While re-reading HBP I wondered: what does Snape do in his spare time? JKR doesn't really give us much information here. In HBP Snape shows Bellatrix and Narcissa into a room full of books, but we're told that it looks unused. He's obviously clever, and must read the latest potions and DADA books to remain an expert on both, but this wouldn't fill a whole summer. OK so in HBP and OOTP his summer is probably filled with spying on Voldemort, but before that, in the first four books what does he do in his spare time? I can imagine Mc Gonagall or Dumbledore spending time with family and friends, but Snape doesn't seem to have any of those. And neither would he really like exploring interesting places, like when the Weasleys go to visit the pyramids. So does anyone have any ideas on Snape's hobbies?!

Firstly for all we know ablut Dumbledore his family with the exceptopn of Aberforth is dead. As for Snape he was doing nothing of great importance because it would have mentioned it prolly.

And neither would he really like exploring interesting places, like when the Weasleys go to visit the pyramids. So does anyone have any ideas on Snape's hobbies?! I think he reads---a lot. The books aren't described as looking unused...the room is, presumably because Snape spent about 10 months out of the year at Hogwarts. QUOTE (p 22 US edition): They had stepped directly into a tiny sitting room, which had the feeling of a dark, padded cell. The walls were completely covered in books, most of them bound in old black or brown leather...The place had an air of neglect, as though it was not usually inhabited." Frankly, considering the house on Spinner's End was his presumed childhood home (and thus the last physical reminder of the love of his life and of being neglected/bullied as a child), I would imagine he spent as little time as possible sitting in this house without something productive to do (that goes double when Wormtail was around). Since he also seemed to like hanging around in dark rooms and favored the dungeon at Hogwarts, I also always imagined him having a basement where he messed around with potions. Also, he didn't seem to appreciate socializing, so I think between inventing potions and reading, he kept himself busy during the summers, and may have even considered his home a respite from all of the people and nonsense he had to deal with while at Hogwarts (let's face it, he didn't enjoy teaching). Of course this is a guess, but I think it fits with what we know of him. This post has been edited by SeveraSphyrna: Jul 20 2009, 09:30 AM |

Such a good question. I was looking at Snape's books in Spinner's End in the film, and wondering if he read them. There wasn't much else, and I got to thinking that reading was probably more or less what he did.
But who knows, perhaps he mixed wicked cocktails, it's not so different from potions? He may also have been well into calligraphy, or Japanese tea ceremony. I think he would have delighted in the precision and order. Or maybe that's completely wrong. Perhaps it was huge spattered canvases through which he feverishly gave vent to his angst and torment...? Or some sort of avant garde pottery which he would then smash with a hammer. It really is all speculation. So intriguing. -------------------- Joel: That's the movies, Ed. Try reality.

I can't help but think that he has a shrine upstairs to Lily...
...no but seriously I don't ever get the feeling that the "great" wizards practice their magic...they just seem to have a partnership with their skills that others don't have. (do you notice by the way that some spells are performed without real connection to an action or intent for example the in-built magic of pre-school wizards and witches) Snape I feel therein does not practice, but probably researches classic literature. The inevitable problem I have with thinking about Snape is the Rickman problem, that is his voice, poise and personality transcend my understanding of the books. In my head I see him bent over a book with his hair parted muttering incantations (well perhaps using Non-verbals). That said I can see him as a brilliant golfer. -------------------- Arghhhhh Time Turners - I HATE THEM! WHY WOULD HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED NOT STEAL ONE/MAKE ONE?????

For an unusual reason I think Snape would have been brewing Felix Felicis, in order to get lucky when confroting Lord Voldemort and when he found out about what was going on around (when the death eaters came to Hogwarts using the vanishing cabinet) he keeps on getting lucky!!

I see him reading at home, creating or editing potions and inventing spells.... just random stuff to pass time.. not an important element to the story but funny to think about...
Imagine Snape getting drunk every night XD... He might have a diary he likes to write in... or make voodoo dolls and make Harry's scar hurt... |

I think he would choose solitary pastimes since he's not exactly "Mr. Sociability". I see him reading, doing crossword puzzles, painting ( probably all in black and gray), and brooding. I also think he may have been writing a book of spells and potions, all his own creations. Then he would wait for dark and go for a walk and brood some more. If he traveled I think he would visit places where new spells had been created and perhaps talk with other wizards who taught potions and spells. -------------------- ![]() W.L.Y.J. We love you Jo |

I can see Snape reading great works of poetry and then writing dark, broody love poems of unrequited love, then plotting to give Harry detentions or slapping him upside the head - or both!

I think snape would read a lot of books in his spare time. He would also research potions, the Dark Arts, and ways to beat the Dark Arts spells. He would have had to be very good indeed to stop a curse put by a person by Voldemort from taking effect immediately by halting shrivelling at Dumbledore's wrist. He would also practice Occlumency though I don't know how he would go about doing that. His skill at Occlumency was what kept him alive for three years therefore I don't think he would have taken it for granted. -------------------- ![]() |
