Starts July 1st!!

Welcome to the Leaky Cauldron Craft-Along for July 2008, hosted by your friendly neighborhood Leaky Crafty Witches! This craft is just the thing for a summer camp activity, crafting with kids, or just to pass the time while you sit indoors with the air conditioning. Folks on the winter side of the world can also enjoy something to do while sitting by the fire smile.gif

The project we will be crafting together is the Hogwarts House Friendship Bracelet by Quietish.

This project will run through to the end of the month. Please feel free to jump in at any point in the Craft-Along to craft this project with us!

Because it is July 1st somewhere in the world, I now declare this Craft-Along officially in progress! Please post your hellos in here, maybe tell a little about what sort of crafts you are into, and get going on your wand!

Please be sure to pop into the other threads (in this Contests & Craft-Alongs forum and linked above) and check out the video walkthrough (also linked above) if you'd like to see how it's done.

Cheers!

Hey all, I'm excited to get going on another craft-along! I hope you all have fun with this one. It's simple and fun, and doesn't take a lot of time at all.

I'm Rosemary and have been crafting since the beginning of.. well, not time, but probably since I have been able to wield scissors anyway. I just got through working up the video walkthrough and hopefully I'll have that up shortly for you.

I look forward to crafting with you all!

WOO-HOO! the craft-along has started!! excited.gif

I'm Jenn, and I can't wait to get started on this and get to know everyone. Let's get crafting!!
Josée~Madalia
Josée (pronounced Joe-Zay tongue.gif) and though I'll be recovering from an operation, I'll be sure to join on this one. As I've been making friendship bracelets ever since I was 9, I might go a little overboard on this and do something a lot more complicated, but I'll still get started on the simple stuff while still on medications. Otherwise the final result will be, shall we say, interesting... biggrin.gif
Quietish
Aw, a little medication always makes things fun! ;)

Joining in on the fun! I love making bracelets!!
Quietish
Welcome Debbie!
Overcast
I'm joining in, too! I'm making bracelets for Terminus, so I'm just going to add to the pot! Yay!
Quietish
Ooh excellent! There will be a lot of friending going on at Terminus, methinks!

Got room for a freak to play too?
Quietish
Yes! Come play!
Moose_Starr
So I'm very late to join but, I'd like to join the craft along, too.
*goes off in search of the tutorial* unsure.gif
Quietish
It is certainly not too late to join! Glad you have smile.gif

FYI-- The Video Gallery folks have been super busy so I have temporarily hosted the video walkthrough on my own so you all can see it in the meantime. It is Windows Media, so I don't know what that means for mac users, but hopefully it will be up for good soon! smile.gif
Overcast
They have Windows Media Player for Macs. They also have Flip4Mac which plays the .wmv files into Quicktime. But, the link doesn't work for me. It says it's not a movie file. sad.gif
Quietish
Yeah there was a server issue. Should be good to go now smile.gif
Overcast
Yay, video! Love the green hair.

It's so weird. I don't knot to the left. I knot to the right. I'll have to try it that way to see if there's a difference. I have a bunch of beads too so I'm going to try that as well.
Quietish
I think as long as you're consistent, it will be fine. Obviously it is.. your pics look great.
Josée~Madalia
Overcast, both knots are the same and they achieve the same result. In fact, when you make more "complicated" bracelets, you need to make both types of knots in order to make motifs like >>>>>>, XXXXX, etc. There's also a third type of knot you need to make, which is one knot from the left and one knot from the right (or vice versa).

The only thing I find when you make all sorts of knots is that you always tend to make one type of knot a little looser than the other. But in the end, you really have to stick your nose two inches from the bracelet to see the difference biggrin.gif

The Video Walkthrough is now up on Leaky and is linked properly in the original post smile.gif Enjoy!

Sorry so I'm late! We're about to head out the door on vacation, so I thought I'd drop in so I don't forget while I'm away.

I made one Ravenclaw following the tutorial and one Gryffindor using four strands and 10 stitches to each stripe. My 10 year old has been making bracelets, too. His first ever was red, white and blue because we started on the 4th of July.

Here are some photos... I promised not to show his face because he's wearing his pjs. rolleyes.gif We pinned his bracelet to a bandana so it wouldn't stretch out his pjs.

Thanks for the great, tut, quietish!

Hi Jen! I'm glad you all enjoyed them smile.gif Have a great vacay!

Quietish, that was a good video. It helped explain what knot you were using.
I was inspired to make a bracelet. I found in the UK that Woollies has a pack of 12 embroidery threads of different colours for £2.49. Bargain!
So I set about making my first bracelet, in Gryffindor colours. My children soon spotted what I was doing and wanted to join in.
I put 4 repeats in my bracelet which made it too long for a bracelet. So my daughter has claimed this as a necklace. She did a bracelet with just 2 repeats in yellow with pink as the contrasting colour. She struggled a bit with this. Mainly because when she tied the knot she was holding the single thread tight instead of the other threads. But she managed to do it with help.
My son on the other hand, made a bracelet in about half an hour. He used 3 colours, purple as the main colour, orange as the contrasting colour and then the three knots between the contrasting colour he did in green. It worked out well, but he was getting short of purple towards the end. We used 4 foot lengths of thread for this and found that the orange and green had 2 feet left over. So he is doing another one identical to give to his teacher!
I don't have a digital camera but I will try and see if I can scan them to show you.
As_Weasley_as_I_wannabe
Those sound great, Apple! thumbup.gif

I sure hope you can get them scanned - I'd love to see them!
Quietish
Thanks Apple!! It makes me happy to hear how your children enjoyed the crafting as well smile.gif

Ok everyone, just a couple of more days left in July. Is anyone still out there making bracelets? I won't be quitting with the end of the craft-along, myself. smile.gif

Yes I am still making bracelets although not progressing too well because of other stuff. But, I do intend to make more bracelets and improve on my spiraling knots so I'll still be knotting my way thru the summer biggrin.gif
