By now, Harry has had some Sirius ups and downs during his school career. But in sharp contrast to his trials and tribulations of OotP, as he returns to school in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he finds himself the flavour of the month. No longer the shunned pariah, reported in the press as an attention seeking liar, he finds that he is the object of fascinated attention from girls, in particular. It doesn't hurt that he is the new Gryffindor Quidditch captain and that the events at the end of OotP have been discussed extensively in the Daily Prophet. So why is he so intrigued and puzzled by the behaviour of Draco Malfoy, who has had a downturn in his fortunes, and is talking about leaving? And who is the Half-blood prince, whose very handy potions book proves so helpful to Harry?
Some characters in a book are impressive because of their willingness to make themselves available at unexpected moments. Others are too obsessed with their own moods and romantic troubles to be aware that they might be needed elsewhere. Sometimes main characters, irritate the reader when they don't want to believe that all is not well, or when they quarrell with other main characters for little reason. Some other characters manage to be annoying and impressive at the same time, even if they are not in both lists. Who according to you was the most impressive character in Order of the Phoenix and why ? And Who was the most annoying and why ? There is a further twist. Which of the new characters in Half-Blood Prince do you like? And which don't you like very much? There is a whole range of new characters brought to us via Dumbledore's pensieve memories to choose from. Meanwhile, have your views changed about old characters like Draco, Cornelius Fudge, Percy or Professor Trelawney from how they appeared in previous books? You may vote for more than one person in all categories, but please let us know what you think of each character, and the reasons why. Let us explore together the quirks and difficulties of each character. in OotP, the most impressive were Kingley, and Tonks, becaue that is literally exactly how i pictured them in the books. im serious.
and the one in HBP that is annoying the heck out of me is Narcissa Malfoy! UGHH I HATE HER HAIR! Its not blonde all the way through, and thats making me crazy! -------------------- "Dumbledores man through and through arent you Potter?" "Yeah I am." Harry said. Who according to you was the most impressive character in Order of the Phoenix and why ?
Several characters struck me as impressive. Harry, of course. He matures a lot in this book. Dumbledore impresses me for being able to resist the temptation of his youth. Snape because of what we find out later about him in his pensieve memories. In a different way, younger Voldemort struck me as impressive as well, simply because we saw what he was like at eleven. And Who was the most annoying and why ? Annoying? Romilda Vane and Cormac McLaggen. Romilda seems like a stuck up snob, as well as a bit desperate, if she's willing to slip love potion into chocolates she gives Harry. Cormac McLaggen is annoying personified in this book. If I were in Hermione's shoes I would have Confunded him too. It's hard to say, because we don't really see very many new characters in this book. Those that are new still remain mostly minor characters. I had to go with Slughorn, he went against the Slytherin stereotype of always being evil. Yes, he did have typical Slytherin qualities, but he also broke the mold. There are plenty of new characters I don't like that much. The Carrows, but I'd say my view of them is twisted from my impressions in the 7th book. Cormac McLaggen, of course. I felt sorry for both Fudge and Draco. They both brought what happened to them upon themselves, and earned the punishments for doing so (not so much Draco as Fudge, but still, Draco liked talking the talk but not walking the walk). My views of Professor Trelawney changed in the previous book rather than HBP because of the prophecy, so I don't think she counts. Fred and George, I was quite impressed with (perhaps I should put that above). I knew there was more to them than met the eye, but I had no idea they'd be such talented businessmen! |

Percy annoys me most. Job before family & friends? I don't think so.
Romilda Vane I find unneccessary. I just don't like her character. I am impressed with Dumbledore, he shows real strength of mind & character. -------------------- Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titilandus

I am impressed with Dumbledore, he shows real strength of mind & character. I agree, but I was also felt something new for Draco and Snape. Even Draco's parents you really start to get a new perspective on those characters. I'm not sure what it is exactly that I start to feel for them but it's something. |

Cormac McLaggen annoyed me the most. His swelled head seemed to fill the pages. Talk about an ego!!
I loved Luna and Neville's undying support of the cause. That they kept checking their coins was a lovely touch by Jo. They are both truly beautiful characters. I was most impressed with the depiction of Narcissa Malfoy. The fact that she was prepared to protect her child regardless of the consequences and she was willing to go against Voldemort showed that she had strength of character. It was an unexpected twist. -------------------- Maroon to the Bone Four years in a row, what champions. Hugs to Up To No Good for my cute avatar |

It's been a while since I've read the HBP and upon re-reading I'll probably change my mind ^^'
As for who I was most annoyed by, that would have to be Hermione. Upon first reading, her attitude towards both Ron and Harry prevented me from feeling much sympathy for her (I know Ron was being an arse too!) Hermione as a character has not bothered me before or since but in that book she just got on my nerves.. Again the memories of the book are still fairly vague, but I was most impressed my Gred and Forge (U-No-Poo still tickles me ^^) not just because of their marvellous business skills but also their ability to maintain a sense of humour and not take themselves too seriously = ) -------------------- Petunia often said that he looked like a baby angel. I was impressed with the Half-blood Prince, as opposed to Snape. He was almost likeable and certainly could teach a thing or two. Whilst Hermione seemed to be too self-righteous for her own good, until the end, when she admitted she had been wrong about Snape and Draco. Both Ron and Harry had their annoying moments as well, though. Harry was too busy obsessing over Draco to think about the memory he had to get from Slughorn, or even pay attention to his Quidditch responsibilities, whilst I agree that Ron also behaved badly to Hermione. I can't say I liked many of the new characters, apart from Slughorn, Bob Ogden and maybe the Half-blood Prince, himself. Although they weren't evil Romilda Vane and Cormac McLaggan showed that Gryffindor does contain some people who are less than admirable. The people who impressed me, apart from Dumbledore and Fawkes, are Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom, whilst in this book Draco was nowhere near as irritating as he normally is. -------------------- Check out the Beedle the Bard Book Club |

I don't know...I mean, Slughorn and Lavender are DEFINATELY not how I pictured them, but maybe they will turn out alright. If the casting directors cast the actors and actresses, they must of thought they were right for the parts.

Those who impressed me particularly are Snape, Harry, Dumbledore, Ginny and Voldemort. ;lion: Snape must have been under tremendous pressure after making his promises to Narcissa and Dumbledore but he handled it quite well, going berserk only in the end after Harry called him 'coward'. Snape hated what he had to do but did it for it had to be done - I can really admire such a strength. Harry impressed me a lot as usual - his ability to do things when he's scared to death is amazing. But even so, the hardest thing he did was feeding Dumbledore the potion because he loved Dumbledore and hated what he was doing, but he still did it. Dumbledore's poise and polish is something that absolutely staggers me. Where someone else would be in pieces, he's calm and unruffled and goes about talking as if he's at a tea-party. That man is simply awesome ! Ginny's manner of taking things as they came and seizing the opportunity and even more important, letting go, really impressed me. Running towards Harry and kissing him came as easily to her as tacitly letting go of their relationship though the latter must have cost her a lot. Voldemort impressed me wit his determination to get what he wanted. I realise that his goal was to be achieved at the cost of many many lives, but he did not hesistate to mutilate himself and take risks such as no one had ever taken before in his quest to become immortal and I can appreciate his ambition even if I do not approve of it. On the annoying list are Slughorn and Ron during his Won-Won phase. Remus annoyed me immensely for staying away from Tonks the whole year when they both wanted to be together. but I forgave him easily. Out of the new characters, I liked the poor hapless muggle PM. He seemed genuine concened about his people and also had the proper amount of naivete in re all things magcial to make him very human and mugglish. Slughorn, I liked as well as disliked - the way he completely ignoredRon irritated me a lot. This post has been edited by rowena r: Nov 21 2008, 09:13 AM -------------------- ![]() |
