Instructions
Cast on 64, (64), 72 sts loosely on US1½ (2.50mm) DPNs in green (MC).

Join in the round without twisting the sts and knit in (k2, p2) ribbing for 30 rounds.

For sizes M and L switch to the larger needles after these rounds.

The rest of the sock is knit in plain knit or stockinette stitch.

Follow Chart 1 for the stripes on the cuff, which is to say to work 5 rounds of MC and 3 rounds of gray (CC).

Repeat Chart 1 six times, for a total of 48 rounds.

Knit 4 rounds of MC.

Heel
The heel is worked over half the sts (32, (32), 36) plus two sts which are made by picking up
sts on both sides of the heel sts (34, (34), 38).

The two side sts are always knit and will provide a base for picking up the heel sts.

The heel is worked in MC.

Author's Note: If you choose to knit Chart 2 in intarsia, instead of duplicate stitching at the end, wait until after working 2 rows in MC to place the S correctly.

*Row 1: k 36, (36), 38
Row 2: k1, p 34, (34), 36, k1**

Repeat from * to ** 14 times.

Turning the heel
Row A: k 20, (20), 21, k2totbl, k1

Row B: turn the work, sl1p, p5, p2to, p1

*Row C: turn the work, sl1k, k to 1sts before hole, k2totbl (one st from each side of the hole), k1

Row D: turn the work, sl1p, p to 1 sts before hole, p2to, p1**

Repeat from * to ** until all of the sts on the heel have been turned. (20, (20), 22 remaining)

Foot
Knit 1 round in MC, picking up 16, (16) 16 sts on either side of the heel flap.
(84, (84), 90 sts in total in the round)

Place 2 markers, one in each side of the heel, where the border between the picked up sts and the sts for the top of the foot is.

Change to CC for the next 3 rounds and begin decreases like this:

*Knit until 3 sts before marker, k2to, k1, slip marker, k until next marker (32, (32), 36 sts), slip
marker, k1, ssk, k the rest of the round.

Knit one round.**

Repeat from * to ** until 64, (64), 72 sts remain on the needles, remembering to work 3 rounds in CC and 5 rounds of MC.

Knit until the foot is 2½ inches (6.35 cm) shorter than what you would like.

Change to CC and knit 3 rounds.

Change back to MC and knit 1 round.

Toe
Decrease 8 sts evenly in the round.

Knit 5 rounds without decreasing.

Decrease 8 sts evenly, and then knit 4 rounds without decreasing.

Decrease 8 sts, then knit 3 rounds without decreasing.

*Decrease 8 sts evenly, then knit 2 rounds without decreases**

Repeat from * to ** until 16 sts remain in the round.

K2to around (8 times).

Finishing

Break yarn and pull through the 8 remaining sts.

Weave in ends.

Repeat for second sock.

Duplicate stitching
Chart 4 is to be placed 5 rows below the last CC round on the cuff and centered on the heel. Use CC to duplicate stitch over the appropriate MC sts.

Charts 2 & 3 are to be placed 5 rows below the first CC band on the foot and centered in front of the sock. Again duplicate stitch using CC to cover the appropriate MC sts. Use Chart 2 for one sock, Chart 3 for the other.
