I can see the point about Tom Riddle needing protection from the likes of Morfin or Marvolo as a baby, assuming they knew about the baby and cared enough to hound him. But how would the orphanage have been any protection for Tom Riddle? It seemed that the supervision Mrs Cole gave was quite unequal to the task.

I loved the essay! I definitely think that the ring could have been another horcrux. Think about the drastic after effects it had on Dumbledore after destroying the horcrux in it compared to Harry destroying the one in the diary. What if that unknown horcrux was still there after Tom put a piece of his soul in, and Dumbledore actually destroyed 2 horcruxes at the same time?

The essay has raised some interesting questions -like why Merope behaved as she did. But Tom having to go back to the orphanage may be just be the poverty factor at play. He had no living wizard relatives. He was assumed to be of muggle parentage and the wizarding families did not take any interest in him (he was either not lucky enough to know the likes of Weasleys or not good natured enough to appreciate the friendship of such people).
Even when he found out who his wizarding relatives, were it did not help. The other pure blood families seem to have thoroughly forsaken the Gaunts, even though it was common knowledge that they claimed to have descended from Slytherin. If Tom made his accomplishments public, people may have sat up taken notice of him and acknowledged him the heir of Slytherin and would have taken him into the fold. But that did not suit Tom. He had his own agenda, which was better served by remaining obscure. Only his close friends (and future followers) were allowed into his secrets. And the school had to send him back to the orphanage, because students are not allowed to stay on in the summer, and he could not be allowed to roam free on the streets of the magical world and live by his wits. |
