Hello everyone! I would like to start by saying that I love Jane Austen, I have for years. Pride and Prejudice and Emma are my fav's and I have read the books and watched the movies so many times. I enjoyed Mansfield Park as well. I have watched the S&S movie with Trelawney, Poppy and Snape (te-he) and loved it but I can't seem to get into the book. In fact, I have started reading it about 5 times and just can't seem to get more than a few chapters in. So I guess I am going to throw this question out there for all of you Auten fans that have already finished...should I plow through? Is it worth it when I have tried so many times? I would love to discuss this book in the lounge with all of you but I just don't know if it is worth my time to give it another go. What do you think?

Moose, it's been several years since I read S&S and since I have 3 other books started right now I'm not yet reading it again. I have heard many people say it's hard to get into, my mom and my neice among them. To me, if you can plow through, it's worth it though. smile.gif Col. Brandon is worth it. heart.gif lol!

I'd stick with it Moose...and then try to read a few more JA's directly after finishing it. smile.gif I'm going to be doing that with Persuasion (which I've given up on in the past) after I finish S&S. I find once I get into a writer's style, it becomes much easier for me to pick up their other writings, and it also makes the reading of each subsequent book quicker and easier.

It is taking me a long time to plow through S&S because I'm trying to sort out the Emma Thompson movie (which I loved) from what was originally written, plus to me, the dialogue is full of "doublespeak" (it makes me wonder if these books at least partially inspired George Orwell's work!). What each of the characters says (probably with the exception of Marianne, who I'm liking much more as a character this time around) is generally opposite of what they really mean, so it is taking some time with me to absorb it and "translate" what is actually being said! lol

I do think that once I finish S&S that Persuasion will come much easier. smile.gif

Moose, I am glad that you enjoy the thread. Maybe I (and you) just like the movie because of Rickman and Grant. *swoon* heart.gif I tried to read it again, starting at chapter 10 and it was starting to get a little better. Then I just had an irresistable urge to re-read DH again and S&S got shelved AGAIN. headdesk.gif Oh well, one of these days I will get through it.
