i think he's jealous because shes way better in school than he was, AND she's a muggle-born.

But i also think that it might be because she's so much like Lily. She's muggle-born, very intelligent, passionate, a good person, and she's pretty hotheaded. All of those are things that Lily had. I think he picks on her because he's probably reminded of how Lily is no longer living. And he's been rejected again. Hermione isnt afraid to stand up to him and fight him, and she hates him just as much as lily did in the end.

Snape knows that Hermione is a really talented witch as he says,

"He has fought his way out of a number of tight corners by a simple combination of sheer luck and more talented friends."

but inspite of this I think he dislikes her because :
* She's a gryffindor and he doesn't want to appreciate or give credit to a gryffindor...
*In some cases(I'm not generalizing) teachers don't like students who are kinda know-it-all..

Oh, I am sure Severus Snape legilimenzed the info out of Hermione at some point. Or simply saw that Hermione was no longer with Ron and Hagrid when he had caught fire. It would have been neet to see 7 Hermione Granger books, to get all the years of all the characters would be pretty sweet. Too bad all rights are reserved and Scholastic and Warner Bros. will throw a fit if we try and write our own versions.

^^I agree, I think that too. I think its because Lily and Hermione are a lot alike.

^^I also agree that theses are good reasons, also the fact that Lily and Hermione are Muggleborns and are 'know-it-alls'. I think JKR made it that way on porpuse or she just didn't notice.

I am not aware of Snape being particularly nice to anyone, I dont think he was worse to Hermione than any other non slytherin pupil. Obviously the book follows the trio so we witness the abuse he gives them. But a few people have said his dislike of Hermione is solely or partially due to her being muggleborn, I definitely dont see where you get this from. Can anyone one enlighten me? Cheers

Except there is nothing to indicate that Lily was a know-it-all. In that year the know-it-alls would more likely be James, Sirius, and Snape himself.

i think it was the fact she was a "know it all", she had the ability to remeber things word for word from books and then repeated it to people. there is also the fact that she is a gryfindor and she was muggle-born. snape hated both of these people on principal.

Obviously we know why he hates Harry, and we can guess for Neville (he picks on the clumsiest pupil or he may have known about the potential Longbottom targets on that fateful night) but why Hermione ?

If anyone, Snape could respect her knowledge of magic - all the more impressive since she is a Muggle-born.

i think, hermione reminds him so much of lily. hermione is really smart and a muggle-born, not to mention, just like lily in her time at hogwarts. and it would've been devastating for snape to be reminded of the one great love that he lost, that's probably why he was like that to hermione. aside from the fact that he never really like anyone. lol.gif

Interesting theory.
I once read a fanfiction that compared Hermione's personality to Snape's.
All things considering, Snape was a brilliant student [an insufferable know it all, if you will], and I suppose he see's a bit of himself in her...And he HATES what he see's. lol

Perhaps being a muggleborn she sort of reminded him of his beloved Lily. Hermione was quite smart and so was Lily.
