So, you think you know your Austen characters? Take this quiz and see if you can identify the speaker of the quote. Click and drag on the black bars to reveal the answer.

1) "I do not attempt to deny that I think very highly of him-that I greatly esteem, that I like him."
2) "Perhaps, Miss Marianne, you think young men never stand upon engagements, if they have no mind to keep them, little as well as great."
3) "Oh! dear, yes; I know him extremely well-not that I ever spoke to him indeed; but I have seen him for ever in town."
4) "La! Miss Dashwood, do you think people make love when anybody else is by? Oh for shame! To be sure you must know better than that. No, no; they were shut up in the drawing room together, and all I heard was only by listening at the door."
5) "What have wealth or grandeur to do with happiness?"
6) "I made sure of its being nothing but a common love letter, and you know young people like to be laughed at about them."
7) "Perhaps just at present he may be undecided; the smallness of your fortune may make him hang back; his friends may all advise him against it. But some of those little attentions and encouragements which ladies can so easily give, will fix him, in spite of himself."
8) "Tell me that not only your house will remain the same, but that I shall ever find you and yours as unchanged as your dwelling..."
9) "Shyness is only the effect of a sense of inferiority in some way or other."
10) "Like him! I can feel no sentiment of approbation inferior to love."

1) Elinor
2) Lucy Steele
3) Charlotte Palmer
4) Miss Steele
5) Marianne
6) Mrs. Jennings
7) John Dashwood
8) John Willoughby
9) Edward Ferrars

You'd think I'd have done better than that, having read the book recently. But as it happened I did 7 out of 10 and am now most heartily ashamed of myself. I think I'd better go and start reading the book again.

7 out of 10 for me. I'm quite happy with that, seeing as I (still) haven't been able to get around to reading the book at the moment! I must have a long memory. tongue.gif
