Tonight I went over to my grandma's house for dinner with my sister. Towards the end of a conversation, we got to talking about the Harry Potter movies. My grandma said, "I know who Daniel Radcliffe is. He's Harry Potter. But I don't know who those other two are. Himmie and Roland?" Me and my sister could not stop laughing. "No Grandma. Ron and Hermione."
What non-HP screw ups have you had to endure? They can be character mix-ups, wrong names, simple confusion about plot points, or just plain ignorant remarks. -------------------- "I know who Harry Potter is. I just don't know who the other two are. Himmie and Roland?"

Oh my god. Yes. I have had a lot of things like that happen to me. Like my cousin ask me where is Harry Potters scar and what shape is it in. And I'm like are you kidding me right now. I mean I know your not a big fan and everything but that should be like common knowledge.
Also I hate when people also misjudge Harry Potter. Like they say he's just some orphan with a scar trying to defeat some lord guy. There is way more to the story than what appears on screen. Pick up a book and learn how to read, then you'll see what I am talking about. Ok, sorry. I got way off topic, but the people who make fun of harry potter really irate me. |

My son asked me why Jo made "Dumbledorf" gay. My mom asked me the same question, calling Dumbledore the same name. Tsk tsk tsk.-------------------- "I know who Harry Potter is. I just don't know who the other two are. Himmie and Roland?"

My dad often calls Dumbledore "Dumbledork" or "Dumbledorf" Also he calls Hufflepuff something that I can't remember (but I think he calls it Huffinpuff). And he calls Gryffindor "Gryffindork" or "Gryffindorf"
Also my grandma read HBP before I did and she sort of "slipped" and told me that Harry was the Half Blood Prince! I was like no that he isn't! That wouldn't make sense! I knew he wasn't, yet I was unsure because I didn't know who it was yet, and I she just read it, so I assumed she would tell me the truth. But then after I found out Snape was the HBP, I went back to my grandma and asked her why she told me the HBP was Harry. And she said that is what she thought. What non-HP screw ups have you had to endure? They can be character mix-ups, wrong names, simple confusion about plot points, or just plain ignorant remarks. My friend referred to The Dursleys as The Dudleys(And she's read all the books! and when I said it was the Dursleys her response was "Oh yeah, Whatever." Also he calls Hufflepuff something that I can't remember (but I think he calls it Huffinpuff). My dad says Huffinpuff too! He has also referred to the Death Eaters as both The Rat Catchers and The Meat Eaters -------------------- |

Lets see, theres a plethora of things I have had to hear regarding my obcession with Harry Potter, but I wont go into that.
I think the most inaccurate comment made to me regarding Harry Potter was when my Grandma chastised us for watching the movies. Claiming HP was just an evil ploy by the devil and his demonic helpers to persuade children to deviate over to the dark side because Harry Potter himself is a doppleganger of the devil himself. She had never read any of the books, or even watched any of the movies...she even said that about LOTR....Frodo was the devil. Hahaha...she kind of reminds me of Adam Sandlers mom on "The Water Boy"...she thinks EVERYONE and EVERYTHING is the devil. Why is it that a lot of people call Dumbledore DUMBLEDORF....my parents say that.... |

There's a poster from CoS hanging in the Applebees in my town. It's Harry and Ron in the Flying Ford Anglia. My mom asked me the first time she saw it, "I didn't know they had cars back then." I told her the series is set in the 1990s, yes, of course they had cars back then.
When I finished Deathly Hallows she asked me if Harry and Hermione got together. I told her no, Hermione got with Ron and it's always been Ron. This post has been edited by blue4t: Jul 31 2008, 06:36 PM -------------------- ![]() Win-gar-dium Levi-o-sa Ron Weasley: He Does it Anyway. |

The funniest thing that has ever happened to me was at camp. They let you send emails, and it was before HBP came out. I was so excited, and all this news was coming out. The counselors hated me, since my dad would email me whole Leaky articles, and they always asked me who/what/why questions. I told them about Harry Potter. I was at a Christian camp, and they flipped! My counselor said, "Harry Potter! He's anti-God! Doobledorf kills God in book one! I'm sorry, but I can't let you read Harry Potter."
Doobledorf still cracks me up. I had book one with me, gave it to her, and told her to read it. Dumbledore/Doobledorf does not kill God in book one. |

She's a very devout Christian and she swears that Harry Potter is blasphemous because the use of magic is evil. I keep pointing out that Harry and his friends are using their magic for good, to rid the world of evil, but she doesn't listen. **SPOILERS FOR THE 'HIS DARK MATERIALS' SERIES BELOW** Incidentally, I always wondered why the His Dark Materials series never got as much publicity for the same thing, since **SPOILERS!!** Lord Asriel actually sets out to destroy God. -------------------- "Why do you think they're after us, because we're so awesome? They always ask, "How many books are left?"
And, "When is the 8th book coming out?" When will they realize the books are over? Everytime I hear "when will the 8th book come out?", I get happy because I have hope it will come out, and then I become sad because I realize it will never come out. Sorry to double post! Please don't delete this! Delete the one above this one if you have to! Well my friend was like "I hated how in the first 4 movies Hermione and Harry liked each other, and then in the 5th he started liking Cho." What was she thinking? And she also said, "Sirius is Harry's uncle!" I don't remember reading that. And she thought the heir of Slytherin was "the really mean guy's dad." Meaning: Snape's dad. She didn't even know the four founders of Hogwarts. And she says she knows a lot about HP. I think not. I have also heard Dumbledorf. That just always sounds silly, especially when it's usually used by people who are saying something bad about the books. Their point is so much less valid when they can't even get the names right! |

Yeah, I've heard people say Dumbledorf as well...I don't really get it. Is it really THAT hard?
And also, I told my friend that the trailer for HBP was online and she was just like 'whatever it's not important' and 'i am not going to make a special effort to go onto my computer just to watch it'. WHAT? WHAT? Everyone (even non potter fans) should have watched the trailer by now DUH! And my friend has read all the books. How sad is that? Yeah, and someone else I knew thought that Sirius was pronounced Sy-rus/Cy-rus. How off is that! And she would not admit that she was wrong when I corrected her! |

You gotta love local news. Our people are always messing up and talking about random things because they don't think their microphones are on. There was one time where you could hear the spots guy and one of the anchors trying to get the other anchor to do a Homer Simpson impression, it was during a really serious story and you hear them in the background going "doy, doy". I think the Dumbledorf thing might be coming from Gandalf, because it ends in an "f" but, "dor" and "alf" are not similar sounds so who knows ??? -------------------- ![]() |

I am German and my older son (almost 6) already loves and knows HP but our little daugther (2) does not,... sort of....
She loves calling stuff like: "MALFOY!" "Pelliarmus!" in Public. "Voldemort" is also very popular. Then we have these "new" names for some characters, like "Bumblebee" "Prof. Treteimer" (kickbucket, for Trel.), "Prof. Schnapp" (catch) and so on.... can be hillarious to be out with them! QUOTE Calling Lucius 'aka Luscious' Malfoy lucius.gif Lucas. This is a really simple mistake non-HP fans make but being Luscious' lucius.gif biggest fan ever it gets on my wand end! Grrr. What's worse is when someone sees a picture of Lucius and calls him "Draco". So far as being the biggest fan goes, you are the biggest fan, Crypt Mistress is the biggest advocate, and I suppose I'm his biggest defender, as well as the one who lusts most after him. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

My mum once called Vernon Dursley "Mr. Worsley." I was like " What did you just call him ?" ( I must have been really loud and angry because every one in the shop looked at me , but I just really hate it when people get the names wrong! )

I am a social worker, and was introduced to Harry Potter by a young client. I had heard absolutely nothing of the series at that point (granted that was about 9 years ago).
For the life of me, I could not understand what a "House" was at a school. Why was "Voldemort" bad, and why couldn't you say his name? What in the world is Quidditch? What do "J. K." stand for, and who is he? It gets better: How do the pictures/paintings move? What's flu powder (gesuntheit!)? What's a grim? Why does Ron have a rat? And Neville has a toad? What's with all the owls? Why is it bad to talk to snakes? Is Hagrid confused (3-headed dog named Fluffy!?)? Where did this guy get his flying bike (Chitty-chitty-bang-bang)? What's a muggle? Are they bad? Why would wizards be interested in prophesy? Why is there so much alcohol if this is a children's book? Why doesn't any of the story take place in the U.S.A. (I've already been chastised for asking a similar question)? Pure bloods, Half Pure bloods, and Muggle borns sounds like Nazis. Well, that's been awhile ago. Just goes to show you something. "Don't judge a book by its cover - or better yet, until after you've finished reading it!" [EDIT]: Oh yeah! Don't be afraid to rely on your own conclusions, even with the added benefit of interviews and commentary by Ms Rowling, herself! I worked at a hospital archive this Summer. We did a crossword on the break and started discussing Harry Potter and let's just say my colleague hasn't seen the movies many times. Apparently in the fifth movie Harry and some girl go into a cave to fight a dragon.
Don't you just hate having to explain movie plots? I never know what to say. One thing that bugs me is when people pronounce the English names in Swedish. There are like 3 different pronounciations of everything. Not their fault, everyone isn't good at English, but sometimes it gets so bad we don't even get which character the other person means. Or I'm talking about a character and they're going "Who? Oh, you pronounce it like that..." This post has been edited by Choklad: Aug 27 2008, 03:57 AM -------------------- |

my aunt is pretty clueless about harry potter. she's read the first book and seen the first four movies, but only once. so when we took her to see goblet of fire, she absolutely fell in love with the idea of harry and hermione together. my whole family (who all read the books) were in the car with her and we were like "ewww no, thats just in the movies for some weird reason, no no no, you want ron and hermione!" i think we were all just annoyed because she's a real sucker for romance and i know if she'd just read the books, she would have probably become a major ron/hermione shipper. recently, i was with her and she borrowed my phone, which had a background of that new picture from hbp of harry and hermione outside in the snow. she said "ooooh, harry and hermione, you know i like that!" and i just turned to her and said "read the books, then we'll talk!"

The biggest problem around here is that most people seem to pronounced J.K Rowling's name like 'row' as in to fight, not like bowling, I used to correct people seven times a day.

My sister in law, who had never read the books, insisted to us once that the books would only make sense if Harry died in the end. My husband tried to explain to her that it would kind of defeat the purpose of the entire series, and there was no way Rowling would kill him off.
I tell you though, I had a real moment there reading 'Prince's Tale' -------------------- ![]() |

my sister and I have been introducing the hp movies to our friend. she found them a bit confusing. before we watched ootp, we were reviewing what had happened so far. she said of gof "and harry got a new power." it took us a second to figure out she meant priori incantatem. we didn't even try to explain what really happened.

When I think about it: your friend isn't that wrong after all. Voldemort's trying for over a year to figure out this new power of Harry's. But of course Harry will always have "power the Dark Lord knows not".
By the way, my friend exclaimed "STAR WARS", when we watched that scene. This post has been edited by Martok: Aug 31 2008, 05:27 AM |

What really irks me is when people who have never read the books (or seen the movies) use Quirrell's claim There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it.... to argue that the book teaches devil worshipping.
On the more hilarious scale I once took a HP quiz, which was easy to the point of being silly. The only interesting part of it was the question of what Harry's best friends were called? Given the alternatives, the "right" one could only be Rom and Hermione. My Aunt and Uncle wouldn't know anything about HP if they hadn't had the misfortune to hear their niece (ie me) discuss him. ;-) However, nowadays they tend to spot HP news that are big enough to be printed in regular newspapers, and remember them so they can discuss them with me. Um, what? The seventh book is already out, right? In thousands of copies? How would anyone know which was the 7th copy of it? And why would that, particularly, be so great??? For mispronunciations, all those my family have made over the years have already been said... Hermy-oni and Hermy-won, Jenny and Guinny, and my favourite, Huffinpuff (why does it seems that it's always dads making this one??).
And for just a general misconception - and I think I'm pulling from actual comments from the past, but I might be making it all up - but I think when I told/talked to my extended family about Harry Potter (ages and ages ago), they kind of figured that I had a crush on the Character Harry, or Daniel Radcliffe. What a way to misunderstand 'I love Harry Potter; it's the greatest'. -------------------- It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime, so let me say before we part

A couple were in Border's yesterday. The man asked the woman what she was looking for and she said, "You know, that book Richie wants, Giblets of Fire" Maybe she was looking for a turkey on the cover? The man said he thought she was wrong, it was Goblins on Fire. She said that didn't make sense. (Giblets did??) I was quite calm, didn't scream, just handed them the book, apologized for overhearing and said, "I believe this is what you're looking for."

Oi, you know, us Latin Americans pronounce his name like that One of the funniest pronunciations of DD's last name is one of my sister's friend's fault. She pronounces as if it were Italian. the best was always when people from my old church (the one i was raised in) would tell me that it was wrong for me to read books that discredited god and taught me to worship the devil. because heaven forbid they actually read the books...they'd much rather just go based on whatever a few close-minded critics said.

This one is probably my favourite. Once when I was heading home for a weekend I was sitting waiting for my train at Bristol Temple Meads station reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when this old couple came to sit next to me. We ignored each other for a few minutes but then the man leaned over to me and said: 'Excuse me, I see you're a Harry Potter fan, is it platform 12 1/2 we're looking for?' I politely laughed assuming he was making up the platform as a joke. That was when he said: 'That is the name of that platform in the book isn't it?' Realising he was serious I tried not to laugh too much and corrected his mistake. He seemed quite unembarrassed and just chuckled and started talking to his wife about how he can never remember these 'young people's obsessions'. Quite a nice bloke really. The memory of that conversation helped me to endure the terrible journey that followed.

Okay, I live in Norway and the translator over here was the only one to change the names of the character and places in the books. The way I see it, the translated versions of the books are a bad enough mistake! You want to hear a few excamples?
Tonks: Dult Ravenclaw: Ravnklo Hermione Granger: Hermine Grang Ronald Weasley: Ronny Wiltersen Hogwarts: Galtvort Slytherin: Smygard Charlie and Bill Weasley: Rulle and Kalle Wiltersen do you want me to go on?? It's such a shame... What's worse, is that there are as good as none people in Norway currently known as 'Rulle' (which basically translates to 'rolling'... O_o) as their first name (stat: 2006), yet there's 74 people known as 'Bill'. There are 69 known as 'Kalle' (if you were to speak a Norwegian dialect, that might translate to 'calling', but it's not in a dictionary), but 80 known as Charlie. It's not like Norwegian children can't pronounce these ''English'' names (since we are thought English in schools from we are five or six, and sometimes before that.) - we were just really unlucky and got a *restraince herself from swearing* very bad translator. On a personal level, I have known people to go: "OMG!! Yes totally, I'm SUCH a Harry Potter fan! Totally, like, it's awesome! David Ratcliff is just SO HOTT!! what..? no, I haven't read the books.. why should I? They made movies! Duh!" I swear, I almost hit my best friend's cousin because she was "SUCH a Harry Potter fan Totally" ... *crawls up in a corner with a HP book* PS: If you want a list over the English and Norwegian names of stuff, you can go to: http://home.online.no/~bjaas/potter/a.html The website is in Norwegian, but it has the alphabet up in the right corner of the screen and then you simply press there to see the English name of the character, place or book first and then the translated version. I think an English person would be able to use it quite easily. ^^ Enjoy! Also: when I was an exchange student in Scotland, someone came up to me while I was reading HP and the Chamber of Secrets and said: (while I had the book right there) "Oh, those Larry Potter books are sure becomming popular, aren't they?" ... I almost broke a rib laughing so hard. Then I corrected him and showed him the book and he was all: "Well.. You can't expect me to know everything!" xD Scottish people rule This post has been edited by Sophie Treklemmer: Oct 26 2008, 06:52 PM -------------------- Christmas to a child is the first terrible proof that to travel hopefully is better than to arrive. -Stephen Fry |

Like so many of you, I got the HP-IS-EVIL-AND-ANTI-CHRISTIAN thing, only I was banned for many years from reading it. I still remember longingly hanging around my ballet-class classmates listening to them discuss theories and plots. My family always used to give me such a hard time about be so obsessed with the series. This past summer I worked with my mom and our commute to work was about 45 minutes one way, so I suggested we get the books on CD for us to listen to, hoping that perhaps I could chage her thinking. Of course, she loved it, which is exactly what I expected, but I would constantly have to explain things to her and remind her to play close attention at certain points -- I think part of it was that she was driving and not totally focused on the book. But, as often as she had to ask me questions regarding names and characters, I am still thrilled that I finally have someone I can discuss the series with in my home -- and it made the entire summer that much more enjoyable.

My entire family (me, mom, dad, younger brother) pronounced Hermione's name wrong (Er-mee-ohn) for YEARS and YEARS! In fact, I don't think any of us had any clue how to pronounce it until Book 4 finally came out (a year before the first movie, when you finally hear the name spoken), featuring the passage where Hermione explains the proper pronunciation to Viktor Krum.
Oh, yeah, I forgot -- that isn't even so bad! We all pronounced Ms. Rowling's name "Rolling" for years and years as well. I don't think we got that one right until Book 5. Maybe even Book 6! Linnea |

I was reading a news article today on the Harry Potter exhibit in Chicago, and there's a picture of Voldemort's wand. The caption reads "Lord Valdemort's magic wand..." It made me laugh a little bit that a big newspaper would have a mistake like that.

Oh, yeah, I forgot -- that isn't even so bad! We all pronounced Ms. Rowling's name "Rolling" for years and years as well. I don't think we got that one right until Book 5. Maybe even Book 6! Linnea Isn't that how her name is pronounced, "Rolling"?? I used to pronounce the first part, Row, like wow. That is, until I heard JKR say it at the beginning of the first episode of PotterCast that I listened to, and she says "Rolling". Anyway, here's my story I was flying to Atlanta, GA about a month ago or so, and I was reading umm... i believe GoF on the plane. I'd brought a couple of the HP books with me and carried them in my purse. So anyway, I take out GoF and start reading. I'm at the window, there is an older man next to me, and an older lady in the aisle. The lady sees me reading and goes, "Oh, you're reading Harry Potter? Which one is that?" so I told her it was the fourth one. And she goes, "Oh well I'm on the fifth one right now, you'll really like it when you get to it. It's my first time reading all of them." I HATE when people see me reading one of the books and assume it's the first time I've read it... sigh. So anyway, I say, "Oh, I've already read all of them many, many times." And she says, "Oh, well have you read her new one? The next Harry Potter book she wrote?" And I'm like, "Well, she didn't write another Harry Potter book. She's planning on writing an encyclopedia of the whole HP world, but she hasn't started that yet." And then the woman says, "Oh yes she has, I have it and I've read it." I'm thinking to myself, "Umm... if JKR had already written and finished the Scottish book, I of all people would effing know about it, lady..." But I just say, "No, she hasn't even started that yet." And then the lady contradicts me again and procedes to describe not only what the cover of this "encyclopedia" looks like, but the size of the book as well. And I realize she's probably describing Beedle, so I say, "Actually, I think you're talking about The Tales of Beedle the Bard." And she actually looks at me and says, "Yes, that's the one I'm talking about." At this point, I'm trying my hardest to not just slap myself on the forehead... I restrain myself fairly well and say, "Well um, that's not an encyclopedia... it's just a book she decided to write that was in Deathly Hallows, and it's a collection of wizard children stories." And she didn't really say anything to me after that.... but can someone please explain to me how in the world you can get an encyclopedia mixed up with a small, thin book filled with fairy tales??? These were all so hilarious that I can't even remember half of the things I wanted to say when I first clicked into this topic! Here's a couple that happened to me: My older cousin who has read all the books multiple times (and actually read them before I did) and I were talking and somehow got on the topic of the Quidditch team and she called Oliver Wood "Oliver Twist". Yeah.
My mom has seen the first two movies but always confuses them. I'll say I'm watching PoA and she's like "Oh is that the one with the spiders?" And I explain that that's the second one and then she'll say "Oh is it the one where the boy throws up slugs? I don't like that one" and I'm like "no...that's still the second one." Not really mistakes but I thought I'd share anyway: My mom thinks that HP is "too scary" and when I ask her why she says she doesn't like the moving staircases and that people run into walls...because those were pretty much the scariest parts of the whole series right??? -------------------- Avatar by JeffHpFan

Hmm, well my older sister always calls Ginny 'Jenny'! Even though I correct her every time. And I tried to force her to read the books, and she got like half way through the first one, and was like, oh this is too different from the movie, and stopped reading it. She actually had the nerve to say that the movies were better than the books! I got sooo mad at her.
Then one time this guy told me he was watching Harry Potter, and I was like oh really, which one? And he was like the last one. And so I was like Order of the Pheonix? since that's the last movie out so far. And he was like haha what? noo, Prisoner of Azkaban. And so then I had to go into a giant lecture about how he said that last movie, which I assumed meant the 5th one, since HBP comes out in July, and POA is the 3rd one, most certainly not the last one. And at school one day I was sitting in p.e. class, and these girls were talking, and it was right after The Tales of Beedle the Bard came out, and they were like OMG did you know the 8th Harry Potter came out? I saw it, it is like really short!! I was like what the hell is wrong with yall? There is no 8th harry potter, and that is a book that j.k. rowling wrote based on the book within the 7th book, and don't you dare insult it's length, etc. Everytime at school anyone says something about Harry Potter, I go into a giant speech about it, and it freaks everyone out since I am really quiet normally. I don't let anyone talk bad about Harry Potter, or say something ridiculously ignorant about the books/movies though. -------------------- ![]() ![]() "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is Death." |

even thought it was my mom that brought me to the first HP movie when I was 10, she still refers to each one (movie because she doesn't read much) as the final battle. If I happen to mention anything that had to do with a certain one of the books... she'll ask "which one was that again?" and I have to reply with something along the lines of "that was the one with the giant snake/guy in the back of the head/hitting tree."

And I tried to force her to read the books, and she got like half way through the first one, and was like, oh this is too different from the movie, and stopped reading it. She actually had the nerve to say that the movies were better than the books! I got sooo mad at her. Don't worry. i had to correct my mom with that SAME thing yesterday. and that's not the first time (just the first time in a while... we don't talk about Ginny around my house.... I love Hermione and Ron too much) My mom doesnt' even like the movies... I think I turned her off of harry potter with my super love.... This post has been edited by lirene: Jul 7 2009, 11:36 AM
