I have only seen the Emma Thompson one and I thought it was very good - it caught the atmosphere of the novel, but I actually think they improved on a few plot points that show Jane Austen not yet at her peak.
I particularly liked that they gave Margaret a bit more to do. In the book she is an odd character - more than a generic "child" but with little enough to do to make you wonder why she's there. I also thought they made Marianne's sensibility more believable by toning it down. It became a protrait rather than a caricature. For instance, by giving her a view of the house where she would have been mistress, they gave her a real motive for staying out in the rain, instead of it being wilful stupidity. Probably Jane Austen would have felt they went too far in giving her a trigger point for falling in love with Colonel Brandon (He does make the epic drive to fetch Mrs Dashwood in the novel too, but Marianne just doesn't notice). The point of the novel was supposed to be that she got married without being in love with him. But I liked it anyway that they let her finally combine sense and sensibility in her marriage. After all Jane Auten did not insist on Elinor's marriage being purely "friendship and respect"; she allowed them to be in love as well. |

I like Margaret in that version too, I particularly liked the scene with the atlas in the library because her shyness brought out the kindness and humour in Edward's character which I don't think comes across in the book but fits him well. I thought it was very well cast. Greg Wise as John Willoughby was handsome and dashing, just right to capture a young girl's heart and then break it and Harriet Walters as Fanny Dashwood was perfect, she was haughty and selfish which came across well. -------------------- ![]() November's book is The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger "THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" roared Black. *sigh*
I watched this version again last night. And I fell in love with Col. Brandon all over again. It had been several years since I had watched it and, once again, the scenery caught my attention, as did the music. I have loved Hugh Grant in many of the romantic comedies that he's done, but as Edward he really brought an awkward shyness to the character that worked so well. Dreamteam, you're right, about Greg Wise and Harriet Walters. Greg Wise is absolutely beautiful! And he does have that little something that gives you the impression that he's too good to be true. As for Fanny, that character is portrayed as soooo easy to dislike! I adore Elizabeth Spriggs' Mrs. Jennings, as well. She's so robust and full of life, but there is also such a kindness in her, that I could picture many happy times in her home. -------------------- ![]() *heart, mind, soul avi by {{voldy}}* |

Me too, AsYouWish, she's loud and brash and insensitive yet, at the same time, kind and caring so you (or at least I, lol) can't dislike her. Elizabeth Spriggs plays her wonderfully. This is the only film version that I've seen, but I did like Alan Rickman's portrayal of Colonel Brandon, quietly spoken, polite, kind and not at all pushy. He was just right. *sigh* I watched this version again last night. And I fell in love with Col. Brandon all over again. I think that you have just convinced me to head off to get the DVD and watch it again this weekend. I remember seeing it before but don't remember Alan Rickman's role that well. I recently saw Truely, Madly, Deeply though and thought he was just so great in that, and I have always liked him really well as Snape. He is just a terrific actor and so very charismatic. Now I am itching to see it again...haha (I should reread the book instead so I can better discuss it...but really, I haven't got enough time for that at the moment. The movie sounds more my speed for this weekend.) This post has been edited by chloe squibbulus: Jan 10 2009, 07:19 PM -------------------- "I would like to say a few words. Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! In my opinion, the Alan version of this movie is one of the best movies of all time. Alan's performance as Colonel Brandon is just perfect. Before I saw this movie, I wasnt too interested in this whole genre of book or movie but I remember my mom & dad wanted to watch it a few years ago & I just thought, I'm not going to like it (and I dont usually prejudge things)
Alan totally won me over, the whole movie is good but Alan makes it great. Since then I've watched this movie a zillion times, & also gotten interested in a whole lot of *period drama* & other Jane Austen novels -------------------- I'm 1 of the 99.99% W.L.Y.J.
