Many of us have speculated as to the importance of socks in the series. Dobby elf.gif is freed with a sock and develops an unnatural obsession with them. Dumbledore claims to see himself holding a pair of socks in the Mirror of Erised. And now, in her Bloomsbury chat, JKR admits that the socks were only a comedy item.

Why socks?

I'm very interested in the fact that she planted a subtle comedic prop that so many of us took to be a deeper symbol, especially now that we know it wasn't...

Maybe there is a personal reason for JKR using socks as a comedy factor in the series. I suppose we created all these wild theories about socks because Jo would not reveal much details pertaining to them before the release of DH.

I myself took part in the socks thread in Unfogging Deathly Hallows. My theory was that the picture on the US cover shows Harry reaching out for a pair of socks (was actually the Elder Wand as we now know), and that Harry would use them like a pair of nunchucks and throw Voldemort a belter, finally killing him by chucking the socks into his mouth and Voldemort exploding.

Alas, it was not to be. lol.gif

BTW I like your siggy avatars.

Now, had she actually done that, they would seriously have been a comedy item! smile.gif

I happen to find the use of socks very amusing in the Dobby context... especially as I happen to have a love of odd socks like Dobby. If only I could find ones with snitches or broomsticks...

And since it seems like a "weirdo" obsession, I wonder if Luna ever had a thing for socks. I don't recall anything in the books.

Now that you mentioned it, there was also a socks scene in DH where Mrs. Weasly cornered Harry trying to get info on what they were upto, and why they were quitting school.

Jo's a mom, I mean she wrote about U no poo, puking pastiles and all of the experimentation by Fred and George while she was pregnant!

I never thought of socks as being anything more (although while doing the laundry I do tend to think of them as sentient and I do let my imagination run off as I contemplate where exactly it is that they get to!)

Awww... But socks can be so much more fun than that! Just take a look at my sock drawer, and perhaps you'll understand. I do think I'm a bit like Dobby when it comes to socks...

Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about that one! Thanks for reminding me.

Any other brilliant sock references?

In undergarment-related news... the Lovegood's house smelled like burning underpants! Now that's comedy!

harry wrapped up the sneakoscope in uncle vernons old knobbly socks didnt he? and that was terribly important as otherwise he might have noticed sooner moodys murderous intentions... yes i think we can safely say that socks were crucial throughout the books and almost certainly have a profound importance. if only we could unlock this, we might understand so much more...
