Why did the Witch of Endor give Sophie all her memories and did she realise that the memories would try to take over Sophie's mind? As the Witch and Mars were once in love I wonder whether something from her memories will cause Mars to come over to Flamel's side and defend him against Dee and that somehow she knew that the twins would meet Mars. If she loved Mars why did she turn him into a statue? What did he do that was so bad or so dangerous?

With the revelation that the Witch is Mars' wife, I think we have the first possible clue as to why the Witch gave Sophie her memories. I remember that when the Witch met the twins, she said that she foresaw many outcomes of the future of the twins' Awakening. So I do think that it is possible that she was able to know that there would be a strong chance they would meet Mars. And I like your idea that she may have given Sophie her memories for this reason. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series to see how this comes into play!
I noticed that Mars was very sentimental discussing his twin sons Remus and Romulus. I'm not an expert in Mythology, but I don't think that the Witch was their mother. However, if Mars and the Witch are married, do they have children? If something happened to one of their children, would that have enraged Mars to turn from hero to monster? Would he become The Avenger to avenge his child's death? What if Mars himself was unwittingly played a part in the death of the child; would that have angered the Witch enough to put the curse on him? Just a theory.... As to why the Witch turned Mars to a statue if she loved him, Bastet says this about Mars: "His rage is liable to devastate this world and every adjoining Shadowrealm .... and then either some humani hero or warrior Elder will be forced to destroy him utterly. At least in the catacombs, I know where he is and I know he is safe." (The Sorceress, p.187) She then implies that the Witch loved him enough to protect him with the curse. -------------------- ![]() Join us in Jo's Book Nook to discuss The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge and Skellig by David Almond ........... The mother of Romulus and Remus was said to have been Rhea Silvia who was one of the Vestal Virgins raped by Mars (Ares in Greek mythology) but that doesn't mean that he and the Witch couldn't have had a relationship, it's said that Mars never married, and had a child. He and Aphrodite had four children, Eros, Deimus, Phobus and Harmonia (what a union - the God of War and the Goddess of Love). He did have at least one other child, a daughter, with a mortal woman (who's name I can't find) and that daughter was raped by Halirrhorthius, Poseidon's son. Halirrhorthius was murdered by Mars/Ares who was put on trial and aquitted. I got the impression from these books that the Witch put the curse on Mars to protect him from himself, perhaps she may have been the mortal mother of his raped daughter before she gained immortality and was disturbed by Mars murdering in anger and wanted to protect him from his own anger. I agree it's tenuous, lol. -------------------- ![]() March's Book Nook: The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge/Skellig by David Almond "THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" roared Black. Well the Witch of Endor is an Elder. She was there when Danu Talis fell, just as Scatty (her grandaughter) was. I think you are right about her cursing Mars Altor for his own good. Bastet, his sister said as much and she even admires the Witch for doing it.

I agree it's tenuous, lol. I found the Witch of Endor to be an extremely strong figure in the series....someone with the courage to take strong action in the face of incredible danger. She's a risk taker, alright! Her pro-active stance in giving Sophie all of her memories is a type of insurance, I thought. In the face of the final upcoming battle, the Witch is making doubly sure that her knowledge won't die with her. (TO make an analogy, it's rather akin to Harry giving Neville the tip on killing Nagini in DH, so that his knowledge wouldn't die with him in the forest). The Witch of Endor realizes that her knowledge will tip the scales in the final confrontation, and so she's making sure that the humani have a chance. I"m betting that Sophie will access the Witches' memories regarding the "other" twins, and we'll find out what those secrets are. The Witch of Endor also loves deeply, and is prepared to go to drastic lengths to protect those she loves - even when they enrage her. Mars, to me, comes across as such a wounded and forlorn figure -- someone who has endured terrible losses. While being "god of war" certainly qualifies for that emotional state -------------------- ![]() |

I find it very strange that the Witch of Endor gave Sophie her memories, and Mars gave Josh his talent. That ties the four of them together. Combined with Flamel's comment that the twins are descendents of gods, I think we will see that the relationship between the four is very interesting. For me, it's a bit creepy that the witches memories could erase Sophie's personality, and I suspect the same thing might happen to Josh as he uses the knowledge that Mars gave him...already he is acting contrary to his normal self as he has no fear in the face of battle.
I think the curse that the Witch put on Mars was a type of Elder 'timeout', perhaps he was becoming self destructive, and the Witch is giving him some thousands of years to think about his behavior. (I can see it now, she can't send him to his room, so she creates one for him |
