gryffindor pureblood, and lost his best friend.

Congratulations to a correct solution! squee.gif

We're trying to vary the difficulty level between issues. The last few logic puzzles in The Quibbler have been going easier for a while. So this was meant to be distinctly tougher. A Battle to solve it, perhaps. wink.gif Which you won with flying colours. Raven flag.gif However, we won't aim for anything this difficult again in a hurry.

I think I have the answer for the "Battle Logics".

In Gryffindor Tower, Jenny a 7th year Ravenclaw, used Impedimenta, lost her sister and is a Half-Blood.
In the grounds, Matthew a alumni Gryffindor, used Expecto Patronum, lost his brother and is a Muggle-Born.
In Astronomy Tower, Steven a 6th year Gryffindor, used Stupefy, lost his friend and is a Pure-Blood.
In Ravenclaw Tower, Kathleen, a 6th year Hufflepuff, used Expellarmus, lost her cousin and is a Muggle-Born.
Inside Hogwarts, Peggy, a 7th year Hufflepuff, used Incarcerous, lost her boyfriend and is a Pure-Blood.

I hope I got that right, if not, let me know.

I think the solution to the Logic Puzzle in the June 13th edition of the Quibbler is

Leftmost: Verity, cat, nargles, little Hangleton, Fourth
Left: Uric, owl, Blibbering Humdinger, Abergavenny, fifth
Middle: Paul, Niffler, Heliopath, Hogsmeade, third
Right: Zarah, Grindylow, Aquarius Maggot, Cork, First
Rightmost: Xerxes, Crup, Wrackspurt, Ilfracombe, Second

I guess that differs between persons. Of course you can construct a logigrid and use that to solve them, I know of at least one Quibblet who does this regularly. smile.gif

I, however, have never been a friend of the logigrid. I often find it at least as confusing looking at spread X's and -'s, as the original clues in text. So what I tend to do when I solve a logic riddle is to grab a pen and a lot of papers and note down what the clues tell me in some sort of short notation, and also matching all that can be matched just from the clues, as well as what possibilities are left after I've discarded any that were explicitly eliminated in the clues.

Then I tend to look at my paper and consider which of the "things" that should be matched that I know most about after this first match and elimination round. And so I take a different paper, or part of paper and write up all existing such, with what I know of them. Sometimes I get a few different such listings on the paper. As in one for example matches all I know for each name and the other all I know for each shoe size.

Also I tend to as quickly as it is practical revert the eliminations to the possibilities left. Let's say that I have five different shoe colours to match for each person and I know that Bert's shoes are neither black or green. Then that's the same as to say that his has any of the other three colours. Also I always print the clues on paper or copy them to a word document or something so I can mark a clue (or a part there of) as soon as I have made use of all it contains, so that for each time I re-read the clues and am able to match more things together, I get fewer clues to re-examine.

Having done that, more information from the logic riddle will be able to match up, or eliminate as possibilities and by repeating the procedure the answer will fall out eventually. If it doesn't, it means I have over looked a clue or interpreted something wrongly. And if I can't spot where the problem is, I generally put it aside for awhile and start over on some new pieces of paper. smile.gif

Was it this type of answer you were looking for, greatpetie83 or was it a more detailed guide on how such a thing work?

How do others go about it?

Yes, that was something I was looking for because with this last logic puzzle you have 6 variables to match up which makes it a very big logigrid so that's why I wondered.
Maybe I'm going to try it the way you do it if I have some time.

Going to do the logic puzzle now.

Update: failed with the logic puzzle, made a mistake somewhere with the order to leave, better luck next time.

I'm affraid this isn't correct. To begin with there are (or should be!?!) 8 blue cells in the crossword, while the word you suggest have nine. Also, while some letters do match the correct solution smile.gif it's not true for all.

If you want help with the solution you could tell me which cells you find what letter in, and that will give me some idea of wich words you have wrong. Or you can simply ask for clues for some words if you already have a good hunch on where the problem lies?

It was a guess based on the letters I did have but didn't have the d's. I guessed those, but now realising there are more spells dat use the same letters. Gonna take another look.

Took another look and it's Evanesco Something totally different... Teaches me not to post wild guesses smile.gif

Yay, mentioned in the Quibbler again. Having another go, the solution to the rune puzzle:

House: Gryffindor

House traits: brave, chivalry and courage

3 witches: ginny, parvati, padma (actually ravenclaw, in movie gryffindor)

they are all: sisters

Congratulations, greatpetie83! thumbup.gif

As for the mistake you mention, I am very sorry. We caught that too late to fix it in the paper. sad.gif Originally, way back when this was first constructed, (before even presenting it to the rest of the Quibblets) the third name was 'Molly'. When I changed that, thinking it made the final part unnecessarily difficult - and also debatable as Molly isn't really a sister as much as she was - I forgot all about how I had phrased the witches tagline.

And in subsequent proof readings, I guess everyone has not payed enough attention to the taglines, just checked the puzzle itself. When we finally caught this, the paper had already been sent to the news agents of TLC. We will certainly look the puzzles through more closely from now on.

I don't mind, but with Molly it could have been interesting, making it maybe a bit more difficult which is not a bad thing.

Larry is 16, the Ravenclaw captain, likes Gobstones, and came in 1st
Adam is 14, the seeker, likes hide and seek, and came in 2nd
Mark is 17, the chaser, likes exploding snap, and came in 3rd
Pete is 13, the keeper, likes chess, and came in 4th
Ian is 15, the beater, likes playing cards, and came in 5th

Welcome to the Leaky Lounge, nathaniel0401! smile.gif

And yes, you are indeed correct! Congratulations! towel.gif

When you post a solution to a puzzle, we have a useful feature here called a 'spoiler tag'. It's a courtasy to anyone who has not yet solved it but happens to look at the thread. If you check your answer out now, you can see what it does. One of the LL moderators have been kind enough to hide your answer with it. This way those who haven't got the solution yet, but happens to look at the thread, can avoid seeing it. To read it you have to highlight the solution. You achieve this by typing

[_spoiler]logic reply[/_spoiler] (but without the underscore '_', replace '_spoiler' with 'spoiler' in the tags) which gives this result:

logic reply.

Answers to the 28 Aug 2009 rune puzzle:

Book to concentrate on (common abbreviation):
OOP

Ministers:
FUDGE, UMBRIDGE, EDGECOMBE, BODE

A politician's title:
UNSPEAKABLE

Related place:
HALL OF PROPHECY

Fun! smile.gif

*************************************

And the blue word in the crossword puzzle is HOGWARTS.

By the way, there are a couple of errors in the list of clues:
"L (1-7)" should be "L (1-6)"
"14 (1-2)" should be "14 (A-B)"

Also fun! biggrin.gif

*************************************

The logic puzzle has defeated me, however. Perhaps if I had 6-dimensional graph paper... (or a more organized brain...)

Congratulations to all Puzzle Solvers of our August Issue! You've made a really good job on these! towel.gif

Welcome to the Leaky Lounge Howler81, BewareoftheNargles, miche and luvpink! welcome.gif

Special congratulations go out to: toast.gif
Bandersnatch for the first posted correct solution to the Rune Riddle and the Hidden Crossword Word!
Howler81 for the first posted correct solution to the Logic Riddle!

greatpetie83 also solved the Rune Riddle correctly,
BewareoftheNargles, Hermy-one Pince, luvpink (and Bandersnatch) also solved the Logic Riddle correctly.

miche - you're posted solution to the crossword is mostly correct, with just two things amiss (whereof one probably is a mistype).

Down 12 (J-M) is a letter too long in your reply, the last 's' shouldn't be there. I assume a mistype in reprinting the solution here.

Down 1 (H-M), however, is wrong. But all the crossing words' letters are still correct, so you've had really bad luck in finding a different character that fits in the grid! ohmy.gif Check out the spoiler text below, by highlighting it with your mouse:

The correct answer is:
S lughorn
P
R emembrall
O
U npack
T

We learn from as early as in GOF that Professor Sprout has told fake Moody that Neville was "really good at Herbology". At this point in time I don't think Sirius have even met Neville?

oops.gif Sorry! I'm glad to see you found it funny and that you and others seem to have been able to solve it anyway. Thanks for letting us know!

Finally, a word or two on spoiler tags:

To our newcommers: When you post a solution to a puzzle, we have a useful feature here called a 'spoiler tag'. [_spoiler]logic reply[/_spoiler] (but without the underscore '_', replace '_spoiler' with 'spoiler' in the tags) which gives this result:

For some reason, Firefox users seems to be able to see "through" spoiler tags at the moment, so that's why you had to wait so long to get your solutions corrected.

I think I've also solved the sudoku but as I haven't solved the cipher above I'll just describe the symbols.

The First is a coloured in diamond.
The second is a weird z that ends in a squiggly thing.
The third looks like the head of an ant i.e. a circle with two lines that look like antennae.
The fourth looks like an empty diamond with curved sides.
The fifth is basically just an x.

Prankster's Logic Puzzle in the October Quibbler:

Answer: the first to be Sorted was a wizard.

Explanation: Unless Hogwarts was accepting house-elves and trolls back in '89, the first to be Sorted was either a witch or a wizard. Since the twins make opposite claims about the initial Sortee's gender, one of the twins must be telling the truth. And since we are told that only one of the three pranksters tells the truth, Lee must certainly be lying. But if Lee lies when he says that George is lying, then in fact George must be telling the truth. So the first to be Sorted was, as George claims, a wizard.

Alternate Explanation: One can also simply consider each prankster as the lone truth-teller in turn -- in two cases, this leads to more than one person being truthful simultaneously, which is not allowed. To wit: if Fred tells the truth, then Lee would be lying when he says that George is lying, so George would in fact be telling the truth -- but that is impossible, since Fred and George can't both tell the truth. And if Lee is telling the truth when he says George is lying, then George would indeed be lying and the first to be Sorted would have been a witch -- but then Fred would be telling the truth in addition to Lee, so we have another impossibility. Therefore George must be the sole truth-teller, and a wizard was Sorted first. (In this case, Fred is lying since he claims the first-Sorted was a witch, and Lee is lying since he deceitfully claims that George is lying.)

ETA: Aha! Looking back at previous posts, I see that Fabian Prewett concurs! Cheers, FP!

Congratulations to all Puzzle Solvers of our September Issue towel.gif (which came up 2 October due to Swine Flue and suspiciously Vanishing News Editors wink.gif)!

Special congratulations to:
Fabian_Prewett who was first to post the solution to the Pranksters Logic, although omitting the explanation. And also posted a correct solution to the Rune Sudoku, by way of describing the symbols.

Retrograde15 who got the hidden crossword creature!

greatpetie83 who was first to solve the Rune Riddle and first to find the hidden word in the Rune Sudoku.

And finally... to Bandersnatch who was first to provide the explanation to the Pranksters Logic (along with the solution)!

Congratulations to all! woohoo.gif

Got the solutions to all puzzles, but to get into the Quibbler again is getting a bit to much. Maybe I should make a puzzle for the next Quibbler?

Rune Puzzle:
Ghosts:
Fat Friar
Professor Binns

Quote:
Troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know
By
Professor Quirrel

Happened at Halloween:
Lily and James Potter murdered
Baby Harry orphaned
Death Day Party

Sudoku:
Ginny

Crossword:
Halloween, but with an extra e?

I apologize for my quickness, but have some time on my hands and enjoy the puzzles.

Huh? huh.gif What do you mean?

Congratulations greatpetie83! woohoo.gif A perfect score, indeed!

As for the crossword word, my appologies. There seems to indeed be one 'e' too many! Sorry about that!

So far we still have two puzzles unsolved (or at least not reported back here), though: "Where is Gilderoy Lockhart?" and the five differencies between the pumpkin images.

I've been mentioned in several quibblers in a row for getting (mostly) the rune puzzle first. It's flattering, but even I think it's to much. That's what I mean.

dracomalfoy4evah - that is indeed a very good start. However, there are five differences and you list four. Do you want a hint, or should you look some more on the images? smile.gif

Rune Riddle
Percy
Copper
Brass
Pewter
self stirring
collapsible
shallow-bottomed
bone
flesh
blood
Harry Potter once threw a filibuster firework into a cauldron full of swelling solution
Ron ate chocolate cauldrons spiked with love potion once

No idea if the answer above is hidden or not as this is the first time I've tried to do this. Edited to turn the letters white, hope it works this time.

Haven't done the Rudodoku yet.

I'd be quicker on these puzzles except I spent all day cooking.

Differences:

emblem on engine
tree above engine compartment
rectangular thingy in lower right
building in upper right has different colors
smoke stack on engine has different colors.

Edited to add the differences in the pictures.

In the November "Spot the Difference" I found all five differences. The first is that the chimney changed colour, a tree is missing, the building windows change colour, the cicle under the numbers is missing and there's a piece of wood missing from the tracks. tongue.gif I feel proud last time I missed only one difference and when I saw what the difference was I could have punched myself I was so mad. bruce.gif

highlight the space between the bodies of text for the runedoku answer:

the hp-related word in runedoku is minerva

it took me all day to finish the sudoku, i'm so slow when it comes to it. it doesn't help when you're supposed to be working but are playing hp-related games smile.gif. And i'm so excited i finally got an HP logic puzzle right, usually i'm off by a couple of details. yay for logic and logic grid puzzles!

Well done, to all who participated! Free Butterbeer to all of you, whether you were first or not!

Special Congratulations to those who were first to post the correct solutions to puzzles: woohoo.gif

miche was first to post a correct solution to the Logic Puzzle!

Loader Lady was first to post a correct solution to the Rune Riddle and Spot 5 differencies! You also made a very good Invisibility Charm on your solution! clap.gif The only problem with that Charm is that you will have to ajust it slightly if your post ends up on the somewhat darker background, on which white would be viewable. The easier way to hide things is to use the spoiler tags [*spoiler]Hides this text[*/spoiler] (if you remove the star), shows as: Hides this text In theory this should be the easier way as you don't have to mind the background colour of your post. Unfortunately some modern browsers will outline all text written in the same font and background colour, making the latter method less safe. dry.gif

drarry.girl for the first correct solution to the Runodoku! And I'm glad you enjoyed the logic riddle as well.

Another big round of applause for those who came in second:

Congratulations also to luvpink who came in second on a correct Logic riddle and dracomalfoy4evah who came in as a close second on the Spot the Differencies! Well done indeed! thumbup.gif

For some reason it's often hard to spot the "last" mistake, whichever one hasn't spotted so far. I was impressed you spotted all the tiny ones, so you did quite well then, too. Also you could have got a hint for the last one, if you'd wanted. smile.gif

I solved the rune riddle:
Christmas

Hogwarts
Godric's Hollow

invisibility cloak
Firebolt
Mirror of Erised

Harry visited the Slytherin common room as Gregory Goyle on a Christmas day.
Socks were ideal gifts for Albus and Dobby?
Harry kissed Cho under the mistletoe in the Room of Requirement.

I had fun, thank you!

The Presents: badger.gif

In the parcel that is blue

you might see what is true,

if you have the right talent in you

it'll give many a future clue.

It can also help you in a fight,

if thrown with all your might

it can be a missile in the now and here

knocking out the enemies you fear.

What is it? A Crystal Ball?

[b]

I, the red parcel am bold

in my inside a lot I hold,

if Astronomy is not what you call fun,

I'll show you all you need about the sun!

Planets, moons and stars you see

moving around with their galaxy!

A boy with a scar once for it longed,

yet it never to him belonged.

Name what I hold and you will see,

if not something good will come to thee! A telescope?
[b]

What are inside the parcel with a ribbon yellow,

might become your favourite fellow

of troopers in a battle across the "eld".

They will sacrice themselves, and to your

orders yield.

As they on your orders run,

together you can have a lot of fun,

they will gladly have you lead their fate

and regard you as their best mate -

as long as they are not often checked,

but instead with honours bedecked!

A wizard Chess set.

When my content on you try

you can on others spy:

a word, a whisper or a sigh

will straight to your ears fly...

A red ribbon, have I who tell

I am the silver wrapped parcel!

What do I contain?

Extendable Ears?

Crimson foil and Golden string

A wide array of tastes I bring.

Open me and spill it out.

Some of me will make you shout.

No two of me are quite the same.

What is it I contain?

Bertie Bott Beans.

I hid the answers in white. Hope That's ok, as I am new to this. ninja.gif

I think harrypotter7777 got the "presents" riddles right, except that for the second one, the one in the red parcel:

i believe it's a model of the solar system

Not sure if I'm right, don't remember which book the reference comes from. Anyways, loved the puzzles in this edition. Happy Holidays everyone! smile.gif

Great to see so many puzzlers in here! biggrin.gif I hope you all had a good time solving them!

Congratulations to the first posted correct solutions: woohoo.gif
miche won the Rune Riddle
lostielover won the Runodoku
HarryPotter7777 won 4 of the Parcel Rhyme Riddles
CallMeSeverus won the Christmas logics
Loader Lady won Spot the Differencies
drarry.girl won the 5th Parcel Rhyme Riddle (red parcel)

While HarryPotter7777's suggested solution for the red parcel comes very close, Harry has never longed for any such thing as far as I am aware of. Nor can you see the Universe’s movements quite as easily as in the correct answer, which is mentioned in early POA. Harry spots it somewhere in Diagon Alley, while spending most of August there after running away from home.

da_member0808 also correctly got the blue parcel's content. smile.gif

Some tips on hiding things:
To color several lines with the same color you don't have to color each line by itself. As long as the first line starts with [_color="<somecolour code>"] and the last one ends with [_/color] (replace “[_” with “[“ ), all text in between will get that color, whether it spans one row or several. Same goes for things hidden with the spoiler tag.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all! woohoo.gif

My answer to the quidditch rune riddle,
im not sure it this is right....because it seems like there are mistakes...
oops.gif Ouch! I've closely examined the Runes and realise that one Rune has Vanished. The first ball should be appended with the Rune for a "T" (which is impossible to type in here). The resulting "ball" has been replaced by a more modern variant. My appologies! sad.gif

The rest of the Runes are indeed correct in the riddle. This goes for the other suggested mistake as well.

While your solution on the whole is guite close, it isn't entirely correct. At the moment you have some Runes that are translated into different letters at different places. I assume some of your translations are spelled from memory...

Congratulations to the first correct solutions:
lostielover for the Runodoku! thumbup.gif
drarry.girl for the crossword spell! dance.gif

drarry.girl - How did you manage to solve a non-interactive crossword on the comp? Did you type in the letters in a graphic program or what did you do? It sounds very difficult... huh.gif

The differencies between the images are also a riddle whose answer you can post here!

There seem to be some mistakes in the Rune Riddle.

Romance
Ron, Viktor,
Cho, Ginny, Romilda Vane
A nehklace from Lavender Brown to Ronald Weasley.
A kiss from Ginevra Weasley to Harry James Potter.
Spiders and dementors are examples of creatures you do not want to kiss even under tce mistletoe.
