I'm too young to have kids - but if I think mine was beer
There are so many pictures of me as a baby - holding empty beer bottles filled with milk...

My first boy said "dada" my second said "mama" although this may be because i wouldn't let the sound dada be made infront of him, only mama... hehehe

This is a great thread!

My eldest sister's first word was "woof!" apparently she was very friendly with the family dog! Helen, the middle sister, came up with almost a full sentence: "All gone. More!"
Strangely I don't know what mine was, it can't have been nearly as amusing as either of theirs!

I can't remember what my first word was- I think it was something strange like flower???
But my daughter's first words were "this" and "that" Wherever we went she would point and say "this" or "that"? She wanted everything explained to her. Along with a name for everything.

Both of my boys said dada first if I remember correctly. But what really made my family giggle was the first sentence my older son said at about 12 or 13 months. He said, "The cow has a tail" or something to that effect. My dad thought it was so funny, he typed it out and framed it!

Modly note.
Hi everybody. I'd like to take a moment to ask you guys to try to incorporate some discussion into this topic. I know it can be a fun one and people seem to like it. However, if it winds up just being a list of first words and one sentance posts, I'll be forced to close it.
Thanks,
Coach

I think with both of mine their first words were 'dada'.
I have heard that this is one of the first sounds that they make which is nearest to actual words so we take this to be their first word. Of course it is usually Mum at home talking about when Dad is going to come home and not about what Mum is doing. So the children hear the word Dad more often than the word Mum.
To start with, our first child called us Mum and Dad. When he went to pre-school at aged 3, he suddenly started calling us Mummy and Daddy. It really threw my husband!

My little guy's first word was "no"... and he hasn't stopped talking since! Anybody else got a chatterbox?
Actually, Sam started using his words a little late. We thought at first maybe he had a hearing problem, but looking back on it now, I think he was just REALLY good with body language -- to the extent that he didn't have to talk as much. Because his speech is fine now.

My daughter's first word was "Mama". I was so proud.

"Dada" was next, followed by "Duck" (which she pronounces "GUCK")

Allegedly my first word(s) were "shut cupboard"/"cupboard shut" which used to drive my mother insane. They say that "Dada" is much easier to say than "Mama", shadow_onthesun, so Mae is quite advanced! Congrats

My first word was "Duck" (allegedly), then "Daddy", and because I couldn't say "Mummy" I said "MeMees"

According to my mom, I didn't have a first word. I had a first
phrase.
When I was young, maybe 10-18 months old, my mom said that whenever she wanted to hold me, she's said, "Hold you?" and stick out her arms. So one day I supposedly stuck out my arms to her and said, "Hold you?" because I wanted to be held. I was so cute when I was young. . .

As for my sister, she didn't start talking until she was two or three. She'd point things out she wanted, made facial expressions, etc. to communicate. But once she started school, there was no shutting her up!
*edited to add about my sister*

My first words were also "Hold you," as a matter of fact. I said "Daddy, hold you." when I wanted to be held.
But nothing takes the cake like my uncle. His favorite two words as a baby were "fox" and his name - "Jack." Jack was pronounced as "Gock" and "fox" was pronounced as "F***." Considering that my grandmother worked at a summer camp and my uncle played outside near the kids, they had a blast asking him to say his favorite word.

I think my first word was "dad" but I know my first long world was "testarossa" which is a type of Ferrari.

My parents always used to take me to a nearby pond to feed bread to the ducks, so my first word ended up being "duck" too. I was apparently obsessed with ducks in my very early years. I still have duck salt and pepper shakers and a toothpick holder my parents bought my a long time ago.

I think I was in my cot. My first word was 'dada'. Not very exciting, but sweet! I wonder what my child's will be, should I have one or more.

Well i don't have a child but my own first word was.....Dada! Fairly conventional and not particularly groundbreaking but I was a daddy's girl back in the day so I don't mind!

I have two boys. The youngest must be a visionary because his first word was "light". My oldest spoke with his stomach in mind and yelled at the top of his voice "yoghurt".
I was very ill at around 9 months and was running extreme temperatures. I was apparently singing the songs from The Sound of Music in the hospital. No wonder I hate that movie now!!!
Was anyone talking at an exceptionally early age?

According to my relatives I started talking at a fairly young age, long words and all. In fact, they were amused because short words were the ones that I had problems with.

I don't know what my first word was but I think it was either mama or dada! Something like that! I also called my blanket Keke (like key-key) and I must have said a word that sounded like grandma because she always thought I wanted her when actually I wanted my nooky. Also I liked to babble alot when I was little and so my grandpa always said that I was speaking mexican!

My sister didn't talk to much when she was little because she was sick but I know that she could never say my name so she called me Kaka (apparently in some language it means poo) but I didn't know that so I though it was so cute...no I think it is gross!
Edit: I just looked up kaka and it is somekind of bird!

My first word was "flower." Apparently, I was sitting in the garden while my parents were working and I pointed to one and said it.
Thinking about it, I had a lot of firsts in that garden - that's where my mom found my first tooth because I had tried to eat dirt and she felt it when she was getting it out of my mouth.

the first thing I have to say is that French mother tongue. My son first word was "dedans" it means inside. Every word he said started by D; dedans, dodo (for sleep), doudou (for blanket) and dada I think he said mama as his 4th word. After inside he started to ask for his pacifier saying "tuce"
