While we're on the topc (sort of) of children's series, did any of you read Nancy Drew or the Sweet Valley High series? I loved those as well
And I think that my first "real" book was Little Women too, Starlysh! But I might be lying completely, I don't exactly remember lol -------------------- http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f249/sammmg/Picture1.png

Oh, wow, who can remember that? When I was little, my mom worked at a library, and would take me with her and sit me down in front of a pile of books. There've been so many that I couldn't possibly tell which was the first one I read!
But yeah, Nancy Drew was an early fav. :) -------------------- "Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it." -Mark Twain

Well, I can't remember specifically (I was only 3 at the time), but it was probably either Horton Hatches an Egg or Make Way for Ducklings.

My parents gave me tons of books when I was little with children’s stories and read them all, but the first book I ever read from start to end and that introduced me to the world of books in general was ” Little Women”. I can’t remember how old I was, maybe 8 or 10. It was a Christmas present from my godmother, the first time anyone gave me a book. I still have it and it’s one of my more precious possessions. Well, I have all my books still with me, but it’s the one I love the most because of the sentimental value.

The first book I read all by myself is "Go Dog Go!" I think I still have it somewhere too....... I can't remeber what the first thick book I read was but I'll admit, I'm book addict. Just hand me a book and I'll at least start to read it and I might finish it if I get into it.

The first book I remember reading by myself and loving was called Come Over to My House. It was about children in different parts of the world living in different kinds of houses. Not exactly a children's literature classic, but I loved seeing pictures of various types of houses and it got me thinking about lifestyles that differed from mine, which is good for an American kid. Sometimes Americans seem to forget that there are other cultures in the world!
When I was 10 I came across an old dusty copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and it was all over. I was obsessed with books! I didn't understand half of Alice, but that only added to the mystery of it all. I asked, but I couldn't find anyone who could explain to me exactly what treacle and comfits were. Our American dictionary didn't include these words and this was before the internet. I guess this is the power of great books: to give a young mind glimpses of times and places beyond its immediate reach. To make the world seem boundless... -------------------- ![]() I called it - June 2007 |

I don't remember the first book I ever read, but the first book that I remember reading over and over and carrying around with me everywhere until the pages fell apart was a collection of Peanuts comics. I loved Snoopy back then.

The first book I can remember reading was a read-along comic book of Treasure Island. The book came with an audio cassette so you could read along and follow the pictures in the book. There was even a bell sound on the cassette that would let you know when to turn the page. I was obsessed with Treasure Island when I was little, and I read that comic book over and over until it fell apart. It's now safely stored away in a ziploc bag somewhere.
The company that sold Treasure Island in this format made other books too: I also had Robinson Crusoe and Arabian Nights. -------------------- Member of the Simmering Suite, HBP Discussion Group 2008
