I'd like to illustrate a (comming) page on my website with a sphinx image. There's no way I can draw it myself (drawing is not my thing). I've tried Google's image search but it generates hundreds of images whereof most are anything but free. sad.gif For obvious reasons I doubt I could find it on any of the sites providing free photos for webmasters. Anyone knowing of any site providing free ClipArt for free use on websites?

Any tip would be most welcome! smile.gif

Does it matter if it's a drawing or a photo? If you just need a photo, then stock.xchng is a good place to go for photos that are free for anyone to use. Otherwise, you might need to pay up and subscribe to clipart.com, which has a good selection.

Or maybe someone else knows of a good free clip art site. I'd actually like to know too, since most of the ones I've seen are crap...ads all over the place and hard to navigate.

Only in so far as it is a HP site, so a stone sphinx doesn't really fit in... And live-looking sphinxes are hard to come by as photos. wink.gif

Do you know if one are allowed to crop and change their images? I tried to find that info, but I'm unsure since I found nowhere that it is allowed (or prohibited for that matter). conf.gif

Evreka,

Here is an image I created...Don't know if you can use it but it's all yours.
IPB Image wink.gif

P.S. the original image is about 4.5 inches square...I could email it to you if you want it. I'm new here so I assume there is a PM (private message) function.

I'm pretty sure you can do whatever you want with them.

And that picture is...strange.

Yeah, them critters tend to be quite shy and thus a bit difficult to photograph. tongue.gif

Other than that, I dont quite understand why you have difficulties locating a sphinx. They seem to be all over the place. Of course the vast majority depicts the stone thingy from Ghiza, but I take it that you dont want that one?

Well, then your options are the classical sketches or maybe photos of old artifacts. There is also one in the HP Lexicon.

Other than that your choice is between the Egyptian style sphinx that is mostly lion or Greek style that is more human and bird. Here is another one of those.

There are also really cute ones like Sophie the Sphinx and more educational ones like The Food Sphinx.

And of course the famous Leon Spinks fool.gif

So I guess it depends on, what kind of sphinx you are after. There are certainly many out there.

As far as the illustrations being "un-free", that might not be such a big problem. You should simply try e-mailing some of the artists and webmasters behind the sphinx'es you fancy for your comming web-site and ask permission. You will find that in many cases they wont mind, as long as you arent using their works for commercial purposes. Some will even see it as a compliment. It never hurts to try - the worst thing that can happen is, that they say no...

biggrin.gif How nice of you! Thanks! Unfortunately that background would clash terribly with my Gryffindor theme I am affraid... I don't know if I could use it if I was allowed to swap the background for another. Would that attempt be OK with you?

Actually, I added the background last and kept another copy of the "sphinx" with a "white background. If you use MS Paint, you can open a background you prefer, open another copy of Paint with the white background sphinx, copy that an lay it on top of your background. Just make sure you use the lower button on the Tool Bar normally at the left...if you have a specific background, I can PM you my email address, you can send it and I will do it for you. IPB Image
