Snape, clearly as this book proves, is VERY GOOD at Potions. He is a master at it. He is the Potions Master at Hogwarts. Why then, does he persistently try to become the DA teacher??

I don't know the answer, I am just curious. You'd think that you'd take something you are really good at and want to teach that subject. Plus, if DD really trusts him, why then does he keep denying Snape the role? Why can he trust Snape with his life but not the job of DADA teacher, until this book? Or is he afraid that the same fate of all teachers would have fallen to Snape?? After all, Snape too was DADA teacher for exactly one year (since he is now in hiding with Draco)

Just wondering....

Well actually.....Snape doesn't want to teach the Dark Arts, what he wants to teach is Defense Against the Dark Arts.

I see Snape as one of those people who hates their job. DADA would have made his job more enjoyable since he loves the subject. I think despite the fact that he told Dumbledore that he wouldn't indulge in the dark arts, he still loves it and anything that has to do with the dark arts.

But I think it's interesting that Snape would still want the job...even though he knows that no one lasts more than a year....

Well, either way, whether he wants to teach the dark arts or defense against the dark arts, the point still is - why??? Why is he so keen on it? And why, if he trusts him so much, will DD not let him??? Until now?

Funny, you mention this LoonyLovegood, because I've been thinking the same thing, lately.

Remember how people used to say the job was jinxed? And how Dumbledere said that no DADA-teacher managed to stay for more than a year since Tom Riddle wanted to be DADA teacher? Does this mean Tom jinxed the job?

So I'm starting to think we're overlooking something in this field too! What if Tom sent Snape to Hogwarts, not just to spy but with the specific instruction to become DADA-teacher.
So perhaps we should ask ourselves why did Tom want to become DADA teacher? Is it just to avoid that people find out to many about defending themselves against dark arts, so that Tom would have almost not resistance when using the dark arts?

I've been wondering to why snape and Voldie wanted to be the DADA teacher at hogwarts when they could of easily had access to teaching students the dark arts at Durmstrang where we all know voldies deatheater mate igor kakaroff was the headmaster and willing to teach the dark arts to students. So it is very strange that Voldie would want the DADA job at hogwarts but like DD said Voldie didn't really want the job more like access to hogwarts secrets and magic.

possibly there's not an indepth reason, maybe it's just his love and almost frightening obsession of the subject [as he talks about it in hbp] that have made him want to do it for the past six years. maybe the fact that voldemort wanted it... that is if he were loyal to voldie

He knew more about the Dark Arts when he arrived at Hogwarts than most seventh-years. He must have a passion for them (look at his spells in the HBP potions book) so it's reasonable to think he'd want to teach the topic - even if the topic was how to defend against them. Dumbledore, knowing that Voldemort cursed the DADA job, never gave the job to Snape because he knew that once Snape had the job, he'd be leaving after a year.

I'm inclined to believe that too and assuming that this is correct then why did DD ultimately give the job to Snape?
Did it happen by "accident" or was the moment of assignment precisely timed by DD ? I'm more leaning towards the latter, because if Snape was assigned by accident then that would mean it was DD's last resort? Whereas DD could have re-assigned Lupin or even somebody else of the Aurors? How about the real Moody? DD had too many other options, so I tend to believe he assigned Snape on purpose to become DADA teacher. Wish I knew why though... I can only refer back to what I said earlier in this topic... LV needs Snape at that precise post and DD decides to go along with it?

I'm of the opinion that the damage to DD's hand was probably fatal, but Snape managed to hold that time off for the time being, thus allowing Snape to appear to cast the death dealing spell that killed him and return to Tom's inner circle.

Did I say that right??
