Memories ...

Don't worry, I won't sing! tongue.gif

I came on staff with Leaky one month after the forum opened. I still have the PM that Nick sent me asking me to come onto our staff saved in my computer and a copy of it framed and on the wall behind my desk.

The Leaky Lounge has been a fun-filled and discussion packed place for many members and staff alike. Yet in a site as diverse as Leaky, we all came to the Lounge for different reasons.

While you are celebrating our 5th birthday, think of these things.

* What first drew you into the discussions on The Leaky Lounge?

* Do you remember your favorite discussion topics? If so can you name them or link to them?

* Do you remember or can you find your first post? If so please link to it.

I look forward to reading your favorite memories from The Leaky Lounge.

Doris

ETA: I can't find my first posts. (we lost many of those first few days with a switch from one forum brand to another) Here is the first post I can find.

I was so excited to find teachers who were using, or considering using HP in the classroom.

A very Happy Birthday Leaky Lounge! bday.gif

What drew me into the lounge was following the news and lively discussions regarding the lawsuit between JKR and RDR Books that was on the heels of the release of DH. Leaky followed the suit and posted the news quickly and regularly. I won't link to any of the threads as there were dozens. The topic was heavily watched and monitored to keep things flowing and polite. It was a heady time reading some interesting opinions that were well written, well thought out, fast and furious. It was a difficult time for the lovely and patient moderators here at Leaky, they were put through the mill. (I do believe everyone thanked them and apologized...lol.) kiss.gif

My very first post was:

New poster here...because I have read the books many times, listened to the tapes many times and am looking for new HP information. I believe that makes me compulsively addicted. Pathetic

Nothing has changed for me....still pathetic!

I honestly can't remember how I first came to posting on Leaky. I think I had been listening to Pottercast for a few weeks and somehow stumbled upon the lounge. As for my first post, I'm pretty sure the one I found wasn't my first post, but it was one of my early ones. My First Post

I got into the lounge when I wanted to discuss HP seriously and no one I knew in real life was interested.

My dad had always told me to be wary of internet message boards but after viewing some threads I couldn't see anything scary about HP disucssion, so I joined! It's one of the best things I've ever done! thumbup.gif A great way to release ones self from reality and let you be you!

My first post wasn't my introduction because I hadn't discovered that thread yet. If you go to my post and all the way to the end I'm sure youll find how ignorant I was a few years ago to all this stuff! smile.gif

ETA: Just tried searching for my first post, and I don't think I can find it - certainly not my introduction! lol.gif I must have made so many it only keeps a certain number. I definitely don't remember the one that's there now being my first... or maybe it's so long ago I've simply forgotten!!!

A little search brings up this content as the first I wrote here:

QUOTE(Evreka @ Jan 30 2005 @ 10:15 PM)
QUOTE(NickTLC @ Jan. 28 2005 @ 9:34)
... If you have any suggestions for any specific polls, post them here and we may create them at our discretion....
--Nick
You did ask.

Which is your favourite book and why? (Guess the five poll alternatives )
Which was your favourite HP movie and why? (Guess the three poll alternatives )

Why polls? Because then one quick look will tell you what most people here thinks, which might be very interesting. At least I would think so...
Since I joined Jan 29th 2005, I'm a little bit surprised I waited a day to post, but... it's the first LL finds anyway.

In fact I found the forum almost directly, within the first few days, and spent a little while considering whether I should sign up or not. I'd only just lost the community I started discussing HP in, which suddenly Vannished from the Internet horizon one day, and I wasn't sure I wanted to start over, some place else.

Sometime at the end of January, however, we found out something about the next HP book, possibly it's title or whatever it was, maybe Jo gave an interview of some kind? And I realised I was dieing to discuss the new info with someone. So I signed up, got involved, mostly in Flourish & Blotts, though the post above doesn't show it.

I was one of the people clamouring for Reading Groups here, and participated in the very first trial round where we read COS as if we'd never seen it before (and nothing after it). That was a tremendous amount of fun! towel.gif And once they came up regularly I became very involved in the RGs for the first few years, before my free internet time got Shrunk. wink.gif

I've hung around ever since, more or less active over the years depending mostly on IRL happenings and demands, but also on Staff Duties which severely lowered my posting frequency from time to time.

Through Leaky I've met a lot of interesting people and some of my best online friends I've met here.

IIRC, my first post or something thereabouts had to do with attending the OOTP midnight premiere. What drew me in and kept me here was wanting to talk about the series, the new movie at the time (OOTP), and DH predictions.

I think I found my first post. unsure.gif I got into Harry Potter via the movies and then started reading the books around the time GoF came out in cinemas. I started reading the articles on TLC Main in Autumn and Winter 2006 and then came across Pottercast and finally the Lounge in early 2007 where I lurked for a few months before finally signing up and making my first post on 5 April 2007, which was in reply to a news article about the Hogwarts Express being vadalised in the siding when it was kept at Carnforth in Lancashire.

I'm not impressed! Maybe they could do community service and help clean up the hogwarts express. Antisocial behaviour is a hot topic in Britain at the moment and is growng all the time. Those kids probably all have ASBOs (antisocial behaviour orders) gavel.gif

Hopefully they'll be able to use the train for the HBP and DH movies.

They should be sent to St Brutus's!

I also did a post ten days after that one in response to an update to the train vandalising story.

QUOTE(melj1213 @ Apr 12 2007, 03:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I live really near there and I travel on the train through Carnforth every day going to college, and last summer the train was outside so they could do some maintenance work/cleaning/general repairs on a siding next to the main line. I used to look out for it and I would squee.gif every day when i saw it and then rant about HP for the rest of the journey to college, and all of my friends used to joke about the fact that if I didn't have to keep going to get to college I would have got off the train at Carnforth and jumped on the Hogwarts Express instead....and they also used to joke about the fact that I would prefer to travel to school on the Hogwarts Express than on our train...

Yeah melj1213 it must be great to see the Hogwarts Express every day, but much better to travel on it.

After the first news story about the damage I used Google Earth to search for Carnforth. In the photos below you can see a red train with several carriages behind it underneath the depot roof. I'm not sure if this is the Hogwarts Express but is seems the most likely option. From the pictures it seems like it would have been quite an undertaking for the vandal kids to get to the train., which is a stupid thing to do in the first place let alone vandalise it.

I remember when I joined in early August 2006, I had been a fan of JKR's works and was always waiting for the next book and movie to come out. From time to time I click on my page and can call up the 16 pages or so of my entries here.

Also, certain times when I have been upset and wanted to hear other people cheer me up (and of course cheer other people up) I have come on here to vent. I find this a wonderful place to discuss (not only ) all things Harry Potter, but what is going on in our world.

A very Happy 5th Birthday to Leaky and I hope it has many more. bday.gif harry.gif toast.gif

This is my first post. I'm 53 (going on 12) and don't play many games apart from Harry Potter which I love. I would like:

- cut scenes which are film clips or at least good quality, colourful graphics.
- quick loading times
- OWLs are a wonderful idea, an opportunity to use learned spells and maybe re-sit to improve our grades
- to see the Black Family Tree and be able to examine it
- be able to explore all the locations visited and find secret places and items, collecting things/rewards as we go - flying in some way would enhance the exploration
- the book Ron rather than the Ron of the movies and previous games. Ron should be clever, courageous (he is a Gryffindor after all!) and fun and not sound as though he has a permanent headcold
- Hermione to be less impatient with Ron and have more character
- less repetition of standard phrases such as "collect the beans", "more beans!"
- multiple players so that my daughter and I can play together and compete for OWL grades and better abilities in the DA
- if not beans then collecting something which can be used to gain extra strength, time, power, spells, potions, etc. but not collecting one at a time (like Ron collecting beans one at a time in PoA - very boring)
- the PC version and PS2 version to be different, we were very disappointed after buying GoF to find that it appeared to be the same game (didn't get very far on PC because the image froze within 10 minutes at every attempt), previous games were different and much more fun
- last but not least (for now) if EA recognise that GoF was a disaster how about re-doing it and making it better? If it was as good as PoA with exploration and extras I, for one, would buy it

I also love the idea of being able to Floo to different locations.

Whatever happens we'll buy it on release day and probably take the day off work to play it - can't wait.

This was my first ever post, I'd been reading the books to my daughter since CoS was published and we'd bought the games so were really looking forward to the OotP game coming out. We'd been looking online for information on the books and JKR and had found her site, then saw the link to Leaky and joined up. I joined the PoA RG when it opened and loved the discussions in there and was hooked, I've been unable to stay away ever since.
