Now here is the Prisoner of Azkaban edition:
I doubt I could phrase it better than Dumbledebbie, in her superb introduction to the previous Book Club THIPs thread. In that COS edition thread, Dumbledebbie noted: "From the beginning JKR has always intended the story of Harry Potter to be a seven part series. She had the entire span of the story planned out before she wrote the first book. One of the things that makes this series truly unique..... is how interconnected all the books are with each other. Because of this there are clues Jo intentionally left laying about waiting for us to find them. She seems to revel in making us repeatedly go ! These 'hidden in plain sight' gems generally come in two varieties": 1. Physical objects or persons placed in the story but written in a way to make them appear as inconsequential when, in fact, they are crucial to the future plot For example:"St Brutus' Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys" is not so much mentioned as bellowed in passing in Chapter Two of POA. Maybe this explanation for Harry being at Hogwarts might not be important if it were not mentioned again in OotP. And what was that reference to "another school" under which Harry was entered into the Triwizard Cup, in the Veritaserum chapter of GOF? What exactly will we learn about Harry's family and Vernon's activities in Deathly Hallows? 2. Specific use of language to allude to something or someone that we, as a first time reader, weren't aware existed For example: When Harry catches the Knight Bus in the third chapter of POA of that name, he takes on Neville Longbottom's name, the first name that occurred to him. Has there been any previous hint of Neville's back story, his future role in each of the following three books, his possible prophetic importance, or his possible role in Deathly Hallows prior to this third chapter of Prisoner of Azkaban? THIPS may hint at something later in the same book or something that won't be revealed until a subsequent book. Maybe we can even find some THIPS that are pointing towards events yet to happen in Deathly Hallows. And maybe, just maybe, some past THIPS become obvious parts of the storyline in this particular book, when we have QUOTE 'Hagrid', said Dumbledore, sounding relieved. 'At last. And where did you get that motorbike?' 'Borrowed it, Professor Dumbledore, sir,' said the giant, climbing carefully off the motorbike as he spoke. 'Young Sirius Black lent it me. I've got him, sir.' Are there any other, maybe better, examples of things hidden in plain sight which matter more in later books? Happy THIPS hunting.
