Do you find you can't remember where you saw a particular incident in any of the Harry Potter books? Or have you forgotten who said what to whom and when? While some may find it easy to remember what significant characters like Severus Snape did and said, who remembers where Gamble and Japes played a part in the Harry Potter novels? Or who can find where Crups were mentioned?

Members are welcome to post queries in this thread. The moderators are able to answer such queries by posting the exact quote from the book, page number, Chapter, and edition of book. Please allow forty eight hours from posting for answering your queries. If by that time moderators are unable to find the correct reference, then other members who know the answer can feel free to post their answer, citing their online references where applicable or the exact page number, chapter, and the details of which edition of the book the quote came from, including whether it was hardback, paperback, film or translated version.

SOURCES:

These are the British editions I would be using:

1. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Paperback film edition, London, Bloomsbury, 2001

2. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Paperback edition. London, Bloomsbury, 1998.

3. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Paperback edition. London, Bloomsbury, 1999.

4. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Paperback edition. London, Bloomsbury, 2000.

5. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Hardback 1st edition. London, Bloomsbury, 2003

6. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince. Hardback 1st edition. London. Bloomsbury, 2005.

7. Scamander, Newt. Fantastic beasts and where to find them. London, Bloomsbury, 2001 (under Obscurus books, Diagon Alley imprint)

8. Whisp, Kennilworthy. Quidditch through the ages. London, Bloomsbury, 2001. (Under Whizz Hard Books, Diagon Alley
imprint).

J.K.Rowling's official website is linked here.

Accio Quote has been linked for Jo Rowling's own quotes from interviews and the HP Lexicon has been linked for the useful Harry Potter information it has amassed.

Shard has listed the United States editions he would use below:

QUOTE(weasley is my king @ Feb 25 2007, 03:40 AM)

I'd say I knew a fair few quotes from the books and I don't really have a problem remembering the wording but I am hopeless at remembering page numbers.

I was wondering if you could find the page numbers for these quotes:

Here you are:

QUOTE
"Well, I had one that I was playing Quidditch the other night," said Ron, screwing up his face in an effort to remember. "What do you think that means?"
"Probably that you're going to be eaten by a giant marshmallow or something," said Harry, turning the pages of The Dream Oracle without interest.

The above quote comes from: Order of the Phoenix, Brit Hardback ed. p. 215. Ch. 13 (Professor Umbridge) It is in Harry and Ron's first Divination lesson after they had one with Snape and before they went to Professor Umbridge's first DADA lesson.

QUOTE
"Bad news, Harry. I've just been to see Professor McGonagall about the Firebolt. She – er got a bit shirty with me. Told me I'd got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about staying alive. Just because I told her I didn't care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch first."

This one comes from: Prisoner of Azkaban, Brit paperback ed. p. 181, Ch.12. (The Patronus). It is after Harry's first Patronus lesson with Lupin, and a page after the results of the Ravenclaw/Slytherin match.

"I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick."

This is the last of the list. It comes from Half-Blood Prince, Brit hardback ed. p.333. Chapter 17 (A Sluggish memory). It is the detention Seamus Finnegan gets from Flitwick in the first Charms lesson after the Christmas break when Seamus had been discussing forthcoming Apparition lessons with Harry etc.

Hi, can anyone give me the page reference (British Edition) for Draco's quote about how his father wanted him to go to Durmstrang but his mother didn't? I know it's somewhere in GoF but I've just looked through four chapters and haven't found it yet. Thanks.

"My idea of good company, Mr Elliott, is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company."
"You are mistaken," said he gently, "that is not good company, that is the best."

Its Aboard the Hogwarts Express, UK p.147 (ch 11) of GoF, when Harry and friends overhear Draco in the neighbouring compartment.

flowers.gif Cheers Roonwit! No wonder I couldn't find it - I assumed it must have been after the other two schools arrived at Hogwarts! Now I can get on with my essay!

Thanks to all who helped me with my queries. I was just curious as to whether the twins took over Gambol and Japes in Diagon Alley, only because we haven't heard about that particular Joke shop since early on in the series. It's probably not even mentioned in HBP. Maybe someone has better insight. It's not very important to the series I know, but I just got caught up in my curiosity. rav.gif

I have a query that's bugged me for a while, mainly because someone asked for the actual reference and I couldn't find it. Did Molly Weasley ever utter words to the effect that she would have been happy to adopt Harry but DD wouldn't hear of it? If so, which book/chapter/page? I have a vague memory of this, but I could easily be misremembering. And I think it's in one of the later books (ie. 4, 5 or 6) so just somewhere within 2000 pages or so! biggrin.gif If I am misremembering, is there a quote that's on a similar subject, or is it a total figment of my vivid imagination? I remember thinking that that would have made Harry her seventh son (and it's unlikely she'd have had Ginny??)

I think that what you are referring to is the debate between Sirius Black and Molly Weasley about how much Harry needs to be told about the Order of the Phoenix and Voldemort. This started on p.83 and goes to p. 85. OotP, Brit hardback ed. Ch. 5 (The Order of the Phoenix). On p. 85, Molly and Sirius say:

QUOTE
'Well,' said Mrs Weasley, breathing deeply and looking around the table for support that did not come. 'well...I can see that I am going to be overruled. I'll just say this: Dumbledore must have had his reasons for not wanting Harry to know too much, and speaking as someone who has Harry's best interests at heart -'

'He's not your son,' said Sirius, quietly.
'He's as good as,' said Mrs Weasley, fiercely. 'Who else has he got?'
'He's got me!'
'Yes', said Mrs Weasley, her lips curling, 'the thing is, it's been rather difficult for you to look after him while you've been locked up in Azkaban.'

This might not be the exact one you meant, and I will look further elsewhere. But it is getting close to what you may have meant.

Ginny was already 2 months old when Harry's parents died, so not having her wasn't an option. But I think you are misremembering. There are a number of places where Molly is motherly towards Harry - in GoF (last page of chapter 36) she hugs Harry like a mother, in OotP ch. 5 UK p. 85 Molly says Harry is as good as her son in the argument with Sirius, and Dumbledore says at the end of OotP ch. 37 UK p736 that many wizarding families would have gladly taken Harry in and raised him as a son, though no families are specifically mentioned.
