Without a doubt the two most-anticipated "new" characters (at least as far as the films are concerned) for the upcoming film of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince are Narcissa Malfoy and Horace Slughorn. In the book, Professor Slughorn is described thus:
QUOTE
... an enourmously fat, bald old man ... [with] his prominent eyes, his enormous, silver walrus-like moustache. ... The top of his head barely reached Dumbledore's chin.

Acclaimed British character actor Jim Broadbent has been cast in this pivotal role as Slughorn. Obviously, and for various reasons, some changes have been made in the character's physical appearance.

Of course, the key elements of the character will be seen in Broadbent's performance. But, so far, how do you feel he measures up to YOUR interpretation of the jovial Potions Master? Is Jim Broadbent YOUR Professor Slughorn?

I'm sure he'll do a very fine job, but visually- it's definitely not what i was expecting.
I imagined him as in the second pic here, but bald with a moustache, short and very rotund (aka canon).
It won't bother me too much and I'm sure the acting will more than make up for the appearance.

Wow! He is completely different as to what I was expecting!
But, without a doubt, he'll probably out-grow all expectations I have on him!

How exiting! The mor photos I see from the film, the more excited I get!

I said it before and I'll say it again, I don't really care if the character looks exactly like the canon character or not, as long as he/she behaves like the character JKR wrote then I can imaine that actor as that character, Slughorn is no different.
Besides, the canon description I always thought was too close to Vernon Dursley anyway.

I am fine with him not being perfectly canon. I can't imagine a better Petunia than Fiona Shaw, blond or brunette! I am really excited to see him in action as Slughorn, I love Jim Broadbent and I think he will do an excellent job portraying the character. Can't wait to see it! excited.gif

I also think he will do an amazing job as Slughorn and the way he looks doesn't bother me.

In the books I always pictured Slughorn as looking something like Bob Hoskins, who is only 5'6" (according to IMDB) and bald and, they could've thrown a mustache on him and he would've looked perfect. Just imagine the bottles behind him are potions!

But Jim Broadbent is an amazing actor and his expression in the pictures we've seen so far have been spot on! And the acting, not the look is what counts most.

I totally agree! I pictured something more like Bob Hoskins, but really I don't think the look matters too much, it's the acting that is going to make or break the character. I don't think the Slughorn character is really dependent on how he looks to make the character right. I mean, if it were some character like Lockhart and he looked terrible, well that would kind of ruin the character since his character is about being a pretty face, but not having much else than that. But Slughorn is an old professor coming out of retirement, and if he does or does not have a giant mustache, or is or is not short and round, well that doesn't bug me much because I don't think it'll effect the character really. Broadbent is a great actor, so I'm sure it'll be great!!

I didnt vote in the poll because I couldnt choose lol. If we'd had a trailer rolleyes.gif considering the fact it's almost August & the movie is released in November, we'd have more idea of how Jim Broadbent fills the role of Sluggy. I have to say when I first heard the news I was very disappointed but, from all the pics we've seen I think he'll be a non-canon Sluggy. I love the pics with his huge sleeves, they're just the coolest things & somehow very Sluggy.
He is not how I pictured Slughorn but that doesnt mean he cant be Sluggy. I wonder if they'll do the scene at the house where he transfigures into a chair lol? That's an awesome scene, they have to keep it (& DDs knitting patterns, too)

I'm 1 of the 99.99% W.L.Y.J.

I'm hoping it will turn out well for the rol eof Slughorn, I expect it to be a lot differet with a new character, perhaps he can bring something new to CoC with his acting. Slughorns part in HBP is rather iteresting so I rather look forward to it in the films.
