Way back when I first read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix I was curious. It seemed as though Luna and Harry were becoming close. Would it have ever worked out if they had become a couple?

I think Luna is a bit too right brained for Harry. Harry wanted/needed someone who shared his interest. Harry wasn't interested in searching for the Crumple-Horn Snorkack.
Ginny shared Harry's love of Quidditch and flying, she was a member of his favorite family.
The qualities that made Ron, Harry's best friend, Ginny also possessed.
In the books she was also said to be quite a looker, not that Harry put looks first.
He told off Romilda Vane when she insulted Neville and Luna on the train "You don't have to sit with them"
BTW. When he invited her to Slughorn Christmas party I thought he was going to hook up with her but then he started to get interested in Ginny and I thought Luna would hook up with Neville. But Neville's feet are too firmly planted on the ground for him to be with Luna. Later I thought Luna was going to hook up with Dean.

Nah, don't think that could have worked, imagine what Harry would have gone through after the final battle (or after Sirius death, since your talking about the end of OotP) there would most likely be some post traumatic stress there, as well as much grief, he'd need someone who would understand him, help him, and I think Luna is a bit too spaced out to acctually be able to be there for him the way he need it...

I don't think it could have worked out. They seem like they could be really good friends, but I don't think they could be a couple. I don't think Harry is a very open minded person and he is judgemental of people when he first meets them, and the way he thinks of people tend to stay the same until they do something to prove to him that they are different. [hope that makes sense] I think because Harry is a nice person, he hung around with Luna because he felt a bit sorry for her and thought she was a nice person, not really that he liked her all that much. And it seems to me that Harry and Luna were sometimes together but it was because Luna was just there alone and Harry was being nice and invited her to join them, or Luna [being the bold person she is] invited her self over and started talking.

Another reason they wouldn't work out is because Luna is a person that people look at because of the way she looks and acts. And even though Harry is used to people looking at him, I think after so many years of it, he got kind of sick of it. I think he wants to lead a normal life without people staring at him all the time, and I don't think that would have happened if he was with Luna

Also maybe if Ginny wasn't around, they could like each other more. During OOTP Harry liked Cho, and then after the battle at the ministry he really didn't like anyone and then it was on to Ginny...at least that is they way I see it! So I don't think she ever had a chance.

Also could it be possible that if Ginny and Luna were good friends, Ginny could have told Luna she liked Harry? Because if she told her that, then I think Luna would have respected Ginny enough to not like Harry like that. And maybe if she did like Harry, she knew that she wouldn't have a chance against Ginny, or she just knew that that would be a non-friend-ish thing to do. Luna is a good friend and wouldn't take Ginny's "man". tongue.gif

So I don't think it could have worked out.

No. I never got the feeling that Harry and Luna would or could ever be a couple. Harry isn't interested in Luna. There was always these awkward moments. Harry laughed at Luna's far out theories. Harry needed someone who enjoyed being around, holding conversations with, that person was Ginny.

What disturbed Harry about Luna in the beginning was her knack for speaking uncomfortable truths.
Ron appreciated he oddness, "She crazy, but in a good way" and even Hermione her intellectual opposite came to care for her deeply
I find it rather reveling that the 5 people Luna considered friends were Griffindors

i dont think it would have worked, because instead of being romantically attracted to each other, i think they were drawn to each other as friends. They were both scene as outcasts at that time and so i think they found sollice in each other smile.gif (as friends!)

NO! She's just plainly too cool for Harry. I don't think he would be able to stand her radiation of abnormality for long periods on end. xxx

I do find it kind of funny that JKR does a better job of illustrating Luna and Harry's warm friendship than she does Ginny and Harry's romantic attatchment in "The Deathly Hallows." Luna & Harry actually get meaningful scenes with each other, unlike Ginny, whose only big moment with Harry was the "Birthday Kiss." Luna's calm presence was there in the Malfoy Manor dungeon with Harry, Ron & Mr.Olivander...it was Luna who seemed to tap into Harry's feelings about Dobby and contributed to Dobby's eulogy...and apart from the epilogue, Harry's final "meaningful moment" with another character was with Luna, when she picked up on his weariness and his need to be alone, and encouraged him to find that time alone, away from everyone else, after his defeat of Voldemort. I think that JKR's affection for Luna grew as she wrote the last two books and as a consequence she developed both Luna's character and her special relationship with Harry...Luna's lovable wackiness was emphasized in HBP and JKR stressed her wisdom & stregnth in DH.

In contrast, the character of Ginny in DH seems to be just an object of longing, albeit a very powerfull one because she embodies Harry's hope for the future, but she's not a particularly memorable character in her own right. JKR simply writes that Harry was always thinking of her and when Ginny does make an appearance in the final battle, she's mostly observed from afar.

As for Luna's best friends being Gryffindores, I don't necessarily think that means Luna belonged in Griffindore House, maybe Luna had an intense "emotional intelligence" and that was why she was a Ravenclaw...just a thought...

I don't think it could have worked out, because I think that Harry and Luna would be better as friends. Though it seemed to me that Luna could perceive how Harry was feeling at times when others didn't, I think Harry wouldn't like Luna in that way. Though I Luna understood how Harry felt about Sirius, his parents, and other things, Ginny understood more about having Voldemort inside his mind, and it seemed that he needed someone who understood more about that, and who he could relate to about that. I dunno, it's just what I think.

On terms of them being different from everyone else I would say it might have worked. But in terms of Harry having some level of sanity there might have been a struggle in the if-to-be relationship. Luna was a tad loony in a good way. Harry didn't come off as that nor did he seem to show any interest in girls that resembled that characteristic trait.

I think Luna is simply too weird and eccentric for Harry. Harry's ideal girl (Ginny) is someone who's more down to earth.

Harry and Luna wouldn't have worked out for some of the same reasons my beloved Neville/Luna wouldn't work. (Though I still will believe they dated before marrying Hannah and Rolf, respectively!)

Harry, like Neville, needs stability. He needs to set down roots. Losing his parents so young, I think he looked forward to getting a secure job, a home, marrying and raising a family.

Luna, according to JKR's interviews, traveled the world and married later. She needed her time of freedom and she needs someone who can appreciate that and who understands her. I don't think Harry (or Neville or Ron or anyone else) ever really "got" Luna. Hopefully, Rolf does.

This is very much a matter of opinion and one on which, I don't agree.

In some ways, Harry has lots of ambition, e. g. when he reaches for the Snitch. Same goes for Ginny. Luna, on the other hand, is repeatedly described as 'vague', her voice has a 'dreamy quality' or she 'looked as though she had drifted in accidentally'. While this is good for Harry at certain points (when he's in grief), that's not enough to build a relationship on.

Of course it's my opinion...I just think that Ginny is an underwritten character, espcially in "Deathly Hallows."

No, Luna is just plainly too awesome for Harry to handle.

Harry and Luna both are very intelligent, but Harry's mind tends to travel in a straight line while Luna's soars all over the place. They would never understand each other.

I agree completly.

They can kind of relate to eachother on some levels because they both lost someone, but besides that, Luna would just freak Harry out a lot of the time with her amazing eccentric-ness.

I think Luna needs someone who is on the same level of "looniness" as her and Harry just doesn't have that. He also might get fed up with her constant talk of certain creatures. She is able to touch and reach him in such a way no one else can, but a romantic relationship is more than that.
SnapetheGood
These two would never be together, but would, at most become best friends. I think Harry liked her becasue she seemed to understand things in a way that felt similar to Harry. I mean, she explained things in a way that seemed to influence him. Her perspective tended to clear things up for him.

Me and Luna would have worked out biggrin.gif I thought Harry & Luna would hook up but as soon as that thought crossed my mind Ginny always managed to pop up and ruin it dry.gif
