Snape truly loved Lily, but did not know how you showed people you loved them. His father didn't love his mother, his mother didn't love him. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with his feelings for Lily. He showed her in the best way he could that he was hers always. Magic was important to him. He thought that it made you a better person. Magic allowed him to control his world. Snape thirsted for knowledge. His desires led him to learn about all magics, and the Dark Arts held possibilities of controlling even more of his world. He instantly took to their power. He had hoped Lily would be smart enough to feel the same desires. He didn't feel their drifting because he was never truly able to understand love. Once he finally understood it, Voldemort had already taken action to eliminate the only thing Snape had ever cared about. His most devastating memory in my opinion would be the day he found out Lily had been murdered due to his information. He became a broken man that day, who had trouble understanding why magic hadn't controlled his world the way he had foreseen.
