I think JKR makes a reasonable point that you can still have a respectable pass and do sufficiently well even if you don't get top grades in everything, and even if you are an average student. Ron has to play to his strengths, too.

Yah, I think that JKR wanted to say that not everyone gets Outstanding OWL's, but that's okay to do your best and be more involved in non-cirricular activities

I think it also shows how both Hermione and Ron benefitted from Harry's teaching DADA practical in the DA. It was interesting to see that both Crabbe and Goyle had failed DADA OWLS in HBP. I wonder how Draco did? He obviously passed Potions and also Transfigurations. Was he in Snape's DADA class?

Though no doubt he would have got an Outstanding for Potions I wondered how he did otherwise compared to Ron.

JKR just wanted to let us know/remind us that Ron is not the brightest kid of the bunch(major understatement here )

Didn't Harry only get an O in DADA? Which was to be expected really... I think JKR is simply showing that Harry and Ron are both "good" students, but not exceptional - and to be honest, it would have been completely the wrong message to have them both get lots of Os when they spent so much time not studying. Hermione gets the Os because she worked the hardest to do so (as well as being naturally the brightest of them), whereas Harry and Ron (not so bright and especially not so hard working) get good grades, and then Crabbe and Goyle (the even less bright) do far worse. JKR is teaching kids a valuable lesson - if you want the grades, you've got to work hard to get them.

On rereading that chapter it seemed to me that JKR was showing us that Harry and Ron are pretty equal with respect to courses with the obvious exception of DADA where Harry outshines even Hermione.

Agreed. Hermione is clearly the smartest in the class and Ron and Harry are just "good students" (when they apply themselves). Harry's "O" in DADA is a reflection of his skills and his drive to defeat the Dark Arts (like his father).
