Believe it or not, there are students in the film other than the trio - and many of them come remarkably close to their canon counterparts - or do they? What do you think? Are Luna's radish earrings spot on or do her pink hightops just look a tad hokey? What about Neville's "dashing" new ha** - is it oh-so-Neville or oh-so-what-was-their-hairdresser-thinking? The Slytherin Trio: yes, I know Tom Felton's good looking, but is he close to canon? Do you miss the gallon of gel they used to pour on his hair?

Luna is described in OotP to have a, "dreamy look, often seems to have turned up wherever she is completely by accident," as well as, "protuberant silvery grey eyes with very faint eyebrows that give her a permanently surprised look," and dirty blonde, waist-long hair. Here is Evanna Lynch, who has been cast as Luna for OotP. Does she hit the mark?
IPB Image

And now, we have the twins. They are described as being freckly, and as having flaming red hair, and a shorter, stockier frame like their brother Charlie. You know them; you love them; and you'd give Umbridge hell any day for this pair of mischief-makers - do their movie counterparts look close to canon?
IPB Image

Last, but *definitely* not least is our charming Neville with his new 'do. In the books, he is described as a "round faced boy," slightly chubby and short with brown hair. Is Matthew Lewis close to canon?
IPB Image

Please keep in mind that this thread is *only* for the discussion of the actors' resemblance to their canon character, not their acting performances. If you fancy a chat about the acting of some of these actors, feel free to hop on over to our friends at Argent Scrim's; they have a great thread here about Evanna Lynch, one here about Bonnie Wright, as well as a few others! Happy Posting. smile.gif
MaraudingDon
At this moment in time, I have to say Luna thumbup.gif . I think everything about Evanna Lynch is Luna Lovegood - the eyes, hair, even the clothes and jewellery, she is perfect.

As much as I enjoy watching Oliver and James Phelps as Fred and George, it has taken a very long time for me to see them in my head when I read the books, and even now my mind wanders to a Fred and George who are more canon like. Shorter, stockier as the description states.

I think we also need to see some gratuitous Sean Biggerstaff images in this poll!! He may not match the description of Oliver Wood from the book, but he is rather lovely wink.gif !!
Lady M.
I won't vote, I can't decide between Luna, Neville and Draco, all of them look exactly like I had imagined them when reading the books
Hermi80
I really think the twins hit the Canon right on. Luna, I haven't seen in FULL movie form yet and Longbottom came in a very close second.
Everyone is very close to perfect , for me, but the twins are spot on!
biggrin.gif
MysteryloverAnne
I had to vote for the twins, I think they matched canon to a T - although Draco and early Neville came close. I would have liked to have said Luna, but until I see her in OOTP, I don't have enough info to go on.
Sofie
I voted for Ginny because Bonnie is very close to "my Ginny" smile.gif

I agree with, MaraudingDon, i think Evanna is perfect for Luna but since we havent seen much of her yet, i went with Ginny.
silk&velvet
I vote for Neville, but I also think Tom Felton is more than perfect for Draco. They were the two personn who really look like close to what I used to imagine for their characters!
canarycream
I voted for Cedric because he came closest to how I imagined when I was reading the book. I do have to say, though, that although when I first saw Ivanna Lynch I didn't really think she was right, the movie stills look very promising. However, I don't want to make a real judgement until I see her in action. Come on July!
Gryffinclaw
Neville is closest to canon for me but his new hair isn't quite right.
melj1213
So far I think Evanna is closest to canon, but until I actually see her in OoTP and actually see her interact with the other characters, I am reserving judgement. Until then I think the twins are closest to canon
~Mrs.Brisby~
I had to vote for Neville. thumbup.gif While it took me a while to get used to his new 'do, he's still the face I envision when I'm reading the books... and the ha** is kinda growing on me. (no pun intended eyebrow.gif)

Even though I voted for Neville, I have to mention Tom Felton as Draco. They couldn't have found a more perfect match. Too bad you can't vote twice in these polls! tongue.gif

I'm suprised so many have voted for the twins... Even though I think James and Oliver Phelps are great they don't really match the canon descriptions of Fred and George. They're so tall and thin and Fred and George are described as being short and stocky...
Lomelindi
I voted Evanna, simply because she's the only one, so far who struck me as "woah it IS her!" I do think Draco's pretty good, and Neville's quite good. The Weasly twins don't really match canon in my mind, so I couldn't vote for them. Although I do like their movie selves, I think there are others who match canon more. Of course, the OotP movie will ultimately seal that decision for me one way or the other, but for now I like Evanna as Luna the most.

That was my reaction as well! Isn't it funny that we all had pictures of the characters in our minds before we saw the movies, and for the most part, the actors' images match canon. There are minor variations, but for the most part, the choices have been spot on.

I had to vote for sweet little Evanna, but I also love the Phelps twins and Matt Lewis!
elizabeth18
Well, I can't decide. I'm horrible at deciding these things - I do think Evanna is absolutely dead on as Luna, certainly. But at the same time, I really think that Tom Felton is *perfect* as Malfoy - with or without the twelve gallons of gel. Check it out:
IPB Image

However, I do agree with melj123 who said...
QUOTE

I'm with you - Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory is awesome. He just looks absolutely perfect! He's virile athlete, the super good looking jock that's nice to everyone and is as seemingly perfect as a character in Jo's book can get - which is why he dies, o'course. But just take a look at this...
IPB Image

*swoon*

Sorry, I just can't help it. ;)
Shalanarah
i voted Fred& George.
I'd voted Seamus too if i could because i like his acting in the film, but i don't know about his appearance. I think his acting is quite canon.
About Luna, i'm not sure because i gotta see her acting as Luna first but i think her look is perfect.
beebz
Luna was well cast but i have not seen her in action just photos, thus i will choose neville. From the moment i saw him him the first movie i recognized him as Longbottom. He got taller and slimmer, progressing with his character (getting stronger).

Severus Snape (my god Alan rickman is amazing in every movie) was the best role cast in my opinion. and excellent make up. the greasy hair! ahhh so well done. the acting quality speaks for itself. (exploded how much i loved alan rickman) biggrin.gif

i think that hands down the three students i would choose would be in order:
Draco Malfoy(tom felton =D perhaps chosen with bias wink.gif )
Neville Longbottom (mathew lewis)
Oliver Wood (Sean Biggerstaff... i will never forget his name)

and those just happen to be top characters on my list. =D
oh
i know im mentioning staff but they got a wonderful Filtch!!!!! thumbup.gif David Bradely?
Pleshette
This poll is a toughie. There are quite a few actors who seem to have the right look and act close to canon. It's hard to pick just one. I've loved Bonnie Wright as Ginny from the beginning. I only wish the screenwriter/director would have given her more to work with. I'm hoping she'll have her moment to shine in OotP. Tom Felton looks the part of Draco but at times his acting seems a little over the top for me. I love Matthew Lewis as Neville and as Elizabeth mentioned, Robert Pattison was the perfect Cedric. As MaraudingDon said Luna's look is great and from what we've read about her, I'm really looking forward to seeing her portray Luna.

I haven't voted yet as I'm still trying to decide. And yes, I agree...we need to see some pics of Oliver Wood...*ahem*...strictly to help in deciding...for the sake of the poll... wink.gif

This is purely for the sake of getting Pleshette to vote, and not gratuitously drool-worthy at all!!

Better just quickly add that I love Cho Chang as well. I think Katie Leung looks wonderful in the part.
ErinRae
To whoever mentioned Seamus as being close to canon I agree 100% Devon Murray actually has always looked and sounded exactly as I imagined Seamus. The freckles and the smile are just perfect. He has that little bit of wit and slightly naughty spark that Seamus has. I always felt that Tom Felton was very close as well, something to do with the pointed face. I do prefer him with a wig rather than a colour job as I could always see the yellow from the bleach blush.gif

As for Sean Biggerstaff, I think I may need some more images to really confirm how close to canon he is. wub.gif

I quite agree with ErinRae--Devon's Seamus is spot-on. But they are ALL so good, I still can't decide!

Here's adorable Seamus:

The Sportz Freak
I say draco Malfoy

Fred and george dont match because in the book, they were described differently
elizabeth18
I am having a terrible time deciding with this one - they all seem quite close to canon, though it surprises me quite a bit that Fred and George are doing so well (tied with Luna in first place) because, as MaraudingDon noted, Fred and George are described as short and stocky - not at all the tall, suave characters played by James and Oliver Phelps.

I also love Seamus Finnigan - he has that slightly mischievous air about him, a perfect smattering of freckles, etc.

I am going to take forever deciding on this one.
MaraudingDon
Isn't Seamus another one who is blond in the book, yet dark haired in the film?

Tom Felton as Draco is perfect.

elizabeth18
MaraudingDon is, surprisingly wink.gif , absolutely correct. Seamus is described as a sandy haired in the books, whereas in the movie, he is obviously brown haired. Odd how I felt he looked perfect, though obviously his hair color is the exact opposite of canon.
rupertgrintequalslove
Tom is perfect as Draco when it comes to looks, but I think the two (don't remember their names) who play Fred and George really capture what they are like in the books. I am not trying to discuss acting ability, it's just when I see them on screen their personalities just fit so well. Neville, Oliver, and Cho are pretty well played on screen too.
Pleshette
I finally voted for Cedric Diggory. No, not because he's another good-looking guy (although a pic of Robert Pattison may support my reasoning...just saying). Everything about Robert Pattison, his looks and and his acting were perfect. He portrayed Cedric's likeability, competiveness, and courage perfectly imo. And I think Ginny's and Hermione's giggling when they first meet Cedric at the beginning say enough about his handsome features.

This was such a hard decision as there are so many characters who are very close to canon. However, in a lot of the choices, some things are spot on while something else is not quite canon. I love Neville, and Matthew Lewis has portrayed Neville's personality brilliantly, though he's not really how I pictured him. Like I mentioned before, the look of the character doesn't bother me, I just want to see their character's personality shine through.

ETA: I just looked down at the floor and noticed that Elizabeth had fainted due to the Cedric pic she posted on p.2. *fans Elizabeth* I suppose we don't really need another pic. The Gallery girls are busy enough without having to revive swooning fans. wink.gif
voldemort must die
I voted Evanna clap.gif . She's not exactly what I pictured, although none of them are really, but she's the closest yet for me. However, I agree with everyone who says Tom Felton is a great Draco, but I think Evanna just about beat him. I also love Matt Lewis- he's definitely got Neville's personality down, but he isn't what I pictured Neville to be, just like in the case of the Phelps twins (who are from my town woohoo! thumbup.gif still haven't spotted them though... biggrin.gif )
LunasLion
I voted Luna/Evanna as well-- I felt she was perfect from the first time I saw a picture of her. A lot of other people I think I picture as the movie character when I think of them, but if I actually read the books, I'll picture someone else. For example, Neville... I find it hard to not picture Matt Lewis if I just think of "Neville" but if I think of what I would actually imagine Neville to look like, it's a bit different from how Matt has matured to look like.
I've noticed the Seamus discrepancy before, and I do kind of picture him with more sandy hair... though I still think *actor who plays Seamus* does a very good representation.
As for the twins... I don't think they look much like their book counterparts. I mainly feel their hair just isn't RED enough. (I guess that comes from them not being redheads tongue.gif)
JaneMarple9
I went for Neville. He is just how I pictured him!! thumbup.gif
nimbus xl
I reckon to look at. Dean is probably one of the most canon characters, howeve for acting it has to be Neville
Hagiographer13
At the moment I'm leaning towards Cho Chang as being closest to Jo's description . . . I need to see more pictures to help make up my mind! biggrin.gif
elizabeth18
It's time this thread was injected with some pictures of *gasp* girls!

First up, we have Harry's first "love," - Cho Chang! She's not described in the books too much - it only says that is she is "very pretty" with "long black hair," and about a head shorter than Harry.
IPB Image

A couple people have also mentioned that they feel Ginny Weasley, played by Bonnie Wright, is also quite close to canon. In the books, Ginny has brown eyes, "flaming red hair," and has a shorter build, like the twins. Because I couldn't decide which one to put here, here are *two* Ginny pics.

I voted for Draco. His is such an important character. Probably the most central to the story of all the kids outside the trio.
harrmione55
ponder.gif WHEWW! ! ! This is really hard, took me a while before I casted my vote (peek on pictures first), and voted, finally for Cho Chang. Although, Draco is also close to canon and Cabbe and Goyle, Neville and Seamus. Not mentioned is Hagrid, which IMO is also close. Luna is also close, but, I still want to see more of her. wink.gif
Firiel
Oddly enough I rather supported the actress who plays Susan Bones. She doesn't get much of a look-in but she has that round wondering face, a slightly one-step-behind expression that makes her a perfect Hufflepuff. (Sorry Hufflepuffs!) I'm thinking mainly of how she was in first year, being sorted and so on.

Katie Leung made her character so pretty that I was much better able to understand how Harry fell for her. Then when she spoke in that gorgeous Scots accent I was thrilled! She's going to have to pull a trick out of the bag to make us not feel too sorry for her when things go wrong next movie. (Off topic, sorry - appearances are under scrutiny here; but it's difficult to look at just that little aspect of the character, eh?)
Madsdagirl
Oooooooh yay- great thread!!!

I voted for Luna because Evanna is absolutely perfect to me. I also thought Crabbe, Goyle, Wood, and Seamus were very close to canon.

Evanna is a perfect Luna to me because she just has that dreamy quality. It doesn't seem like she is putting it on and from what cast members have said about her she really is like Luna. Even though I always imagined Luna to have darker hair Evanna is pretty much Luna personified.
Aquamarine
This was a close call between Luna and Ginny, but I went with Ginny because we haven't seen Luna in the actual movies yet. Maybe my vote will change once OotP comes out...
qtpatutie432
I voted Neville.

When I read about the prophecy and realized Neville could be that one to destroy Voldemort, it shocked me. I think Neville will rise up in DH and play a huge part in defeating LV; I still think Harry will ultimately defeat him, but that Neville will be helping more than any other non-trio Hogwarts student.
Val_Halla
I thought it might be helpful to post the description for each character alongside their pictures.

IPB Image

Luna - Hair: dirty blonde, waist-length and straggly.
Eyes: protuberant silvery grey eyes with very faint eyebrows that give her a permanently surprised look, particularly since she doesn't seem to blink as much as a 'normal' person.
Distinguishing features: dreamy look, often seems to have turned up wherever she is completely by accident .

Fred & George - Eyes: unknown.
Hair color: Flaming red.
Other characteristics: Freckles. Body type similar to their shorter, stockier brother Charlie

Neville - Eye color: Unknown.
Hair color: Unknown.
From the books: "A round-faced boy" (PS6).
From the website: Rowling's own drawing of the five Gryffindor students ("Chapter 7, Draco's Duel") shows Neville as the shortest and chubbiest of the group. His hair appears to be a light brown and he wears PJs with teddy bears on them.

Dean - A "half-blood" Black boy, even taller than Ron

Source for all descriptions: The Lexicon
Madsdagirl
Wow Val_Halla! Thank you so much for giving us the canon descriptions! I didn't know that no reference in canon is made to Neville's hair and eyes!

I think the movie portrayal of Dean is pretty fantastic. He looks exactly as he is described in canon by Jo.

It is also interesting to note how tall the Phelps twins are when they are meant to be short and stocky ponder.gif

Val_Halla
IPB Image

Seamus, Goyle, Draco, Crabbe, Ginny, Colin, Cho

Seamus - Irish boy with sandy hair

Goyle - Hair: short, bristly, extends down onto his forehead.
Eyes: small, dull, deep-set.
Voice: low and raspy (CS12).
Distinguishing features: thickset and extremely mean, "almost as stupid as he [is] mean"
- Goyle has short, bristly hair and long, gorilla-ish arms.

Draco - Eye color: Gray and cold (like Lucius').
Hair color: Pale, white blond.
Distinguishing features: Pale pointed face

Crabbe - Hair: pudding-bowl haircut.
Voice: deep grunt.
Distinguishing features: thickset and extremely mean (PS6). Flat nose. Holds his arms sort of stiffly

Ginny - Eye color: bright brown (CS3).
Hair color: Vivid, flaming red, worn as a long mane (OP4, very apt for a lion-hearted Gryffindor).
Build: the short Weasley variation (like the twins rather than Ron).
Distinguishing features: when her jaw is set, her facial resemblance to Fred and George is striking

Colin - Colin Creevey is a very excitable, rather short boy with mousy brown hair

Cho - Extremely pretty with long black hair, about a head shorter than Harry during his third year, and very popular.

Source for all descriptions: The Lexicon
BrettMac
Well, there's obviously no contest that Evanna is the most resemblant of her character, but I also think Bonnie does an incredible Ginny. smile.gif

*I think we need an honourable mention for John though. He does a fairly good Luna as well. tongue.gif

IPB Image

Wood, Percy, Cedric, Parvati, Padma

Oliver Wood - "Burly" (PS11)

Cedric - Cedric Diggory was an extremely handsome boy with gray eyes. He is quite tall and the quiet type (PA)

Percy - Grown son of Arthur and Molly, third of their seven children, who like all of them has red hair. Percy is the tall and thin variety of Weasley, like his brothers Bill and Ron, as opposed to the shorter and stockier build of Charlie, Fred, and George. Alone of the Weasley siblings, Percy wears horn-rimmed spectacles (GF5).

Parvati/Padma Patil - Parvati has long dark hair which she wears in a plait. Harry by his fourth year thought her very pretty, while Dean Thomas considered her and her twin to be the best-looking girls in their year

Source of all descriptions: The Lexicon

ETA: After reviewing the choices, I had to go with Draco. He has consistently matched the description from the books. Appearance-wise, Neville was very canon at first, but has gotten rather tall and thin. (I have to say I love Matt Lewis as Neville, however.)

As fond as I am of Chris Rankin, the person who portrays Percy in the movie, I do have to say that his description really isn't faithful to the canon. It seems that the casting people couldn't find stocky red haired males!

I love Tom Felton's Malfoy. Aside from the fact that he is very good looking tongue.gif he really does fit the canon description of Mr. Malfoy. Isn't it a pity you can only vote once!

Robert is a perfect Cedric! He certainly is handsome!
hpboy13
Well, I voted on Oliver Wood, simply because I could find no qualms with him (probably due to his extremely short aount of screen time). However, I do think Luna and Ginny and Cedric do a pretty remarkable job. Draco also was perfect in the first two movies, but he needs his gel back!!! Now it's "HP meets Aaron Carter".

LOL at the Aaron Carter comment!! I have to disagree about the hair gel, though. That was one thing I was glad to see go. smile.gif

I think the kid who played Colin Creevey in Chamber of Secrets was also a perfect match. I love how they had him with his camera at all times. biggrin.gif It's a shame he's hasn't been in any more of the movies.
elizabeth18
I love Colin Creevey (played by Hugh Mitchell, FYI)! He has the perfect hair, face - everything! I just love this look of pure happiness he has whenever he sees Harry/Harry pays attention to him. Hopefully at some point he'll rejoin the cast!
Dreamweaver
Well, if it didn't have to be a student, I would say hands down Hagrid. For students it is a toss between Draco and Oliver. I voted for Draco, probably because we have seen more of him!

i voted for cedric, cause i haven't seen luna act yet. and cedric is just suppose to be so georgous, and he is.
