Why didn't Voldemort kill Lily before Harry?, Why did Voldemort try to spare Lily?

In the flashbacks of the Potters' deaths, Voldemort tells Lily to step aside so he can kill Harry.
 Since Lily is a muggle-born witch, Voldemort would normally not think she was worth anything, so I'm surprised he didn't just kill her right away!

Why do you think that is? Did Lily have any information/skills Voldemort wanted from her?

Or perhaps Voldemort (or the Tom Riddle inside) identified Lily with his own mother who dies when he was young, so he was just subconsciously trying to spare her?  You know, since he was marking Harry as an equal....
Okay, I know that was pretty far-fetched, I just felt like coming up with a few ideas)

So why not kill the spare right away? Why did he try to save her?

:ponder:  Maybe he wanted to use a memory charm on her and interrogate her after he killed Harry?  As to why he would want to do that, I have no idea.

I thought at first that this was a "needed mistake" because in order for Harry not to be killed, she had to try to protect him, to give her life for his. You see, the spell did take a life, a sacrificed one, in stead of Harry because it seems that LV didn't want to kill her. He killed her because she was protecting him.

Now I don't know anymore. She could have had special talents that he could use-she was good with Charms, and at that time he wasn't sure what would he have to do to acchieve immortality. In his speech in GOF he said: You knew how took various steps to insure immortality, and that curse didn't kill me although it should have. To me this suggests that he was surprized that he didn't die. That meens that maybe he was still trying to reach immortality, although he kind of succeded, and he may have thought she could somehow help him.

This seems to be a realistic reason. Maybe there was a rest of humanity in him at this time - his own suffering from having lost his mother, or the convention that a gentleman does not attack a lady. We do not know. IMO it is also possible that Lily is related to an old and famous wizard family, and therefore Voldemort had some respect.

Yea my opinion would be so the story could have coem about if she had moved as he asked Harry would be dead and that would be the end of the story. There would be no link between LV and Harry so (especially in book 4) he could not predict or feel LV coming to power if somehow he did survive. His mum would be alive if she moved I should imagine. So his mum had to die for the story to come about. He also wouldn't have needed to kill harry as much as he wanted to so Harry would not have as much interaction with LV's story as he needed as Voldemort wanted revenge. It would be a basically worse story so for the sake of this they had him survive from this and go live with the Dursely's it makes it more interesting.

I have often wondered the same thing. It seems so out of character. Originally I believed that since he was after Harry, he would have spared both parents had they turnde over their son...spared them at least until he had killed Harry, then who knows. But James challenges Voldemort so that must be taken care of first. Then Lily refuses to "stand aside" so he must also kill her first. Technically both parents died to save him, but Lily did it in a more concrete fashion.

Maybe we'l learn more about this mystery in the coming book....  :headdesk:

I think that he did it because he just wanted Harry dead presently, and would have killed her afterward anyway. Maybe he thought it would be worse for her if she had to see her child die?

This is one of the things that ties in with my theory that Voldemort IS somehow Harry, and that Lilly is, in fact, his mother..
But like I've said elsewhere, I'm having trouble getting from point B to point A..
