Obviously we know why he hates Harry, and we can guess for Neville (he picks on the clumsiest pupil or he may have known about the potential Longbottom targets on that fateful night) but why Hermione ?

If anyone, Snape could respect her knowledge of magic - all the more impressive since she is a Muggle-born.

I believe he considers her a know it all show off and a parrot, who memorizes the facts from the books and repeats them verbatim.
There might have been some truth to this is the beginning but Hermione always showed she was capable of mastering her class work before her fellow students.
I think he hated Gryffindors in general and since Hermione and Ron were Harry's Best friends that was just 1 more reason to let them have it every chance he could.
Snape was a horrible person and a substandard teacher who was a bitter 16 year old boy stuck in the body of a man.

I think it's a few little things with Hermione. She's Gryffindor, so he's never gonna really be nice to her. She's a friend of Harry's, which is obviously unforgiveable. And I think he still retained some of his prejudice against muggles and muggle borns also.

Somebody also suggested on another thread that he may have been a bit dismissive of her type of intelligence. She seems very adept at learning things perfectly from books, but she doesn't show much creativity herself. Whereas he enjoyed creating his own spells and adapting potion recipes to improve them etc. So he may have felt she didn't deserve all the admiration she got.

someone sounds a bit bitter... c'mon, it's probably because when he was at school he was really smart but was really unpopular and when Hermione is at school sh's really smart and has 2 great friends... one of which is the son of the guy he hated and the girl he luved. also because when he was trying to make fun or Harry in PS Harry was like "i don't know, sir, but I think Herione does".

I think Snape dislikes Hermione because he chooses to, mostly on the grounds that she is a Gryffindor and a friend of Harry Potter. Hermione does start out as an insufferable know-it-all, but even if she wasn't, Snape would have found something else to dislike about her. Had Draco been an insufferable know-it-all I think Snape's reaction would have been rather different.

He does not seem to like Hemione. She seems to know all the answers which it is easy. He had to work for the same answers. Also, after early in the first book she began to hang around with that Harry Potter. Is that not a enough? The only exceptions were memories of Lily. In reality he did not really like anyone.

Besides he was a git.

They got off on the wrong foot because she was a know it all. She also was always with Harry, so that was not something Snape would like.

I think it is just because of the "know it all" factor. I personally don't see how that is a big deal but I guess it just irked Snape lol

i think Snape just dislikes people in general! Seriously!
and the fact that Hermione is close friend with Harry make the level of his dislikes even higher!

Snape disliked her becuase she was friends with Harry. Also, she was muggle born like Lilli. Also Snape generally dislikes Griffendors on principle.
