Remember those seven tasks in the first book, which just might be analogous to the seven books? When Harry, Hermione and Ron passed the trapdoor, they found themselves having to escape Devil's Snare. Quidditch abilities helped the trio to pass a bunch of flying keys so that they could traverse a huge chess set, where Ron was knocked out. That was the fourth task, which does indeed match GOF. The next task Harry and Hermione had to do, was passing a foul-smelling, sleeping troll.......

After his escape from the Little Hangleton churchyard, clutching Cedric's body, Harry was sure that everyone would take seriously his warning that Voldemort had arisen. But if there were moments in GOF where 'Potter stinks', Harry's whole year in OotP was 'on the nose', whilst he struggled to avoid getting a T for Troll in his end of year 'OWLs', was banned for brawling in Quidditch and had horrible experiences due to Professor Umbridge's Detention Pen.

In this long running tale, what moments did you find fascinating and enjoyable? And which moments could you have done without? What about the new characters met in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Did you like them? Or were there some who were so hateful they stick in your mind forever?

Please feel welcome to tell us what you think. Which characters did you like to hate, and why? And what moments were your favourites or your least favourite?

I voted for quite a few favourite moments. OOTP was a very rich book in terms of striking scenes and interesting new characters. We saw some old characters in a new light too and that made for some interesting scenes as well.

I loved the scene where the Order came to take Harry away from Privet Drive. Mostly because I was dying to see Remus again and the thrill it gave me to hear his voice wub.gif was not any less than the thrill Harry felt. And who can forget Tonks asking Mad-eye who he knew lost a buttock ? That line makes me laugh uncontrollably every time I read it. biggrin.gif

Then there's the scene where Dumbledore takes on Fudge and Co. That's totally insane ! Phinneas Nigellus's comment to Fudge is the icing on the cake.

The DA meetings were another enjoyable part. Fred and George hexing Zacharias Smith and hastily apologising to Harry is so funny. lol.gif

I really loved the scene at the Ministry too, right after the 6 teensgers get surrounded by the DEs. The scene ends in a tragedy that makes me bawl everytime, but I love the way it's written. cry.gif

As for characters, I love tonks, Luna, the real Moody, the rest of the Order with the exception of Dung.
Umbridge is one person I dislike to the point of wanting to feed her to a blast ended skrewt. Ugly old censor.gif toad !

For some reason the poll on this thread mentions Umbridge twice. Is she twice as likeable or twice as dislikeable? Is she the character we love to hate or is she the character that we hate to love?

Other than that my favourite moments were the beginning where Petunia spills the beans, Christmas at Grimmauld place plus Fred and George's grand exit. I also liked the teacher inspections, that is to say, Professor McGonagall's and Severus Snape's. The others weren't so good.

I'm a bit confused by how the second poll is set up. Why are characters we like and characters we dislike voted on in one poll where there's nothing to clearly divide them? It's hard to tell how people feel about characters this way. Characters like Umbridge or Fudge, I don't think I've ever encountered anyone actually liking them. Likewise, I've yet to see any Neville-bashing. However, there's at least half a dozen characters on there who are attacked with great intensity by some fans and defended with equal intensity by others. How are we to know which the poll voters intend?

Order of the Phoenix has (and always will be) my favorite book in the entire series.
It was an opportunity for me to learn a heck of a lot about all the existing characters, as well as get to know some new ones. My favorite new character was definitely Luna Lovegood, I can read any passage with her involved and start to crack up! Grawp was also another funny character, and also proved himself quite useful in saving Harry and Hermione from the centaurs.
As far as favorite moments go, I love when the D.A. first "meet" in the Hog's Head. That's a fun scene, especially with Fred and George poking fun at Zacharias Smith!

Well, considering the poll says "liked" and "disliked", I can't exactly just vote to get my point across, can I? So, here we go:

Liked:
-Luna Lovegood: Every story needs some kind of loon to add some comic relief, and here it is - the loony who believes in everything from Crumple-Horned Snorkacks to Nargles. She was certainly a memorable character, no doubt, but to be honest I don't think Ravenclaw is a very good House for her. She has her clever moments, yes, but I think that House needs a better representative than a nutcase or the first girl that Harry has a crush on (Cho)....

-Neville Longbottom: This is the book where Neville finally steps up to the plate and helps Harry in his quest, growing more confident in his spellwork during D.A. meetings and sticking with Harry to the bitter end in the "Battle in the Department of Mysteries". Sometimes I wonder whether Neville would be a better protagonist for the series, seeing as how he was the other possibility in the prophecy, and he seems to grow more than Harry. (Granted, the titles for the books would be a riot - Neville Longbottom and the Philosopher's Stone. Absolutely epic....)

-Ginny Weasley: Yet another seemingly insignificant character who shows how powerful she really is. She seems to be the Weasley who is most worthy of being a Gryffindor - confident, loyal, and she finally gives Malfoy what he deserves - a Bat-Bogey Hex! Such a shame that Harry underestimates her....

Hated:
-Percy Weasley: I think this explains itself. He actually has the nerve to try to drive Ron away from Harry, and he looks up to Miss Toadface! Indeed, a git if I ever saw one.

-Cornelius Fudge: This guy pretty much screams "Idiot!" He won't listen to the truth because he believes that ignorance is bliss. Indeed, "Idiot!"

-Dolores Umbridge: .....................No comment.

-Professor Umbridge: As if having her little speech at the hearing wasn't enough to signal that she's the bad guy, her service as professor shows us the dangers of an ignorant government. Ugh...........

-Grawp: So he saves Harry and Hermione from centaurs. Big deal. They could've found some way to get out of that fix with Hermione's brains and Harry's skill with practical spellwork. I didn't really like the whole story about Hagrid's voyage to the giants' home anyway. (That said, I guess Grawp is the exception in the "Hate" list, seeing as how the characters above are ones that I love to hate. Grawp, not so much. I just hate him. He, unlike the characters above, is pretty unnecessary to the story.

But my favorite moment in the book? That's easy. It goes something like this:

Hermione: "Weren't you listening to Umbridge's speech?"
Harry: "Sounded like a load of waffle to me."
Hermione: "Yeah, well there some meaning hidden in that waffle."

Words cannot describe how necessary this scene was to the story.

My favorite moment was the bit at the beginning where Petunia is sent a Howler. That really sets the whole story off. Isn't it a pity it wasn't in the film!

I didn't like Percy or Marietta Edgecombe much. Or Cho Chang either. Luna is the most likeable person in the story, as is Neville Longbottom.

And I liked Fred and George's fireworks etc when they left Hogwarts, plus all thoe teacher interviews. Prof McG was good to read about, especially when she starts yelling at Toadface. Is that scene in the film?
