Although he can be a bit thick-headed at times, Ron is one of my favorite characters in the books. He brings a lot of humor to sort of balance Hermione's seriousness.
One of my friends, who's a literature professor, once pointed out that in the books, Hermione is almost always right especially when she is researching, but Ron is almost always right whenever he's joking or making fun of a certain situation. As I was re-reading the CoS last night, I came upon this passage: QUOTE “I wish I knew why someone did try to chuck it,” said Harry. “I wouldn't mind knowing how Riddle got an award for special services to Hogwarts either.” “Could've been anything,” said Ron. “Maybe he got thirty O.W.L.S. or saved a teacher from the giant squid. Maybe he murdered Myrtle; that would've done everyone a favor...” This was referring to Tom Riddle. And he was right! :) I can't find other passages yet, some of you guys might be able to help. If you find any, please post them. :D Also, we know that Hermione has been instrumental in helping Harry get through his challenges, especially because of her extraordinary skills and knowledge. I'm curious to know in what ways do you guys think have Ron contributed to Harry's heroic journey, and how has he, as sidekick and bestfriend, shaped or influenced Harry's choices and his personality? -------------------- |

Ron's role is loyal companion. Not sidekick, loyal companion. He is with Harry through every step of the way. Harry uses Ron as a confidant. They have been together since the beginning and they know that they have a very special bond.
I doubt that Ron will ever leave Harry. They are closer than brothers, and they have been through so much together. Ron is also my favorite character. I just love his banter, and the way he makes fun of Hermione with out making fun of her, you know what I mean? -------------------- "I know who Harry Potter is. Ron's my favorite character as well and I totally understand what you mean about him making fun of Hermione with out really making fun. Ron is Harry's loyal companion. While he isn't as smart as Hermione, his help has always been essential to Harry. He gives Harry advice and some knowledge of the wizard world. He defends Harry against anything. -------------------- Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night-Edgar Allen Poe

I love Ron, and he's totally been of help to Harry. He got them through the wizard chess game in PS/SS, finished off the troll to save both Harry and Hermoine, which led to Harry and Ron befriending Hermoine. Without that whole incident, who's to say that Harry and Hermoine would even be friends? Ron's just a great character, I will be more upset if he dies than if Harry dies. If one of the trio must die, my vote is for Harry. Of course, in my ideal world, Harry would survive as well (along with Ginny of course!), but if one of the three must die, I could best deal with Harry dying, since it would be a heroes death. But I would be DEVESTATED if Ron dies! Sorry, I went off on a tangent for a bit!

Oh, I do hope Ron doesn't die! I think most people will readily accept Harry dying more than either Ron or Hermione, but especially Ron. Although it's scary to see that all three have the capability to sacrifice themselves for one another and for others if there is enough motivation, so Ron dying isn't really so far-fetched. I hope hope hope he doesn't die.
As an aside, I wonder if Ron has managed to convert Harry into a Chudley Cannons die-hard? :D He sure managed to make Harry a Chocolate Frog Card collector. :) -------------------- |

Ron...what can I say about Ron...he's funny, for one.
Ah, now to deeper conversation. Ron is the kind of guy that you would want around if you ever had to go and face an evil wizard. Hermione, too, but you'd want her around as you were having that battle. Ron would be the guy that would motivate you, psych you out, before the battle. I think that is much more meaningful than extra firepower (no, Hermione is not just firepower in my eyes). Y'all know what I mean? Harry just wouldn't be able to get through all he has done without Ron's support and his (if...out of place? Unorthodox? What is the word I'm looking for?) motivational skills. -------------------- You never know from where it will come, but Love will find you soon enough.

Cool topic!
SPOILER ALERT********* Yes, Ron is my favorite, too. In the movies as well as in the books. I agree with all the points made above and would like to add that Ron has good strategy skill, he's a good Quidditch player when he's not psyching himself out, and about as loyal a character as they come. He's funny, pigheaded, insecure at times, a great friend and obviously a passionate character about things he cares most (Quidditch, being loyal to Harry, defending Hermione). On the note of finding jokes where Ron's right I think there are many examples and now I'm going to plough back through the books to find some, but I HOPE this one is right: HBP, US version, page 449 "I love you, Hermione," said Ron, sinking back in his chair, rubbing his eyes wearily. Of course he was joking because she'd fixed his homework, but I am hoping that is another example of Ron being accurate when he's joking. -------------------- |

That is absolutely one of my favorite Ron lines. :) I'm looking through the books, too, for more interesting "accurate jokes". :)

Do you all agree with how Ron is portrayed in the movies? This is one topic that upsets a friend of mine the most when discussing the movies - she feels they reduce him and weaken him - that he's more proactive and stronger in the books. What do you all think?
