Can I ask a technical question? Is there a preferred format for video submissions? I have on occasions captured UK TV programmes (via a digital dvb-t usb stick) which produces huge files and thus require a certain amount for conversion before they are small enough to upload. So are there any preferred formats, sizes, bitrates/quality etc. for submission (the broadcast resolution varies but BBC ONE is broadcast at a resolution of 720x576 for display at an aspect ratio of 16:9).
Excellent question! If I had my way, everyone would have a super fast Internet connection and we could take those huge files since they convert the cleanest. Since that's not a reality, we've managed to set up a system that can take just about any video format in and create the formats we need.
Even though we can take any digital format in, some compress better than others while maintaining a nice picture. Quicktime (MOV) works well, as does Windows Media (WMV). I would suggest scaling the video down to 400x300 (most encoding apps will keep the 16x9 aspect ratio and give you the black bars across the top and bottom). If you opt to go with Quicktime, I suggest using the Sorenson 3 codec. It does a very nice job. If you go with Windows Media, use the Windows Media 9 codec, but MAKE SURE you encode in CBR mode, NOT VBR.
If you're still with me, the rest of the settings should be the same no matter if you go with MOV or WMV.
Resolution: 400 x 300
Video bitrate: 800 kbps
Frames per second: 15
Audio Sampling rate: 44khz
Audio Bitrate: 32kbps
Mono is fine, but if it's a fairly short clip you can go stereo. It doesn't make a huge difference.
That may still generate a large file, especially if you've got several minutes worth of video like in an interview, but the file will be much smaller than your source. I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
