To Lucy Barfield

My Dear Lucy,

I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be
your affectionate Godfather,
C.S. Lewis

This dedication is written at the beginning of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I wholeheartedly agree with the author, fairy tales are not just for children. What do you love about these books? What is it about them that appeals to adults, as well as children? What influences an adult to renew an interest in 'fairy tales'?

I never ever lost my love of fairy tales and fantasy books. However, I do agree that you get something different out of them at different times of your life. When you are little, you secretly hope that one day it might be you who meets the fairy or gets swept up in a grand adventure. When you are an adult, you do - in the books. By then you know you will never learn to fly or cast a spell or save the day except in your head - so the magic of the written word becomes all the more important. Here we can cast aside our bad day at work or our disagreement with our families or our worries over our children and be whoever and wherever we want. Without jeopardising the mortgage!
I read the same books for pleasure that I read to my children and I hope I will never stop reading "children's" books - I don't want to grow up!
