Do you find you can't remember where you saw a particular incident in any of the Harry Potter books? Or have you forgotten who said what to whom and when? While some may find it easy to remember what significant characters like Severus Snape did and said, who remembers where Gamble and Japes played a part in the Harry Potter novels? Or who can find where Crups were mentioned?

Members are welcome to post queries in this thread. The moderators are able to answer such queries by posting the exact quote from the book, page number, Chapter, and edition of book. Please allow forty eight hours from posting for answering your queries. If by that time moderators are unable to find the correct reference, then other members who know the answer can feel free to post their answer, citing their online references where applicable or the exact page number, chapter, and the details of which edition of the book the quote came from, including whether it was hardback, paperback, film or translated version.

SOURCES:

These are the British editions I would be using:

1. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Paperback film edition, London, Bloomsbury, 2001

2. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Paperback edition. London, Bloomsbury, 1998.

3. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Paperback edition. London, Bloomsbury, 1999.

4. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Paperback edition. London, Bloomsbury, 2000.

5. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Hardback 1st edition. London, Bloomsbury, 2003

6. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince. Hardback 1st edition. London. Bloomsbury, 2005.

7. Scamander, Newt. Fantastic beasts and where to find them. London, Bloomsbury, 2001 (under Obscurus books, Diagon Alley imprint)

8. Whisp, Kennilworthy. Quidditch through the ages. London, Bloomsbury, 2001. (Under Whizz Hard Books, Diagon Alley
imprint).

J.K.Rowling's official website is linked here.

Accio Quote has been linked for Jo Rowling's own quotes from interviews and the HP Lexicon has been linked for the useful Harry Potter information it has amassed.

Shard has listed the United States editions he would use below:

OK, well then, I guess I'll go first. biggrin.gif

At some point, probably in the last two books, Dumbledore tells Harry how sometimes neglect can be worse than outright hostility, or something very close to it. When is that? I always want to use that quote and I can't quite ever find it (short of actually re-reading the whole book(s)).

Thanks for christening the service. smile.gif The quote you were seeking comes from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, p.715 British edition, from Chapter 37, The Lost Prophecy. The full quote is:

(And on pages 834-835 US Hardcover edition. ~Shard)

'Sirius did not hate Kreacher,' said Dumbledore. 'He regarded him as a servant unworthy of much interest or notice. Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike... the fountain we destroyed told a lie. We Wizards have mistreated and abused our fellows for too long, and we are now reaping our reward.'

Crups are mentioned in Fantastic Beasts of course, but also in OotP, eg. UK p.289 (ch 15) when Grubbly-Plank is outlining her lesson plans to Umbridge. I don't remember offhand where the Gamble & Japes reference is.

ETA: Found it. Gambol [sic] and Japes Wizarding Joke Shop in Diagon Alley CoS UK pb p. 48 (ch 4).

Did Zonko's have a shop in Diagon Alley, where did twins open their shop? I remember reading they took over Zonko's old shop. Could be wrong.

Question 1. Zonko's did not have a shop in Diagon Alley. The Diagon Alley shop was Gambol and Japes, as Roonwit said earlier.

Question 2. The Weasley twins opened their shop at 93 Diagon Alley. The reference is: Order of the Phoenix, p. 594-595, Chapter 29 (Careers Advice), British hardback ed.

QUOTE
Fred looked around at the assembled students, at the silent, watchful crowd.
"If anyone fancies buying a Portable Swamp as demonstrated upstairs, come to number ninety-three, Diagon Alley - Weasley's Wizard Wheezes', he said in a loud voice. 'Our new premises.'

Question 3. No the Weasleys did not take over Zonko's Hogsmeade premises, but they did consider it as Shard pointed out in the previous post. These are the references to it in Half-Blood Prince, British hardback edition, which tell what happened to Zonko's Joke Shop.

1. p.228, Chapter 12 (Silver and Opals)

QUOTE
The walk into Hogsmeade was not enjoyable......and when they finally reached Hogsmeade and saw that Zonko's Joke Shop had been boarded up, Harry took it as confirmation that this trip was not destined to be fun.

2. p. 374, Chapter 19 (Elf tails)

QUOTE
'There we were in Hogsmeade, waiting to surprise him -' said George.
'You were in Hogsmeade?' said Ginny, looking up.
'We were thinking of buying Zonko's', said Fred, gloomily. 'A Hogsmeade branch, you know, but a fat lot of good it'll do us if you lot aren't allowed out at weekends to buy our stuff any more....but never mind that now'.

I'd say I knew a fair few quotes from the books and I don't really have a problem remembering the wording but I am hopeless at remembering page numbers.

I was wondering if you could find the page numbers for these quotes:

QUOTE
"Well, I had one that I was playing Quidditch the other night," said Ron, screwing up his face in an effort to remember. "What do you think that means?"
"Probably that you're going to be eaten by a giant marshmallow or something," said Harry, turning the pages of The Dream Oracle without interest.

QUOTE
"Bad news, Harry. I've just been to see Professor McGonagall about the Firebolt. She – er got a bit shirty with me. Told me I'd got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about staying alive. Just because I told her I didn't care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch first."

QUOTE
"I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick."
