Has anyone ever thought of that possibility before?
Like, we know she took sides with Voldemort, but would she actually be a Death Eater? |

No, I don't think she would be. Remember, she had no idea to whom the locket belonged. She claimed it was one of her ancestor's possessions. If she was a Death Eater, I would guess she would claim it was Slytherin's even if it wasn't just to impress Voldemort.
Interesting question though This post has been edited by nerdspeak: Jun 9 2009, 03:34 PM |

Has anyone ever thought of that possibility before? The Trio and Sirius considered it in OotP and decided she wasn't. I don't see there was any advantage to Voldemort in making her a death eater in DH, because she nasty enough to do the things she did in DH on her own account. It is also unlikely she was a death eater because in that case there was a good chance Voldemort would find out about her locket, but Umbridge is still alive.

Though Umbridge likes to settle herself in positions of authority and power she strikes me as the type who'd prefer to have a get out clause. To be a deatheater is to swear undying loyalty to Voldemort and Umbridge is loyal to no-one.

I'm not sure if you're asking would she or was she a death eater but my answer would be no either way.
She wasn't a death eater because JK would have mentioned it, or we would have known. she was at none of their gatherings, no dark mark and she didn't help fight in the battle of Hogwarts. I don't think that she would have been one either, yes she was horrible and agreed with Voldemorts ways and his general train of thought, but she likes control, she sort of created her won little hell for muggle-borns and basically people not in Slytherin. I think she has the same view as Sirius' parents. he told Harry that they thought Voldemort had the right idea, but never joined up (presumably out of fear; support from afar.) -------------------- Those who were dancing were thought to be insane by those who couldn't hear the music ; |

I don't think Umbridge would ever become a true Death Eater. Sure, she was kind of evil, but I think something made her become evil.
Fear- Just like with Fudge, fear makes people do bad things. I am reading a book right now where something bad happens and all of the people get really scared, so they start to do bad things. Even the good people get bad ideas about other people. Manipulation- Maybe Umbridge was taught that violence was the best answer in a problem. Some people don't know that you can settle things peacefully. They have to resort to violence right away to get rid of the problem quickly. They don't want to have to deal with it for a long time.It needs to be over fast. Power- Umbridge, as we all know, liked to be the top dog, to be associated with other top dogs, and she didn't like people challenging her. She wanted to be the one that oversaw everything. She wanted to not seem like the lower people. She wanted to have power. Maybe that is why she was evil. Because sometimes the power gets to your head and you become evil. Umbridge is evil, but she would not want to be in a group of people under one person. She would(if she was a Death Eater)want to take Lord Voldemort's place as the Dark Lord that everyone feared. -------------------- Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. no way! for one thing, umbridge wore WAY to much pink and was WAY to girly to be a DE. i mean, think about it, DE are usually dark and kinda emo. the woman decorated w/ kittens and lace!!! besides, i think she was too bitchy and annoying and the DE would have probably killed her eventually just for the fun of it.

If she was given the choice (for instance, between death and being a DE), she would become a DE, especially if Voldemort is "legitimized" in her eyes. She's one of those who loves cruelty and being in a position to inflict cruelty. However, she doesn't want to be a leader: she also wants to serve a powerful, charismatic leader... especially if that leader hates the same people she hates.
