Snape was sixteen--seems to be DE initiation age. Which is probably why he couldn't deny that he was lining up to join the DE when Lily conrnered him--it wasn't 'what" he called her, it was that she could see that every thing people were saying about him, the Dark Arts and Voldemort was true:
QUOTE "None of my friends can undersand why I even talk to you. You and precious little Death Eater friend--you see, you don't even deny it! You dont even deny that's what you're all aiming to be. YOu can't wait to join You-KHow_who, can you?" 676It wasn't about liking James more--because she only liked Snape as a friend. As someone on the Sugarquill said the choice was Snape as a friend or no Snape. Because of what Snape had chosen she could not allow herself to be friends with him. And I have to disagree that he didn't think it made a difference when they were nine. " QUOTE Does it make a difference, being Muggle-born?" It sounds like he knew others, possibly even his Mum would think there was a difference, but it didn't make a difference to Him.Snape hesitated. His black eyes, eager in the greenish gloom, moved over the pale face, the dark red hair. "No," he said. "It doesn't make any difference." And I think the memory wasn't just bad because he called her a Mudblood. I think he could see like everyone else, that Lily in spite of everything was very attracted to the Arrogant Toerag and that made him mad. He saw it earlier but she denied it. See page674 in the USA edition. I think he was angry at Sirius because he thinks Sirius told Lily James save his life, but I'm beginning to think it was Lupin who told Lily about James saving Snape's life and didn't tell Snape this until after Sirius died. |
