very interesting question. if i could kill off anybody i would have killed off charlie swan. it would have been devastating but it also would have givenn bella a new life experience. it would be a huge tragedy and it would be interesting to see how the characters arranged themselves around that reality

I would have killed off Jake, for obvious personal reasons ( Like the fact I really dislike him ) and it would have been a sacrifice for Bella, which is something she hasn't had to make.

I couldn't have handled Charlie Dieing. I LOVED Charlie and I would have been really, really sad if he died. I mean like, bawling my eyes out sad. read.gif

for that chololate effect.

How wonderfully put ^^ This is how I feel about these books plain and simple.
I have some of the same issues with BD as other poeple though, namely that the ending is a huge anti-climax for me even though I'm glad it worked out.
Perhaps Alice could have been killed off (not that I dislike her, not at all) at or near the end as her death would have affected many characters quite deeply, not just Bella.
Petunia often said that he looked like a baby angel. Harry often said that he looked like a pig in a wig.

Is it Gene Hunt? ...Is he kicking in a nonce?

yeah i would have been devastated as well, i really liked charlie. but usually the character that has the least effect on the outcome of the story is the one who has the greatest impact on the characters emotionally

so....i've been thinking recently. how bella/edward are lupin and tonks? lupin makes that big deal about how he isn't good for tonks and tonks is like i want you and no one else. edward tries to get bella to find someone else...someone better for her in New Moon. and then the whole baby thing. edward and lupin both think their child is gonna be some kind of monster. they both have that "burning man" thing going on. granted tonks isn't quite as weak and needing of lupin as bella is. but the love story part is pretty similar. the danger and all of that.

it's strange how such little plot lines in HP could make up a whole series of books if focused on.

lupin/tonks are the twilight of harry potter. tongue.gif

You kind of beat me to the question I wanted to ask since there are several who think the story would have been cooler if someone or several died but I will ask anyways.

If you were to kill off anyone in BD who would it be? I wanna know why too because it would totally change the story!

I would have killed off several vampires/wolves during the battle sequence at the end, because I would have turned it onto a battle. Perhaps SM was just too invested, and dare I suggest it, too in love with her characters to do that, and that is entirely her prerogative as the author.

So I would have gone for either Sam or Leah from La Push for a start. The two alpha males storyline doesn't work for me, it's too convenient and so having Sam go out in a blaze of glory would have worked well. The subsequent fall out for Jacob would have added a nice dynamic there as well. A Jacob filled with self loathing was far more interesting to me in the books than imprinted Jacob. Leah was already tortured, a bit of self-sacrifice would have made her character more sympathetic.

Bella needed to suffer some kind of loss. The trade off: eternal life and the perfect husband and child, but at what cost? So I would not have had a seconds hesitation in killing off Charlie, as much as I love the character. Or what about Esme or Carlisle? The parent sacrificing themself for the child. If handled well, it could have been a tear-jerker instead of the X-Men Vampires that never actually did anything ending we got.

A death without too much hand-wringing could have been Rosalie. She didn't appear to actually like being a vampire very much, and like Leah, a bit of self-sacrifice could have been interesting. If one of the Volturi had gotten hold of Reneesme then Rosalie would have been perfectly placed to dive in whilst Bella was doing her love-shield-thang!

I would never have killed off Alice or Jasper - they are far too interesting and likeable.

I would also ban the use of the word chagrin!

Woa, I just had a huge wave of realization wash over me! Your totally right! However, when it comes down to it, I like Lupin and Tonks more. after all, TOnks and Luna (as you can tell from my name) are my favorite supporting charcters. Its funny how Stephie Meyer can write a whole story about that kind of relationship, when Jo just made it part of her complicated plotline.
Harry looked around; there was Ginny running toward him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her.

Not trying to be all Hermione-ish, but i kind of thought of that before. I think that its very very similar. The characters as well as the story. Tonks is very stubborn and determined to love her man, and Lupin is very set on doing whats best for her. just like Edward and Bella.

Watch out! John Granger, the Hogwarts Professor, has fallen for Bella Swan. It's deja vu all over again for the mild-mannered former Latin teacher and Reader in the Orthodox Church.

Of course, I'm not sure if we'll soon be offered the Five Keys to Understanding Vampire Love any time soon, but what to make of this:
QUOTE
Ms. Meyer is aware enough of genre blending that she parodies bodice-ripper fiction as often as not, but, in choosing this category of books and largely conforming to its conventions, she cannot be hopeful of ever achieving critical acceptance. Prof. Alan Jacobs of Wheaton in his patronizing anointing of Ms. Rowling as the Queen of Penny Dreadfuls suggests Ms. Meyer's fate. I suspect she is, at best, destined for endless critical condescension because good writers, really good writers, don't write romance trash. (Just like they don't write science fiction and horror….)
Well, I'm a big fan of Prof Alan Jacobs and didn't find his review of Deathly Hallows to be patronizing at all. Indeed, I fear Granger is jealous of the fact that Jacobs is a much better critic. (And, hey, Philip Pullman would be delighted to be called the King of Penny Dreadfuls. Or has the Hogwarts Prof not read any of the Sally Lockhart books?)

Oh, dear. I suppose good old Prof G will put Bella on his Bed of Procrustes and prove that she too is merely some alchemical formula to be abstracted for a quick buck on Amazon.

Come the words that bubble
Up through broken laughter,
Sweeter than spring-water,
"Gods, I am so happy!"
