Wizarding World Environmentalism - does it exist?

On the one hand, we have quite a bit of evidence through the books that the wizarding world has to have a smaller "carbon footprint" than the Muggle one. After all, they don't use eckeltricity, and you have to assume that "evanesco" is much less taxing on the average landfill than filling up a Muggle bin. tongue.gif

On the other hand, we do see Harry putting trash in a bin at Grimmauld Place and Ron referring to putting his tea leaves in one even if they spell "Die Ron Die."

So... is the wizarding world environmentally friendly? What evidence do you see in the books that helps you come to your conclusion?

Happy posting! wizard.gif

Becky, that is a very interesting question. It seems that wizards would have ways to like make their trash disappear, but does that mean that it went somewhere eco-friendly? I don't know enough about the laws of vasnishing in the Wizarding world to know... but there are definitely people like Hermione and Luna who would work to help keep the earth clean if trash wasn't being disposed of properly.

Hmm, yeah a very interesting question Becky! ponder.gif

I've always wondered what happens to objects and animals when they are transfigured or made to vanish in lessons at Hogwarts. Would they disappear into nothing or would the atoms be reformed as the new object? Maybe Professors McGonagall and Flitwick have made it that the animals are instantly released back into their natural habitat once the spell is cast. There is an interesting thread on this in Magical Theory called I think.

Also I have read many an essay on how using wands emits energy, mainly in the forms of light and heat. Does this and discharge release carbon into the atmosphere or is it more of a inert discharge? All those incendios mustn't be good for the environment.

What about magical forms of transport like Floo Powder, the Knight Bus or the Hogwarts Express? What do they run on? I think the Flying Ford Anglia ran on actual petrol/gasoline which obviously releases high levels of carbon into the atmosphere. Not sure about the Knight Bus though or the Hogwarts Express.

I think that overall the wizarding world is more environmentally friendly than the Muggle one, but with all their inventions and labour-saving spells would they be just as harmful as Muggle inventions and labour-saving devices?

I think you're right, Moony_Lupin, about the Anglia using petrol. Does the Hogwarts Express' smoke pollute the enviroment do you think?
And what about the Daily Prophet and/or other magazines? We never hear of anyone disposing of them, but surely one wouldn't just use Incendio on them on the Knight Bus...

Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of equivalent exchange.
In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth . . .
