The Two Towers is a large book, and not only continues where Fellowship of the Ring left off, but then proceeds to introduce a plethora of new characters - such as Gollum - and locations - such as Rohan. This thread is for voicing any ideas or questions that might have come to you whilst reading the book. If you have any theories about a particular character or occurrence, this is the thread for you to share them.

To start off with, I've always been intrigued by Gollum. As we know, he has a bit of a split personality (or, Slinker and Stinker as Sam likes to call him). Smeagol is eager to please Frodo, craves his praise and fawns over him. Gollum on the other hand, obsessed by the Ring, thinks only of getting it back off the Hobbits, even luring Frodo to his death at the fangs of Shelob to achieve his goal. To me, the only reason we still get glimpses of Smeagol instead of out and out Gollum is because of the guilt he carries over the murder he commited to possess the Ring.

So my query is this. If the Smeagol side of Gollum was not still haunted by his actions, did not still feel some remorse for his crime, would the hold the Ring had over him have taken hold completely, so that there was nothing left of Smeagol at all? If one small part of him did not still feel that human emotion - guilt - could anything of Smeagol still remain?
