SEVEN TASKS, SEVEN BOOKS.
There is a theory that the seven tasks Ron, Hermione and Harry had to do to reach the Philosopher's Stone, at the end of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone match the storyline of each of the books in the series. These tasks or obstacles had been set by the various teachers involved with the protection of the Philosopher's Stone, including Hagrid, himself, Professors Sprout, Flitwick, and McGonagall. Quirrell had supplied a troll while Snape was the author of the Potions task and its accompanying Riddle. Lastly, Dumbledore, himself, had set up the Mirror of Erised to conceal the Philosopher's Stone. Once Harry, Ron and Hermione passed Fluffy in Book 1, which was Hagrid's contribution, they encountered the defences of the other teachers, and that these defences matched the events of each of the other books. Thus Harry Potter matches the 2nd task with the Devil's Snare, which was set by Professor Sprout. Professor Flitwick's 3rd task, which involved identifying the right key, reflects the events of Prisoner of Azkaban. Professor McGonagall's transfiguration task with the giant chess set suggests the Triwizard Tournament in GOF, but there is some debate about how Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix matches the theory. There is an obvious correlation with the Half-blood Prince and the potions task, when solving the Riddle was the chief problem. And the idea was that the Mirror of Erised, Dumbledore's task, might say something about the end of the series. The seven tasks have been discussed in various threads discussing Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. These threads include: GREAT WIZARDING EVENTS IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: 1. Before Leaky Lounge's beginning on 28th January, 2005, this archived Mugglenet essay, published 16th November, 2004, referred to how the seven PS/SS tasks might correlate with the seven volumes of the Harry Potter story. The Two-way mirror series of articles also discussed a connection between The Half-Blood Prince and the Riddle of the Phials (or The Chamber of Secrets and the Devil's Snare).
