By Jove, I do believe you are right Josh. If you find the quote in OotP please post it. That would at least definitively rule out Slytherin.

and further more there is a mention I believe, in ootp about fineas black being the last slytherin headmaster I think you might be remembering incorrectly here, Josh. (And I shall gladly iron my fingers if you can provide a canon quote to prove me wrong. (Friendly Grin)) I don't think that was mentioned in OoP. Now, in Chapter Six, when Harry and Sirius are looking at the Black Family Tree tapestry, Sirius says to Potter (p.105, Raincoast): "There's Phineas Nigellus ... my great-great-grandfather, see? ... least popular Headmaster Hogwarts ever had ...". Could it be that quote you were thinking of? Regardless, it is my personal belief that when Jo had Hermoine say in PS that she had heard Dumbledore had been in Gryffindor House, Jo was using Hermoine to tell her readers that Dumbledore had been a Gryffindor. I also feel, however, that DD - more than anyone else - has been given qualities of all the houses by the author. And that she did that deliberately. Within him is the uniting of all Hogwarts houses. Just my opinion. (smile) Laura re Dumbledore: "He is my character and as my character, I have the right to know what I know about him and say what I say about him. Darn! I thought Josh might be onto something for a moment Laura.
I quite agree that Dumbledore, of all the characters, had traits from all the the houses at Hogwarts. And also I agree that Hermione was a stand in for the author to impart certain info to us -------------------- "It is like a finger pointing at the moon. don't pay attention to the finger or you will miss all that Heavenly Glory" -- Bruce Lee

Darn! I thought Josh might be onto something for a moment Laura. There is a quote. You are just in the wrong book. This is from the Godric's Hollow chapter of Deathly Hallows:QUOTE He venerated Snape, the first Slytherin headmaster since he himself had controlled the school, and they had to be careful not to criticize or ask impertinent questions about Snape, or Phineas Nigellus would instantly leave his painting. So we do have definite proof that Dumbledore was not in Slytherin. And I agree with Laura - Jo, according to herself, uses Dumbledore and Hermione to give the reader information. When Hermione said she had heard Dumbledore was in Gryffindor, that can be assumed to be factual. Especially since it wasn't contradicted later.
