Converting sketch lines to colorable lineart.

1. Select the entire layer with the sketch on it.

2. Copy (Ctrl + C).

3. Click on the Mask botton. (There are two buttons towards the bottom of the Tool Palatte that look like rectangles with circles in the middle. Click on the Right rectangle w/ a circle in the middle.)

4. Paste (Ctrl + V). This should make your drawing look red.

5. Click back on the left hand rectangle-with-a-circle-in-the-middle. Now all of the white in your drawing is selected.

6. Go to Select and click Inverse. Now all of your lineart is selected.

7. Create a new layer and fill the selection with black (one click with the bucket will do it).

8. Now you can delete the original sketch layer. Lock the transparency of your new sketch layer (click the checkered square on your Layer Palatte), and now you can color your lineart! smile.gif

Hey everyone, I am a huge fan of all the cool art work here. I would love nothing more than to be able to draw like you guys. I really want to be a better artist, but, I'm not a very patient person. does anyone have any ideas? Thanks a ton!

ginny1313: Well, to be able to draw well, you've kinda got to pratice a buttload. :/ If you want a fast way to practice drawing, though, maybe you could try doing really fast (like 30 sec-1 min) gesture drawings? Just do a whole bunch of those until you get bored with it - you'll still be improving, but just in short little spurts. As with a lot of other stuff, you'll only get out of your art what you put into it.

O HAY and I have a tutorial, too.

Title: Face Drawing Tutorial
Medium: This was done in Photoshop, but you could seriously use anything.
Notes: ehh, I need to make a new version of this, but this will work for now. It's basically like every other face tutorial out there, only I drew it instead. x)

Nice guides Makani! I especially like the first one (and it's outcome), but I'm wondering about one thing: You say you use the polygon lasso tool to select the areas you want to color, but you kinda skip over how you use it. I've tried to use it many times, and I know how to use it technically, but not artistically. I try to make a kinda rough shape of the area to color, but then theres always some places that doesn't get color, or some outside the line that does. Do you sit zoomed in at 400%, accurately "tracing" the line, or do you have another technique?

You guys mention Photo Shop a lot but does anyone have any tips or tricks for using Corel? I try to color in my stuff but it ends up looking blocky and weird. Is Corel Painter similar to PhotoShop in commands or whatever? I feel like I am fumbling around with it and just end up doing stuff with pencil and paper anyway. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

This might sound kind of corny but I find it useful to use one of those posable little wooden mannequins for arms and legs. Usually they are about a foot high and the proportions are right. As for hands you've got to practice practice practice (helpful huh?) Start by just blocking them out, lines for how long you want the fingers, then make ovals for each joint and then shape them out, add nails etc. Another thing you can do to practice is draw a line around your own hand (like you're making a Thanksgiving Turkey) and then add in the details: knuckles, fingernails, palm lines, shading and stuff like that. Then there's the ol' hand in the pocket or behind the back, technique wink.gif Seriously, hands are the hardest part of the body to draw--for example, you have to draw a whole series of perfect hands to get into medical illustration school--so don't be too hard on yourself!

I didn't create this tutorial. It was done by an artist whose work I am very fond of. However, it gave me some great pointers, hence my linking to it here. I hope it can be as helpful for others.

Title: Coloring Tutorial
Medium: Markers
Notes: A step-by-step guide by Prince Fala on how she colors her pieces with Prismacolor markers. She uses a group image of the original Gryffindor Quiddich team (Harry, Oliver, Fred, George, Katie, Angelina, Alicia) in action.

Step One
Step Two
Step Three
Step Four
Step Five
Step Six
Step Seven
Step Eight
Step Nine
Step Ten
Step Eleven
Step Twelve
Step Thirteen
Step Fourteen

I love watching how the piece is created, layer by layer, color by color. And her notes on building up a good base of shadows and accent colors first has been a huge help to me.

Hey

While the face tutorials that have been posted on this thread are great, I would like to see some more examples on different kinds of shapes and maybe from different angles. I'm still only learning how to draw, and would like to break my habit of giving all my characters pointy cheeks and chins a la manga/anime.
So if anybody could post links to tutorials or character sheets, if you know any, I would be ever so grateful.

Thinking about your post, I thought I'd try my hand (ha ha) at a tutorial. I'm no MC Escher (or Makani either!) but I do feel comfortable drawing basic hands. I did the drawing on paper and scanned it so it's not as slick as some of the ones done in PS, but I think it's OK.

Aieeeeeeeee!!!!! I'm so happy I came across this thread! I spent my down time at work surfing through your gallery on deviantArt and couldn't find a tutorial by you there. I'm known as henhenhen there.

I will definitely be putting both of these tutorials to use... So far I've only checked out makani's tuts, I'll probably do more after that. One lil cucco can only do so much!

Thank you! Any further tuts you create (PLEASE?) I'll be trying out as well. <3

Edit! Here's my results after a short amount of time in Photoshop following your face tut:

I thought i'd link to this excellent resource that Coell has compiled over on livejournal:

http://community.livejournal.com/hp_inspirado/

It's an extensive list of tutorial for loads of things, digital, tradition, specifics like fur or chainmail, faces, hair, etc, by loads of diffrent artists.

Drawing faces

Wow! It's not only helpful but entertaining. I printed it out and I fully plan on taking it to school and practicing. Maybe I can have some constructive doodles from now on. Most of the time, with my drawings, I don't know where to start or what I want the picture to look like when it's done. If people have tutorials on drawing full hp people, that would be wonderful!

Makani, I almost fell off my chair laughing when I went through your 'How to draw faces' (Harry) tutorial. It was totally insane ! I mean insane in a nice way, if you know what I mean. biggrin.gif I'm OK at landscapes but horrible at faces and I found your tips very useful. Much obliged for the tutorial and the laughs. tongue.gif

Rotae, your tutorial on drawing Teddy was fantastic ! thumbup.gif I managed quite a good Teddy myself after reading your pointers. Thanks a lot ! flowers.gif

No problem, rowena r! I'm so glad it helped you biggrin.gif

Makani just updated her favorite tutorials here at her deviantart page. Take a look through and see if there is anything helpful in there?

Any of you have favorite tutorials? I need all the help I can get!
