What was the biggest mistake by a character ?, Could the consequence have been averted ?

OOTP was a time for trials and tribulation for many of the characters. With the toad taking charge of Hogwarts, Harry and his friends had a tough time of it, and Dumbledore, though he coped very well, was a bit hampered by the Ministry. Sirius wasn't happy with the circumstances and neither was Snape with his lot. Moreover, Voldemort was manipulating Harry's thoughts. In such an atmosphere, mistakes were bound to happen and they did. doh.gif Some of the obvious mistakes committed by various characters are :

  • Dumbledore made a mistake by not telling Harry about the prophecy.
  • Harry made a mistake by not understanding Dumbledore's intentions.
  • Umbridge made a mistake by calling the centaurs 'filthy half-breeds'. biggrin.gif
  • Marietta made a mistake by ratting out the DA to the High Inquisitor.
  • Snape made a mistake by letting Harry glimpse his worst memory.

What about some of the mistakes the other side made? Lucius Malfoy made a mistake by thinking that he could get Bellatrix to co-operate with him. Bellatrix made a mistake in contradicting Lucius Malfoy's leadership, and the others made a mistake by underestimating the determination of six teenagers to thwart their taking the prophecy.

The consequences of these mistakes are that the bulk of the DE's present were either recaptured or captured for the first time, in particular those DE's that had originally walked free. Bellatrix alone escaped, but it doesn't seem like her dear Dark Lord is all that pleased with her.
